The Power of Making: V&A Museum, London

"Making is the most powerful way that we solve problems, express ideas and shape our world. What and how we make defines who we are, and communicates who we want to be... Many people think that craft is a matter of executing a preconceived form or idea, something that already exists in the mind or on paper. Yet making is also an active way of thinking, something which can be carried out with no particular goal in mind. In fact, this is a situation where innovation is very likely to occur. Even when making is experimental and open-ended, it observes rules. Craft always involves parameters, imposed by materials, tools, scale and the physical body of the maker. Sometimes in making, things go wrong. An unskilled maker, hitting the limits of their ability, might just stop. An expert, though, will find a way through the problem, constantly unfolding new possibilities within the process." I just found out about an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; The Power of Making. The V&A; and Crafts Council celebrate the role of making in our lives by presenting an eclectic selection of over 100 exquisitely crafted objects, ranging from a life-size crochet bear to a ceramic eye patch, a fine metal flute to dry stone walling. Power of Making is a cabinet of curiosities showing works by both amateurs and leading makers from around the world to present a snapshot of making in our time. The exhibition showcases works made using a diverse range of skills and explores how materials can be used in imaginative and spectacular ways, whether for medical innovation, entertainment, social networking or artistic endeavour. Making is the most powerful way that we solve problems, express ideas and shape our world. What and how we make defines who we are, and communicates who we want to be. For many people, making is critical for survival. For others, it is a chosen vocation: a way of thinking, inventing and innovating. And for some it is simply a delight to be able to shape a material and say ‘I made that’. The power of making is that it fulfills each of these human needs and desires. Those whose craft and ingenuity reach the very highest levels can create amazing things. But making is something everyone can do. The knowledge of how to make – both everyday objects and highly-skilled creations – is one of humanity’s most precious resources. Items on show include a life-sized crocheted bear, an electric guitar worn on a high heel, extreme cake decorating, and our old friend the Makerbot. The show also includes a Tinkerspace - meet designers, and see Making in action

UK Residency Opportunity (Engineers, Makers, Designers)

The Victoria & Albert Museum have announced a residency programme that might be right up your street: We have just issued a new open call for a one year residency targeted at UK based engineers, makers and designers who wish to develop their practice by responding in their own way to the rich engineering heritage of the Museum – from the Collection’s origins in the Great Exhibition of 1851 and architectural history of the site, to the pioneering engineering systems at work in the Museum’s ongoing Exhibition Road Building Project.   We are ideally looking an engineer and welcome applications from practitioners from a variety of engineering disciplines (structural, civil, mechanical, engineering design, electrical, biological etc.) but we also welcome applications from makers and designers with a demonstrated interest in engineering. The resident should be interested in engaging with an operational building site and live architecture project. At the same time, he/she should be keen to develop public programmes with a range of different audiences linked to the Museum’s 2016 Engineering Season. We are therefore looking for practitioners who want to use this residency to create, build and present their work to the public while allowing museum visitors to follow their work in progress and understand their creative process through open studios, workshops, talks and other participatory programmes. http://www.vam.ac.uk/blog/artists-residence-va/new-open-call-exhibition-road-engineering-residency Information for applicants Residency period: April 2016 – April 2017 Bursary: £10,000 for twelve months (subject to tax and national insurance) Studio at the Victoria & Albert Museum in South Kensington An additional budget for production of public-facing activities or displays Deadline for applications: midnight, 17 January 2016 Interview date: 26 January 2016

High Resolution view of Victoria Crater on Mars

NASA has released a beautiful high resolution picture of Victoria Crater (below) taken from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. If you zoom in on the full resolution image, you can see the Opportunity rover's tracks and stopping points (faint lines with bright dots) around the left part of the rim.The photo was taken in July 2009, so many of Opportunity's tracks have already been obscured by wind and sand.

