waste

We are students of Edinburgh College of Art. We are now running a project related to fly-tipping within Edinburgh. We came up with an idea and we want your opinions. Many thx!! Step 1: Current Problems There are many many bins on the street now in most of the community of Edinburgh which is dirty and out of order. Though the quantity of bins reached a high level, the quality of them are not good enough. Problems such as unclear sign, dirty and full bins are kind of caused more fly-tipping even just beside the bins. Step 2: Waste House Idea We came up with an idea of waste house in each community of Edinburgh. It is a plan in the long run. We want to build a waste house in the community, and reduce the bins on the street gradually. The ideal result will be there is no bins on the street but all in the waste house. The advantages of the house are: it's much easier to keep the house clean than keep all the bins clean on the road; the classification signs will be designed clearer; it's easier for the city council to collect, so that they can collect on time in case they are all full.

Toxic Waste* Barrels Answered

I was wondering where to find those multipurpose metal barrels like the ones you find conveniently scattered across landscapes in first person shooters.  They also seem notorious for holding toxic waste in movies.  I was thinking it would be at some kind of surplus store. Can anyone help?

Waste Oil Heater

Hey guys, I am looking for some info on how to take an existing oil burner 'gun' (I have an extra Beckett burner) and rig it up to burn waste oil. I make biodiesel already, but I'd like to try burning some waste vegetable oil and motor oil as well. I figured since I have the extra gun, I might as well try it on that. I'm assuming I'll need to set up a pre-heating tank, and some sort of pressurized system to spray the oil since its thicker and heavier. Anyone already done this?

So I see a lot of projects with like 60 LEDs of the same type or something like that, and they use a separate resistor for each LED. Why do they do this? Why not just get one resistor and hook it up to ground or VCC? Please explain, thanks!

UK: Boycott Marks & Spencer's

Heads up -- Marks & Spencer's in the UK actually DYES their (perfectly good if past-due) food BLUE before tossing it out, intendending to deter or prevent urban recyclers and others who think waste is immoral, from scavenging their dumpsters. Reportedly they also slash the soles of shoes that get tossed so that they can't be reused. It makes NO difference to M&S, yet company policy is to ruin the goods. Imagine stomping on a bunch of bananas you couldn't sell at the end of the day, rather than giving them to a hungry person. If waste bothers you, consider thinking twice before having dealings with Mark's and Spencer's.

Power the American nation with waste food!

A new study shows that the energy used to produce the food wasted by Americans is greater than the energy stored in the oil and gas reserves around US shores. The situation is probably worse than the study suggests, since the only data available on wasted food was from 1995, when 27% of all food was wasted.  Since then, food prices have fallen, and waste has probably increased. Michael Webber and Amanda Cuellar at the Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy at the University of Texas at Austin calculate that this is the equivalent of about 2150 trillion kilojoules lost each year. That's more than could be gained from many popular strategies to improve energy efficiency. It is also more than projections for how much energy the US could produce by making ethanol biofuel from grains. Obviously, Americans (and every other similarly-wasteful society - we're just as guilty in the UK) should be doing their level best to reduce their wasted food, but it also strikes me; there is gold in them thar bins. Rather than persuade hundreds of millions of lazy "Westerners" to change their ways, why not exploit them?  Why not make money off them (or at least, save your own energy costs)? We already have a bus driving around for free, and a car running on garbage.  Can you come up with a house-hold scale scheme? Could you cut your energy bills to zero, just by collecting other people's garbage for them? Could you set yourself up as a supplier of motor fuels (gasoline or diesel replacements?  methane?) Come on, iblers, do your thing! New Scientist article Oil data The study itself. (I have attached a PDF of the study, if you're interested.

