Mold materiel that is safe for the oven and will not stick to lexan/PETG? Answered

I'm making a helmet, and I hit a wall: I need to make the visor. I have the helmet made, and I need to make a negative mold of the visor, which I would put in the oven, with the PETG/lexan to "melt" the plastic to form over the negative mold in the home oven. But, again, issue is what mold materiel can I use which will be safe up to 300 degree Fahrenheit and not stick to a semi-melted plastic?

Fiberglass and Lexan/PETG in a home oven? Answered

I'm looking to make a helmet here soon, but, I need to make a visor for it. I know I can use a heatgun to shape Lexan/PETG, however, I have heard that using an oven is a better choice. My question being, if a fiberglass mold/template save to put in an oven? It would be a pepakura process mold. After reviewing some steps, I need to amend another question onto this: would it be better to use another material for a model? Again, I would be using a home oven, and using PETG/Lexan. The new material would have to be castable, as I would make a positive mold of the inside of the visor, to composite for the thickness of the PETG/Lexan.

A No-See-Through visor for a Halloween costume?

Hai there! I had an idea for a type of robo-ish, army costume. I wanted a gas mask, with the visor tinted out, then a ring of red LED's behind it, but I didn't want my face to be seen, and i didnt want to buy a $20 can of window tint for a little visor when it might not even work. Anyone have ideas?

Does anyone know what type of glue I can use on the bracket of my drivers side visor? Answered

I have tried super glue and twice jbweld. If I knew what type of plastic it was that may help too. The visor is for a 02 Santa Fe.?  This is not the first time this visor has broken, I had the dealer replace two of them for cracking on the arm part. The first time I used jbweld it didn't do anything so I added more catalyst and it stuck, but as soon as we had some very frigid temps, I moved it and it broke. The whole movement of the arm is plastic upon plastic, not the best system, the tolerance is very small so it increases the friction on the parts and the stick together when it is cold.

Lexan one way mirror/visor

Hello I recently bought some lexan sheets and was thinking about making a visor out of it, given it sturdiness. For a nice finish i would like to make it like a space visor, a golden-chrome one way mirror. I have already tought about the molding process but the one way mirror finish is more difficult than I expected: can you give me some hints? Also, I thought of three ways to get the results I want an would appreciate your opinion on them: - Car adhesive mirror finish (but I don't know if it will take on the lexan) - Spray paint, golden chrome (a thin coat should let through enough like to make it usable) - Golden plating via electrolysis and conductive paint (last hope, this requires expensive and poisonous chemicals) With my most sincere thanks

How would you use a standard servo and linkage to raise the visor of a repro Ironman helmet?

I am thinking that I could use a standard servo (or 2) to do the raising of the visor incorporating a DPDT switch to reverse the polarity to bring it back down again. I am struggling with the translation of the rotary action from a servo to push the visor out and up.. What would be the best linkage to use? what would be the interface between the servo and the linkage

What glue to use to fix my sun visor

My sun visor has broken on my 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. Pretty much same as this guy, https://youtu.be/Joa_CnGxmp8. Because I'm cheap I was going to try to glue and treat it gentle instead of paying $40 for a new one. What glue would give me the best bond and any idea how (if needed) to clamp it while it sets? The plastic has ABS written on it, so I presume that refers to Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene.

How to Construct a GUY Daft Punk Helmet?

Hey guys, I was wondering how you would build a GUY Daft Punk helmet out of a motorcycle helmet. I have purchased a really nice motorcycle helmet for $30 and I started last night to make an outline of the golden frame that surrounds the helmet. I was planning on making this out of cardboard, and then after measuring it to make sure it fits the helmet precisely, covering it with Bondo. Once that was done, I was going to construct the plastic visor, which is where the trouble comes in. Does anyone have any suggestions on how that visor can be made? I have no idea how to do vacuum form, which is unfortunate. Any answers would be appreciated. Thank you.