Calling for volunteers and help for a food bank in Victoria, Australia

I hope it is ok to post this, is not please delete it. I am a volunteer for Northpoint Church Tullamarine in Tullamarine, Victoria, Australia. Before becoming jobless I had no idea about food banks at all and I was sent there by my job agency to "work for the dole". What I soon realised is that a food bank is not just a place handing out food.... We have people from all sorts of social background coming every week to get help in the form of basic foods, fruits, vegetables and baby food. They all have one thing in common: Not enough money to feed the family or themself. When I started I only saw it as a "must do to make the job agent and gouvernment happy" thing, but after a few days I realised it is so much more. The gratitude people show for giving them things we otherwise might take for granted is sometimes hard to ignore and their stories can make your eyes run like a waterfall. Unlike food services run by councils or other organisations we don't judge! This means you can come every week with your "Healthcare Card" and get some food withoug someone asking questions or judging. I could not get any up to date videos but here is a short video showing the services provided and how we all work together: If you have some spare time and like to help other people in need please contact Northpoint using their website: http://northpointcentre.wix.com/northpointchurch#!contact/c24vq Pastor Loren Pratt will welcome anyone with a good heart :) People with office skills, good organistional talents highly welcome. If you have a small van and would be willing to transport the food parcels from the headquarter to one of the outlets it would be fantastic! Commercial size fridges and freezers are thing in great demand with our client base growing faster every month, if you have some to spare we would be happy to use them if they are in a good and clean condition. All the food we can provide is either paid by members of the church through donations or provided by bakeries, supermarkets and state wide food services. If you run a food business and can provide vegetables, fruits or eggs it would be great if you could join us. Having a financial sponsor would also be great as the entire system only works through volunteers and donations, bills build up and costs are rising, so every dollar counts. Northpoint is a non profit organisation backed by the Northpoint Church and entirely run by volunteers. If you have questions and would like to get more information feel free to contact Northpoint through the above link or send me a PM.

Bird scarer - with noise

I'm looking for any ways of building a repurposed material bird scarer. Not a visual scare (scarecrow, CDs/foil, silhouette) but something that makes a bit of noise. I know a keen allotment owner who has purchased an air gun to shot into the air and scare parakeets ! He would hate to actually hurt a bird - and I feel there has to be a better way. Rattles - tape recorders that can be set outside, wind powered stuff ? Anything that might stop my friend eventually hurting himself (I'm also concerned about the effect air gun pellets could have on the soil). Thanks for any suggestions. Victoria J

Recycling gets sexy with the recycled bikini

Victoria's Secret has introduced a bikini top that's made from recycled polyster and spandex. It's pretty significant in its utter insignificance. Finally, a luxury item can use recycled materials and I hope that we see more companies doing this, but there's only a few square inches of material there. And can they do it without having to make it literally green? It all reads like more of a publicity ploy than any real movement towards sustainability.Patagonia has been using recycled materials for several years and have been making real progress in putting their money where their mouth is. Will others please start following in their footsteps please? Lots of others? link

Cal Lane's steel lace

The photo of this cut-steel lacework make me want to run out to the shop, grab the torch & some scrap steel, and start carving. Cal Lane cuts shovels into lace, oil drums into tapestry, and I-beams into filigreed sculpture with incredible delicacy. From the New York Times article: "The work is about the contrasts between the industrial and the fanciful, the opaque and the transparent. Ms. Lane described herself as "a person who always has opposites in my head."She started her adult life as a hairdresser (her mother owned a salon in Victoria), but she said she was a tomboy and "welding seemed to fit me better." The mix of feminine and masculine vocations (teasing hair and welding steel), she said, is encapsulated in her work."Check out more of Lane's work here and here. Amazing.

DIY Dialysis - an Ultimate Make?

There are makers, and there are Makers. Two years ago, Dr Malcolm Coulthard, of Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, had a patient too small for dialysis. The baby girl had suffered kidney problems following bowel surgery, but, at only 6 lbs in weight, she was too small even for the "child sized" dialysis machines.Rather than let the girl die, Dr Coulthard, with the help of senior children's kidney nurse Jean Crosier, designed and built her a dialysis machine from scratch in his garage.Every so often, the idea of Instructables Awards pops up, but only for people on the site. Kitewife said now they are people who deserve a Robot patch, and agree, but more so. We need to recognise the achievements of people like this, so I propose we set up an award - the Ultimate Maker award.Nothing dramatic, just a simple certificate they can frame, a Robot patch, and maybe a logo they can display on their website if they have one. What say you, Makers?BBC Story

'Most X on record' climate list?