New washing machine waste pipe overflowing Answered

I'm the opposite of knowledgeable when it comes to plumbing however I have done a fair amount of searching through forums to find an answer to my problem and unfortunately still have questions. To make it easier, I have taken a picture of the pipes as well as the actual waste hose behind my machine. The hose from the machine sits in what I believe is called the standpipe on the left and goes approximately half a foot down. I have taken apart the p bend (or u bend - still don't know the difference) and confirmed that there is no blockage. I have run a snake down and around all the pipes with no issues and also used some soda crystals just incase but water flows through the pipes easily. What I believe is the issue is that the output from the machine is producing water faster than it can travel through the pipes which are 40mm in diameter. I believe that if I removed the p bend and just replaced it with a 90° corner, it would work fine but obviously it's there for a reason and particularly with the pipes only a 6 feet from the drain, I'm very reluctant to do that. One more thing to point out is that on the right hand side, there is a pipe which I have capped off. I was wondering if that trapped air could be preventing the water flowing down as quickly and if I need to find some kind of air valve which may allow air out? As it stands, I have just put the waste hose into the sink next to the machine and that has let me at least use it for now. I appreciate any advice people can offer.

Plasma Arc Waste Disposal

I was watching the local news earlier... and they started talking about a new waste plant being built in Ft. Pierce, Florida.Basically, they vaporize the trash and sewage sludge under a vacuum, and use the by product gases as fuel for the plant and power turbines. Steam is going to power a local juice plant. Solid by product (rocks and such) can be used for construction etc.On top of that, the by product gas - when burned - is cleaner than burning natural gas or garbage. Even if you think climate change is a myth, I think you can appreciate cleaner air to breath :P This plant is going to eat up the local landfills too :)I just thought it was pretty cool. This is the first plant in the United States and the third in the world (other two are in Japan and are much smaller).Comments?

What a waste of F'ing water....

I know it is important to keep certain systems running reliably... But this seems ridiculous. I came home and heard a lot of water rushing into the drain. Not far down the street, I see a yellow box dumping hundreds of gallons of water. So I ran inside, grabbed a flashlight... ran outside... flashlight is missing a battery... ran inside, got battery then ran outside. I got next to the box and called the phone number on the side. Water management picked up. I explained that it was a yellow box next to a fire hydrant on a concrete pad. The tech immediatly knew that it was just "flushing the system" and said it would be on for awhile. He thanked me for calling and I hung up. 6 months ago, that box wasn't there. I've lived in this city for over 15 years and never saw this. To me, it seems like a lazy and poor solution to some problem I can't seem to find searching google. My guess would be sediment from lack of use (but iono). Anyway... I thought I'd share my frustration.... Oh, it was on for 2 hours! after I got home..... just wow.

Dirty, dirty little inkjet printer

This one isn't really an instructable, because (duh) it doesn't actually describe how to make something, however, I think it might be of interest to some people of the same sort of mindset - it's about inkjet printers, and what you might find if you dismantle one.I've taken quite a few apart (I work in IT and I have to dispose of them when they die) - they have something called a 'waste ink reservoir' - and it's quite surprising how much ink they actually 'waste' into it.The Dirty Little Secret of Inkjet PrintersThe 'waste' is ostensibly to clean the print heads - and yes, some of that is inevitable by nature of the technology, however, I'm pretty sure there are other motives behind it too - that ink ain't cheap...

Suggestions for harmonica hybrids

Hey, I just posted my giga-monica instructable and was wondering just what else I could use. To save you the search, I've hollowed out a spot about an inch or so long and just wide enough to house the connector of a usb device into a cheap harmonica. The idea being that you can insert something here to prove to your friends that yes, you don't have a life. So far, i've tried a flash drive, a 'Blues-tooth adaptor' (conceived solely for the name), but cannot think of ANY other devices you could use.. at all. In fact, to be blunt - what tiny usb devices can a computer use? (Picture shows roughly how much room you've got - no specific measurements because I'm looking for generic items, not specific models) Thanks in advance, McDouche

How to strip cables to free the copper inside?

E-waste collectors in countries like Ghana collect cables and then burn them to get rid of the plastic and then sell the copper. This process is not environmental friendly and harms their health. I'm working on a project to find better ways to treat imported e-waste. Is there a better way to strip cables that would not imply burning, and that would respect the worker's health? Thanks!

Where lame computers go to die.

