Video camera advice?

So, I've been using my ancient camera to film craft videos for a while now, but I'm hoping to invest in something better - but I'm not sure what. I was hoping to invest in a DSLR that shoots video, but since my budget is pretty tight, I'm thinking of cutting my losses and getting a low-end camcorder. Does anyone have any advice for me in this regard? I'm hoping to get something in the region of $200 or less (student budgets are tough), but that films good quality video of relatively small things, such as small DIY projects. A local tech store has the Canon LEGRIA HF-R36 on special, so I was thinking of trying that, but I don't really want to rush into this.

Video camera pedestal

I want to know how these camera pedestals work, see example here: http://www.vinten.com/product/quartz-one-pedestal Has anyone tried to build something similar? What I would like to achieve, is simply a tripod system where the camera can stay level at the height I choose, and it should be easy to change the height without loking the center column. Is this a very hard thing to do?

My video camera

Hey, I have an old Sony DCR-PC5 video camera, and I want to start using it again, but i'm not sure how, if i can, to get stuff onto the computer. It can take both a memory card, or a small cassette. I'm not sure how to set it to record onto the memory card, but the only one I have is just 32mb. There is a cord that will plug into the "Digital I/O" port, and then into the Serial Communications Port on the computer. Any ideas on how to get stuff onto the computer?

Streaming video

So I bought a hidden camera off eBay, and it's a total joke. The receiver is decent, but the camera itself, not so much. It is connected to a 9 volt battery, and the only way to have the battery last longer than 3 hours is to attach multiple batteries in a parallel circuit. I was wondering if there was a way I could, using the camera, record the video directly like using a video camera. The camera is small which is good, but I need a better way to record video. Thanks in advance.

Video "out" recording? Answered

On certain cameras, DVD players, VCR players it has the red, yellow and white "out", if I were to have a spy camera with the yellow and white "out" how would I record that in the space of a largish pocket? Kipkay's Instructable features the exact same style of camera (go here www.instructables.com/id/Covert-Spy-Sunglasses/)Pic is of my one, not my picture though (sorry). Red is for power.

Making a Flip video camera into a video player...? Answered

Ok, I was looking at this camera I just got (Flip Video Ultra) and I thought, "Gee, I wonder if I can play videos from my computer on it?" I got a converter (Mpeg Streamclip) and got it to convert to a .AVI file. It worked (after a quick name change... Who woulda thunk changing the name to VID0000# would work?)! Sort of...A few problems:1. video quality is iffy. It looks all... I don't know the term, but I'm going with random colors.2. no soundAny suggestions?(P.S. There is some footage I took with my other Flip camera. I'll post it in a bit...)Here is the "stream info" of footage I took using the camera. It could help:Path: /Volumes/FLIPVIDEO/DCIM/100VIDEO/VID00001.AVIDuration: 0:00:20Data Size: 6.63 MBBit Rate: 2.65 MbpsVideo Tracks:Generic MPEG-4, 640x480, 30 fps, 2.59 MbpsAudio Tracks:MS ADPCM mono, 16 kHz, 64 kbpsStream Files:VID00001.AVI (6.63 MB)

Camera Suggestion

I do ALOT of youtube videos, but I also need still good quality still pictures and my camera just died. I have a budget of around $400.00 and need something that takes HD video I would like something that either has an external mic jack or takes good audio, my subscribers complain of a high pitched whistle in my current videos (I cannot hear it) It would also be nice if it could be set up to stream directly to a computer, as I would like to record classes, and some of them are 8-12 hours. If the Contour +2 took still pictures I would compromise on the picture aspect because I shoot a lot of outdoor action stuff, and a waterproof helmet cam would be nice.  Right now I use a Nikon S8000, and liked it, but it just wasn't durable (plus the sound issues) I know I am asking a lot, and will have to compromise something, but I cannot go over $400-$500 budget. Please recommend something you think would work

Can I Repair These Video Cameras!

I've got a Magnavox Video Escort and a JVC Compact VHS. Both cameras are dumpster finds. Neither work and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest tests/repairs or whatnot to get them to work. I realize these cameras were tossed because they don't work but sometimes things get thrown away because the owners don't want to take the time to find out WHY they don't work. The Escort is utterly inert. I haven't got a way to recharge the battery, assuming that it would if I did and an adaptor I know works has no effect on this camera. The JVC works but the view finder remains black.