Does anyone know if there's a list/graph of the 'Most -whatever- on record' for the world, season by season? What I mean is, countries recording their hottest summer, wettest winter, worst drought, etc. I ask because it would give a pretty striking visual for climate change. It seems everywhere I spend any time it's the most something season on record, or at least for 40-50 years. Here's a little list I compiled a couple years ago, from where I'd been: 2002 - summer - New Zealand - worst drought on record          - summer - Western Australia - worst drought on record          - spring - Malaysia - hottest on record          - winter - Ireland - wettest on record          - autumn - Ireland - mildest 2003 - summer - Australia - worst drought          - summer - United Kingdom - hottest summer, hottest day          - summer - New Zealand - highest UV index 2004 - summer - British Columbia - longest          - summer and autumn - British Columbia - worst fire season 2005 - winter and spring - Victoria, Australia- wettest          - summer - Australian east coast - hottest          - summer - Western Australia - coolest Since then it's been worst droughts, floods, cyclones, wettest summers, and now snow. If it hasn't been graphed, it should be.

Tool-use observed in molluscs!

Everybody knows that humans are "special", somehow different from the other animals on our little blue planet, but it is very difficult to define just how. An early casualty in defining "special" was tool-use.  First chimpanzees, then primates, even birds were observed using tools - hammers, anvils, probing tools, fishing rods, weapons. Now a mollusc is being presented as a tool-user. The veined octopus Amphioctopus marginatus has been filmed by divers collecting coconut shell halves (actually human litter, dumped in the sea) and carrying them away to use later as a shelter. Their habitat is open, featureless sediment, no protection from predators.  The shells provide vital shelter in the exposed underwater plain. If the octopus finds a single half-shell, it digs it up, carries away and then turns it over when needed. If the clever creature is lucky enough to find two halves, it stacks on inside the other, then later "rebuilds" a whole coconut, except this time with a yummy octopus filling. This is another example of high-level intelligence in these bizarre animals.  To me, octopus are a prime candidate for the next "special" animals on Earth, once those polluting apes are out of the scene... Yeast fermentation for composting solution?

I threw some hay off my lawn and some green weecds into a garbage can, some sugar and yeast and formented it to slug beer but the slugs did not like it. It then fermented further to vinegar, and a crust of green "Mold?" covered it. seems to have protected the vinegar from further fermentation. I tried a second bigger batch ( morning glory weeds) with less sugar but after a few days of good fermenting it went rotten and stinky. So there are probably thresholds for sugar content. Would the yeast be a way of adding fertilizer to organic gardens? Yeast can (I think) convert urea and nitrate to protein. Perhaps some green stuff has enough sugar to work without sugar addition. vine prunings? maybe. The first batch, i put bleach in to kill off microbes before I added water and yeast. Perhaps hydrated lime would work instead of bleach and also get the ph good for yeast fermentation. This might be a cheap way of liming your garden. (Here in victoria, hydrated type s lime is cheaper than limestone for garden addition. (But it contains more calcium!) The "yeast tea" or vinegar tea could be used on the garden and the weeds could then be transfered to normal compost or used as mulch. It might be an alternative way of using diseased materials of composting seedy weeds to kill the seeds. Brian

Can someone please help me create a simple 7-segment number display? [see below for details]

Background info : My name is Simon. I'm a member of the Classic Celica Club of Victoria (Australia) that competes in an anual event called the Winton 6hr Regularity Relay. It's a 6 hour long track event with about 40 teams and 6 cars per team. Each team has one car on the track for the 6 hours. Prior to the race, each car nominates a time that they believe they can consistently do for their share of the race (usually approx. an hour each). Points are awarded for each lap achieved that is within 1 second of the nominated time. Points are deducted for any lap that is faster than the nominated time. The thing is THE DRIVERS CANNOT CARRY ANY FORM OF TIMING DEVICE IN THE CAR. The aim : To build a board that clearly displays a 3 digit time. (eg: 1min 56sec).  Team members will time the car on the track and then use the board to display the time for the driver to read as they pass by the pit wall.  (note: this practice is not against the rules). The requirements : The board must be big enough, and clear enough, to be read from >75m away. The adjustment of the board must be very quick and intuitive. (the task of timing is shared around and there's no time to train people to use the device). The board must be light enough to be held by outstretched arms. No timing device is required in the board itself. The time displayed on the board isn't always the time that is recorded. Adjustments are sometimes made for one reason or another. Scrolling through the numbers is fine, so long as you can scroll both up and down. Each digit should be completely individual (ie: not linked). Layout : [see attached images] I was thinking of using a typical 7-segment display layout made up of 79 x 10mm LEDs. The actual physical construction of the board is well within my ability. It's all the circuitry that i am clueless on.  I am a total newbie so please be gentle when describing electronics. I'm new to instructables but i have spent quite a few hours searching this site for answers. The thing i've found is that my device is far simpler than anything posted on here but i'm still too much of a newb to work out how to do it. ps: I hope i have posted in the correct section. Simon.