Making night vision goggles

I have read and watched a couple of videos about making night vision involving welding masks, sun glasses, digital cameras ect.  i was tempted to make the sun glasses attached with lcd lights, but the brightness may be a issue.   I thought of doing it with a pair of goggles like snowboarding goggles with the red and blue paper but im not sure how i would house  the power supply for led's.      What i would like to do is get a webcam and make it inferred and add extra Led lights, and situate this on top of the goggles visor then because i have a broken PSP (i say broke someone stole the battery and i just haven't used it in 2 years) wire that to the camera if possible so the PSP receives the picture and can power the LED's and camera. Then make a housing for it to sit in front of the visor.   That would make a great pair of goggles to go paint balling with. If that isn't possible what would be better using the red and blue paper, removing the the webcam internals and fill the housing with led's powered by a battery, Still situated on the top of the goggles.    Or taping a digital camera instead of the PSP camera to it.   What would have better quality for inferred? There's no point me demolishing a camera or a PSP if adding paper to the lens does as good of a job

How would I go about making a half mask like the lower part of Snake Eyes' mask in the Rise of Cobra movie?

In the movie his mask is basically a black visor and the lower half is all one piece of black matte plastic, but it's formed to the face with lip detail and everything. Is there a relatively easy way I could replicate this effect without getting into the big long process of making a mold of my own face and then forming plastic to it? No rush or anything, just thought it might make a fun project.

Lexan. Just to be sure...

So, I was thinking about an Halloween mask, a steampunk diving dress. The most complex thing is, of course, the head piece. More specifically, I'm in a bit of a quandary with the visor: I need to make a convex, ellyptical dome of clear plastic. Since I need to fit that into a frame I need to make it from flat panels; this way I'll get the shape I want. I think I'll use Lexan: it seems to be quite sturdy and easy to work on. In theory, all I have to do is heat the thing up to 200°C (400°F) and it will bend like a charm, but I'm a bit worried about exalations and whatnots; can someone help me here please?

Making a dwarf welding helmet out of fiberglass.

Hey everyone, I've been thinking about a new project lately. And for that I need a lot of tips. So here is what, why and how. Introduction: I'm currently making a welding helmet out of an old beer keg as in the instructable of bricobart. When I started with it I though about using the keg as sheet material to make a papercraft mask, probably Dr. Doom or the ABC warrior Hammerstein from the first Judge Dredd movie. I quickly realised it wouldn't provide me the result I like to have, so now I'm just making the 'simple' version from bricobart. But I don't give up that easily. I also want to make something out of fiberglass and epoxy resin for a while, just to have the experience and to try it. So my quest for the perfect helmet/mask continued. I found Fallout helmets, which have tubing on which I could attach a breathing device. But finally I came to this Erebor helmet from the Hobbit. The plan: The plan is to make the Erebor helmet with a hinged visor. I am planning on using several pepakura helmet models and combine them to make the helmet suitable for my welding purpose. The hinged visor and all other mechanics like that I can work out myself. The paper helmet will then be covered with epoxy and fiberglass as can be seen in several other instructables. To make it smooth and for details, I will use car body filler. (I already know EVA foam is the better choice for the helmet, but I don't trust is with the temperature of the welding and I read things about epoxy resins not werking properly on EVA foam.) However, I never used epoxy resin/fiberglass/car body filler or any of these kind of materials. So therefor I need al the help I can get from here. What kind of stuff is suitable for my welding helmet due to high temperature (gradient)? What is the best way to go so all parts will connect properly? Is it wise to start this project?(Please don't answer no, because I will probably won't listen). Painting tips, epoxy tips, general tips etc. Thanks in advance.

Inflatable electric car

Inflatable structures have always fascinated me. They can achieve amazing strength to weight ratios, and only take up space when required. At Instructables, I often sit on an inflated ball!: https://www.instructables.com/id/Ergonomic-work-station/ So, I've fantasized about an inflated car that's just as safe as something more massive, but weighs a mere fraction -- deflate to store or park! XP Vehicles is stepping up and trying to make it real with a direct-ship sub-$5000 electric car: A baffled pressure tube system (think Zodiac rubber boat) provides the actual supporting and protective structure of the vehicle. How safe is it? Recall that NASA recently threw tens of millions of dollars of ultra-sensitive electronics onto the surface of Mars from nearly a mile up and then bounced that same delicate gear for over a mile over boulders and everything worked flawlessly. This was due to the instruments being shrouded in an already expanded inflatable housing that has served as the model for the Whisper body structure. Anyone looking at the warnings on their visor can be concerned about the dangers during airbag inflation so XP simply built a vehicle entirely out of next-generation, always inflated, safety airbags. The engineers for the Whisper are confident you can drive it off a 25-foot cliff without serious injury to its passengers. They claim this is the safest car ever designed for drivers, passengers and pedestrians.Initially designed for the Southeast and Western Asian markets, the car will float in an emergency such as a flood or tsunami and can be assembled by any two people of reasonable competence. The vehicle, similar in appearance to rounded edged sports cars, will be configurable online by each customer much like you build and customize personal computers online today at various major retailers. Colors, trims, features, and styles will be user-configurable on 4 different body-types.