CrowCam - Video camera taped to a crow

I was reading an article on attaching cameras to wildlife (Clipped to a Shark's Fin, Collared to a Bear or Attached to a Crow's Tail, Wildlife Cameras Come of Age in BioPhotonics) that mentioned cameras light enough to adhere to birds, specifically crows.Check out this video of a crow flying, foraging, and using tools all from a tailfeather-perspective:http://users.ox.ac.uk/~kgroup/tools/movies/crowcamS3.mov(Let me know if you find an embedded version)The work was done by a group at the University of Oxford and published in Science late last year:Video Cameras on Wild BirdsThere's also a nice NPR piece on the subject here:Crow Cam Captures Creative Behavior in the WildI find crows to be one of the most interesting urban animals, and I love how this video lets me voyeuristically peer in on their antics. Which animals would you watch?

Here's the CHALLENGE

Most of the mechanical stuff I dream up I can put together. I plan on submitting an Instructable in about 3 or 4 months. But I'm not so great electrically. So of course one of the things that I'd like to do, but find to be insurmountable is an Instructable for a digital camera that will monitor the exterior surroundings of my car for as close to 360 degrees as possible while I drive and while I'm parked AND be concealed AND be able to record all of the events for 24 hours. I'm sure someone out there would know how to do this.

How to build a strongbox for a video camera?

I guess that is what I want to build. I basically need a box to hold a camera and a GPS that can also withstand a lot of damage. It would probably be a lot like the rigs they use to send cameras up with weather balloons.  Any recommendations for materials? I can build it well enough, however, I don't know what can take damage and protect the electronics at the same time.

8mm Tape Video Camera to Computer

I'm kind of a digital kinda guy. I've lost touch with the ways of the oldschool. I video tape and produce skateboard video's in my spare time. I normally used a high end digital camcorder which makes the jump to the comp for production the norm. I recently had to use an old 8mm tape camera due to a lens that was needed that I didn't have on me during a street skate. whats the easiest cheapest way to get it from the 8mm tape in the camcorder to my comp?

Cheep High speed video camera Answered

I am a science teacher that needs a "cheep" high speed video camera for a project we do as part of our forces and motion unit.  The students build carts out of paper and straws, then race them down an incline.  I videotape them and then analyze the video and the students determine the speed of their cars. (see video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqI5H8d4r7M). As you can see from the video, the slow motion video is very blurry.  the frame rate is okay (they are only traveling at 2-4 meters per second, which means about 8-12cm per frame, perfect for the save we are using)., but the initial position and final position is just an estimate due to the blurry car. Maybe I am not using the right terms, I do not know a lot about film/photography, but i need the individual shots to be clearer. I currently use a Flip video camera, which is good because it is super easy to download the videos for student anaysis. What kind of camera will suit my purposes, without spending more than $400? Thanks, Covo

AAA batteries for a digital video camera?

Hi folks. We were recently given a digital video camera that takes three AAA batteries. It's not the worlds greatest camera as you can imagine but it would be fun for our grandchildren to use in the summertime in the garden or possibly for the odd project. The problem is that as I'm not yet a millionaire I prefer to use rechargeable batteries, the ones we have are quite adequate for the jobs we have needed them for up to now but this camera eats them for breakfast taking them from a full charge to flat as a pancake in a matter of ten minutes or so. I'm the first to admit that when it comes to all things electronic I'm a complete dunce so without getting into the technical ins & outs of power drainage & how many amps live in an ohm or however it goes can anyone suggest a supplier in the UK where I can get batteries that are up to the job? I don't expect them to last all day long but rather longer than ten minutes would be good. Alternatively if anyone could suggest a suitable battery pack and charger to replace three AAA's that would be great. If it's any help the camera in question is a Mustek DV5300SE, as I said not exactly super hi-tech but could be fun for the kids. Thanks in advance for your help. NG.

Knex video camera holder (TNKIT entry)

This is a knex video camera holder I threw together in like 5 minutes.  The original one failed and also used too many parts. This camera can be either used with a quad pod, or be mounted on most 5 layer thick knex guns with addons.  The camera is easy to put in and take out, but when its in, you can't make it fall out.  Surprisingly, it's very sturdy, and can be used as an FPS view in a knex war and an alternate scope. I was gonna add yellow  rods into the midsection like I did with the sides, but I ran out of red connectors, so I couldn't.  Just pretend they are there.

attaching a Canon 5D Mark ii to a spinning motor with variable speed controller

Hi, We're looking to attached a Canon 5D Mark ii to a spinning motor with a variable speed controller. We've attached a rough sketch to this post.  Does anyone know what kind of motor might work with a camera weighing 4.132lb/1875g? It has to be powerful enough to spin the camera solidly and at a steady RPM. We'd also like to add a variable speed controller to adjust the speed of the rotations.  We were thinking of using a battery powered drill. Is there a way to  add a variable speed control potentiometer to an electric drill? We are based in Europe. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! Matthew & Emelie