Extreme water cooling idea for computer chilling plus dust protection

I started to play around with some compressor cooling devices, otherwise known as fridges, freezers or airconditioners ;) As with everything it started with a lot of reading, some doing, more reading, well you get the point... Anyways, I am now running an old and portable split airconditioner on hydrocarbons instead of the already escaped R22 refrigerant. With all this experimenting I got reminded that my computer does not really like to do hard gaming work on these hot days. There are already a lot of infos out there on how to use water and/or heatpipes to cool your system. One thing that they all have in common is that you need a chiller to cool the water. Now, there are really tons of options here - from using an old bar fridge to hold the water up to big direct chillers that can be used 24/7 and cost a small fortune. Here in Victoria the weather might be more forgiving but up north the humidity will be your main enemy if you want to use any decent cooling system. Imagine 90% humitiy and the water condensing on pipes and coolers inside your computer... Some systems compensate here by using a temp of around 12°C at the lowest to minimise the risk of condensation. But I think we can do better for cheaper if we are willing to get dirty and salvage some scrap. If it also a great way to protect your computer in a dusty and hot workshop enviroment! Let me explain the thought: Considering the costs for a decent air cooled system over the expense for just a basic water cooling kit it might be worth spending the extra money otherwise. What makes a normal and not overclocked computer go too hot assuming it is clean and free from dust? Right - the outside temperature and how hard we actually use it. Normal systems are designed to work at a room temp between 18 and 24°C, we are often lucky to have it under 30 in the summer. Getting a CPU to just under 70° if the outside air is already over 30° is hard if not impossible. But what if the computer would be in one of these fancy server rooms that are kept at 16° throughout the year? Problem solved, just win the lottery to get your server room build. Step back a bit and think again ;) If we make an additional and well insulated enclosure to put the computer in we would only need to worry about making it pretty much air tight and keeping the inside always under 20°C. Now follow me to my imaginary shopping trip... First step is getting a decent sized cooler box - you can build your own of course I would go for these oversizes Esky chests. Next step is a visit to the local hard rubbish collection or scrap yard. We look for a bar fridge or water cooling tower that has a condenser that will fit on the side or back of our cooling box. Prefer something old running on R22 instead of R134a if you can. If the system already has one or two service ports for filling even better, otherwise see you get one from a different fridge or freezer. The fun starts back home where we now make a big mess. The cooling system needs to come apart and if not a tower the fridge around it has to go without damaging pipes or condensers. Perfect would be to have a working system and to keep it in this condition to avoid the illegal escape or refrigerant. It also make it easier than having to refill it again. On the other hand getting a system that is already professionally evacuated as most scrap yards now do anyway can make the modding easier - up to your skill set and options to have the system checked and filled. Once we have a naked cooling system we get the cold side into the cooler box. Either by creating a slot to slide it in or by feeding the hoses through holes if you plan to do your own thing in terms of testing and filling. The compressor part and "hot side" are mounted securely to the outside of the box. If you still have the thermostat working and connected you can now check your homebuild fridge. To get the computer inside you have several option, IMHO the easiest is use one big enough hole to get all cables to the outside. You want this hole to end up as airtight as possible, I found candle wax to be a good sealer if you place some painters tape on the box first. So far this was the easy part, the hard part is now to make sure the humidity inside the box stays as low as possible. When the compressor starts cooling the evaporator will go to very low temperatures, even if you set the thermostat to 10° the cold side will condese or even freeze the moisture in the air. Unlike with direct cooling option inside your computer we now have a "cold trap" outside the coputer that we use to our advantage! Easiest option here is to have a catchment under the cold side to collect the condensing water and to let it discharge through a small tube to the outside. Once the system was operating for a few days there should be no moisture left inside our box unless it is not properly sealed. At this point you could be tempted to just set the thermostat to the coldest possible - I advise against it! Imagine the inside of the box is below freezing - the capacitors won't like it to start with and since we now have all surface subcooled the moisture can condense everywhere not warm enough, including your mainboard. A temp of around 10°C should be more than enough for normal gaming and gives the compressor a chance to turn off every now and then so any ice can drop off and exit. If you like the idea use it and make a featured Instructable out of it, my time is too limited at the moment to get serious with this.