HOW CAN I MAKE A TYPE OF PRIVACY WINDOWS(INSTANT TINT AT A FLIP OF SWITCH FOR WHEN PRIVACY NEEDED ANYWHERE/ANYTIME)? Answered

WHAT I AM TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH HERE IS A SAFE, HOPEFULLY INEXPENSIVE, RELIABLE, REASONABLE, AND VERY EFFECTIVE KIND OF INSTANT WITH VARIABLE OR ADJUSTABLE KIND OF TINT OR PRIVACY FEATURE TO WINDOW(s) IN PERCENTAGE AS TO HOW MUCH VISIBILITY IS ALLOWED THRU A WINDOW(s) FROM BOTH IN & OUT.CONCEPT IDEA: WHAT I WAS THINKING OF IS A FEATURE WE CAN ADD I GUESS SIMILAR TO TINT FILM THAT IS INSTANTLY, AT A FLIP OF SWITCH FOR WHEN PRIVACY NEEDED ANYWHERE AT ANYTIME ALSO ALLOWING VARIABLE "PRIVACY" TYPE OF SWITCH(SO A MAIN ON/OFF POWER SWITCH, AN INSTANT "ON" 100% DARKEN SWITCH, AND THE VARIABLE TYPE OF "DIMMER" AS TO IF WE NEED A VISIBILITY RATIO GIVING 0%-100%) - FIRST OF ALL WE NEED TO ACHIEVE AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE 100% VISIBILITY TO SEE THRU THIS GIVEN WINDSHIELD(s) BOTH WAYS FROM INSIDE AND OUTSIDE BUT IF I NEEDED OR WANTED INSTANT PRIVACY, I CAN FLIP A SWITCH AND/OR ADJUST (MAYBE A TYPE OF ROTORY DIMMER LIKE SWITCH)THE AMOUNT OF VISIBILITY THAT WILL CHANGE HOW MUCH CAN BE SEEN BOTH IN AND OUT.OK SO FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING.... WHAT I WANT TO FIND/CREATE IS BASICALLY A KIND OF TINT FOR MY CAR (AND EVEN MY HOME OR OFFICE.) I GUESS MY FOCUS IS IN THE AUTOMOTIVE AREA BEING THAT WHERE I LIVE, WE HAVE ENFORCED LEGAL RESTRICTIONS BY LAW AS TO HOW MUCH LIGHT CAN BE PASS THRU THE TINT FILM AND WINDSHIELD OF A VEHICLE. HERE IN HAWAII A PASSENGER CAR HAVING MINIMAL OF 6 WINDOWS 1. FRONT WINDSHIELD2. REAR WINDSHIELD3. FRONT DRIVER DOOR WINDOW4. PASSENGER FRONT DOOR WINDOW5 & 6. PASSENGER REARS OR 1/4 WINDOWS BY LAW A FILM ADDED TO THE WINDOW CAN ONLY BE 35% DARKNESS TO THE SIDES AND REAR OF THE PASSENGER 2/3/4 DOOR VEHICLE AND ALLOWABLE 4 INCH VISOR TO THE VERY FRONT WINDSHIELD = CONSIDERED FOLLOWING THE LAW. OF COURSE PEOPLE DO GO DARKER AS IN UP TO 2.5% OR MORE COMMON IS THE 5%-20% ALL AROUND WHICH IS PRETTY DARK AND I CAN SEE WHY WE HAVE SUCH LAWS AS ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT BEING INSIDE A VEHICLE WITH 2.5%-20% ALL AROUND CAN & WILL GET DIFFICULT TO DRIVE ACCURATELY. ESPECIALLY PERTAINING TO REVERSING! LAWS IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FOR 5-DOOR PASSENGER CARS, STATION WAGONS, VANS, SUV's, LIMO's AND TRUCKS. BUT WE WILL JUST STICK WITH THE MAIN 35% TO REAR AND SIDES. ITS EASIER....IN CONCLUSION, IF I OR WE CAN CREATE A TYPE OF METHOD OR DEVICE THAT CAN GIVE US THIS EFFECT OF PRIVACY AT OUR LUXURY. THE ADVANTAGES I'M AIMING FOR IS IT IS 100% LEGAL AS IN NO ONE CAN TELL RIGHT OFF THAT I HAVE TINT IT LOOKS VERY NORMAL TILL YOU HOP IN AND I TURN IT ON OR ADJUST IT THEN BEING EITHER INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE VISIBILITY RATE CAN BE NOTICED, IT CAN BE ADJUSTED DURING MY DRIVE RUNNING ERRANDS OR IF I END UP SITTING IN TRAFFIC UNDER DIRECT HOT & BRIGHT SUNLIGHT OR EVEN JUST PARKED AT A OPEN PUBLIC PARK, BEACH, WHATEVER... I CAN GO FROM 0%-100% INSTANTLY BY A FLIP A MAIN SWITCH, THEN BE ADJUSTED LIKE A HOUSEHOLD DIMMER KNOB ALLOWING FOR PERFECT PRIVACY OR SAFETY TO VISIBILITY DRIVING WHILE TRYING TO BLOCK OUT SUNLIGHT OR UNWANTED NOSEY PEOPLE PEEKING IN WHILE PARKED. HEY IF WE WANT TO GET MORE INTO IT AND COMPLICATED YET MORE TO LUXURY WE CAN ADJUST EACH WINDOW SEPERATELY! Ex.: I WANT/NEED THE FRONT WINDOW I SAY AROUND 60% & 5 OTHER WINDOWS MAYBE 15% BECAUSE I AM SITTING IN SLOW TRAFFIC DURING THE PEAK OF THE DIRECT SUNLIGHT AT SUN DOWN AS I'M SURE ANYONE WHO DRIVES OFTEN EXPERIENCED THAT IT CAN BE VERY BLINDING AND DANGEROUS AS YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SEE THE RED TRAFFIC LIGHT OR PEDESTRIAN, ETC... THEN I GUESS AS WE TRAFFIC START MOVING AND THE SUN IS NOW GONE IT IS DARK NIGHT, I CAN SAFELY ADJUST THE VISIBILITY TO ANY OR ALL WINDOWS...SEE COMPARED TO A ONE TIME DEAL AFTER HAVING A CERTAIN PERCENT TINT INSTALLED ON YOUR WINDOWS WHERE NO MATTER WHAT IT IS ALWAYS THE SAME, BUT WORSENS AS WINDOWS GET DIRTY IT GETS LESS VISIBLE TILL YOU GET CHANCE WASH THE WINDOWS OR PEEL/STRIP YOUR TINT WHICH WILL BE COSTLY & OFTEN MESSY. IN HAWAII IT IS FINED $250+COURT FEES+TAX, ETC. PER EACH WINDOW!!! MEANING IF YOU GOT LESS THAN 35% PERCENT LIGHT RATING ON THE MEASURE TOOL USED ON 5 OUT OF YOUR 6 WINDOWS = DAAYUUMNNN EXPENSIVE $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ LOSS. AND IF YOU ARE CAUGHT HAVING EVEN MORE THEN THE 4INCH VISOR AND/OR THE WHOLE FRONT WINDSHIELD ITS FEDERAL OFFENSE AND ITS NOT GOOD... I DON'T EVEN KNOW OR WANNA FIND OUT EITHER.I HOPE I WAS AS BEST AS POSSIBLE CLEAR TO WHAT I WANT TO ACHIEVE. SORRY IF IT KIND OF LONG BUT DETAILS IS VERY IMPORTANT, AND I AM OPEN MINDED TO WHATEVER ANYONE CAN PUT ON THE TABLE IN IDEAS OR CONCEPTS TO THIS. NO WORRIES, JUST SHARE WHAT YOU THINK OR WHAT CAN BE DONE. PRETTY AWESOME IDEA RIGHT???? I HOPE TO GAIN SEVERAL IDEA CONCEPTS, DESIGN OR WHATEVER THEN MAYBE WE CAN FIGURE THE MOST EFFICIENT WELL ROUNDED BENEFICIAL TO PRODUCE. ** THANX FOR YOUR TIME

Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day - Dec. 8

This sounds like loads of fun: Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day!Scheduled for December 8, 2007. Just spend the entire day in costume and character, but don't actually explain what you're doing- context, costuming, and behavior are key! Never admit you're a time traveler, and make really, really bad attempts at keeping a low profile.Three options:1) Utopian/cliche future- "If the Future did a documentary of the last fifty years, this is how badly the reenactors would dress." Think Star Trek: TNG or the Time Travelers from Hob. Ever see how the society in Futurama sees the 20th century? Run with it. Your job is to dress with moderately anachronistic clothing and speak in slang from varying decades. Here are some good starters:- Greet people by referring to things that don't yet exist or haven't existed for a long time. Example: "Have you penetrated the atmosphere lately?" "What spectrum will today's broadcast be in?" and "Your king must be a kindly soul!"- Show extreme ignorance in operating regular technology. Pay phones should be a complete mystery (try placing the receiver in odd places). Chuckle knowingly at cell phones. 2) Dystopian Future:- This one offers a little more flexibility. It can be any kind of future from Terminator to Freejack. The important thing to remember is dress like a crazy person with armor. Black spray painted football pads, high tech visors, torn up trenchcoats and maybe even some dirt here or there. Remember, dystopian future travelers are very startled that they've gone back in time. Some starters:- If you go the "prisoner who's escaped the future" try shaving your head and putting a barcode on the back of your neck. Then stagger around and stare at the sky, as if you've never seen it before.- Walk up to random people and say "WHAT YEAR IS THIS?" and when they tell you, get quiet and then say "Then there's still time!" and run off.- Stand in front of a statue (any statue, really), fall to your knees, and yell "NOOOOOOOOO"- Stare at newspaper headlines and look astonished.- Take some trinket with you (it can be anything really), hand it to some stranger, along with a phone number and say "In thirty years dial this number. You'll know what to do after that." Then slip away. 3) The Past:- This one is more for beginners. Basically dress in period clothing (preferably Victorian era) and stagger around amazed at everything. Since the culture's set in place already, you have more of a template to work off of. Some pointers:- Airplanes are terrifying. Also, carry on conversations with televisions for a while.- Discover and become obsessed with one trivial aspect of technology, like automatic grocery doors. Stay there for hours playing with it.- Be generally terrified of people who are dressed immodestly compared to your era. Tattoos and shorts on women are especially scary.

Since We're on The Topic of Dreams...

Well, I've seen quite the lot of dreams being posted, and it just so happened I had one last night:Starting from when I can remember:Me and two of my friends got selected to fly into space to investigate mysterious disappearances of items from the Space Station..So we go through training, and tests, and finally comes the date of liftoff(I can't recall much though here)while were are in the space station, I notice something...this isn't the space station NASA sent us to, Its an exact replica of the parking lot at Macy's in my town...I look around..and my one friend (cody) says "Hey man, thats your car isn't it?""Wait a sec.. IT IS!"I walk up to the car, and reach into my pocket...my keys are chiming off each other as my hand shakes..I unlock the door, and sit inside..checking the sun visor, and to my astonishment, there is a picture of my crush (whom I wont mention)the picture is folded and faded..I get out of the car, and look around..I'm back in Cape Canaveral!in the parking lot of NASA...as I walk with my two friends in the doors, I am greeted by Eric Schmidt (CEO of Google)((which I never knew till i searched for it today after my dream))he says "It'll be great having you with us in our mysterious hunt for the missing items in the Space Station."My friend (cody) says "Wait a second, I forgot my travelers guitar" (in the trunk of his car)so we go to get his guitar and as he's pulling it out, I notice something in his car..A GUN!"Why do you have a gun in your car cody?"as I finished saying that, these two men ride up on a moped and demand (in broken English):"Best not make any sudden movements"as the two guys talk amongst themselves, I whisper to cody"Psst, grab your guitar, and get down"He grabs the guitar, and ducks down as I reach for the gun, which ends up to be a .22-250, and shoot the one guy in the leg, he falls, the other guy pulls from his pants a handgun, he fires three shots, and I fire two, they all miss,I load my second to last shell, and take aim...POWthrough the chin, into the throat, and out his neck my shot traveledhe lays motionless on the ground as his partner, hobbles on to his moped and rides away..I gather myself, and get my friend, as we walk by the entrance to the building I see these two gentlemen playing a tune, my friend sits down, and strums along..they were playing Boom Boom by John Lee Hooker...which incidentally was the song I awoke too this morning....prolly the weirdest, most vivid dream I have ever had...Sorry about the plethora of misspellings, non-capitalization and spotty punctuation.. its late, and I need sleep..