If you're like me you probably have an "out of sight, out of mind" attitude towards garbage. Usually, when I throw something out, I don't give too much thought to where it is going to end up. The problem with such an attitude is that the garbage ultimately has to go somewhere; it is unlikely that we are going to start blasting our trash into space any time soon. So, the question is, when we toss out really toxic things like old computers or televisions, where, in fact, are they ending up? The edge of town? The edge of the county? The next state over? West Africa? A small shanty in China?National Geographic has an amazing article in their current issue about the fate of such e-waste."People have always been proficient at making trash. Future archaeologists will note that at the tail end of the 20th century, a new, noxious kind of clutter exploded across the landscape: the digital detritus that has come to be called e-waste."Photograph by Peter Essick

Reclaiming Wasted heat to make electricity

I work in an aluminum casting facility and we're looking for ways to save energy etc... one thing that we've got no shortage of is heat (during the summer the temp near the ceiling above the furnaces is over 230F) i've looked into stuff like they do in steel mills in Germany where they run pipes through the furnace linings and then use the heat from the furnace to make steam and run steam generators. but i was thinking of something else today. would you be able to just mount a bunch (or one huge) peltier exchanger (or whatever they're called) on the ceiling above the furnaces and use that to make electricity? i'm aware that they create electricity because of temperature differences (and not specifically from being hot or cold in general) so would we have to cool one side of the unit for maximum efficiency? are there any other ways that anyone knows of to turn waste heat directly or indirectly into electricity?

Making something instead of buying is waste of time?

While searching the Internet for someone that has made their own Hot Press for making WPC (wood plastic composite) boards, I stumbled upon a Tshirt forum.  A man had posted a topic about how to make his own Tshirt heat press for making Tshirt designs.  The other forum members all decided it was a waste of time.  He should not bother trying because it's complicated.  In the end he would spend way more, and he could buy a used or cheap heat press locally. Is that not the ultimate irony?  People who post in a forum about making Tshirts tell another member that do-it-yourself is a bad idea.  Like buying a heat press to make your own Tshirts is a much better idea.  Do they all think they will be the one with that great design to put on a Tshirt and corner the elusive $100Billion Tshirt market?  Or do they just like to make their own Tshirts instead of buying one pre made.

couple of questions about recycling E waste proccess??

Ok ladies and gents Im thinking about setting up a business recycling ewaste, computers, TVs etc. before you go and say its not worth it, i understand where your coming from but every small operation ive seen looks for one thing (normally gold) anyway im looking for a faster way to actually pull the PCB apart, so i can get at the gold pins mostly. I was thinking something like a BBQ, with a fume cabinet on top, at a low controlled heat to melt the solder (that can then be recycled) thoughts? secondly im looking for a place i can recycle capacitors, i know there are none in Australia but if i remove them, vacuum seal them, box them and then send them to america for being recycled (i dont mean to send our waste to other places but i really don't want to go and dump them here) lastly the copper tracking on the board is there a way to get this off? i know they are made with chemicals but is it possible to get them off and recover it?? some further information, this is not my first foray into business, i am not looking to get rich quick, my planned production place is a business where we fix electronics (battery chargers, golf carts, forklifts etc) my main aim is to help the community, maybe make a dollar or too and basically clean up. thanks guys

Traffic light plates and other waste glass reuse

What does a municipality do with old traffic lights? Why, they can make them into dinner plates! Recycled Glassworks makes plates from old traffic light covers from retired lights, often the ones replaced with the newfangled LED kind. Oddly, the green lights end up as blue plates... dunno if this is an artifact of the plate-making process or if the light behind is very yellow, necessitating a blue "green" light. But while that's probably their most dramatic product, there's another. Most glass recycling is limited to bottles and jars. The only thing to do with broken windows, or broken glass tabletops, or other glass of this kind, has been to throw it away. Recycled Glassworks accepts this kind of glass in addition to the traffic light kind. They cut it to size and kiln-bake it in a mold (a process called slumping) to produce extremely attractive bowls and plates.Way to go, Recycled Glassworks!

Home heat exchanger or heat engine anyone?

I know for a fact that in the EU we can now have energy effient homes that utilise the heat from common sources like water heater, solar or just what is under the roof to generate electricity or heat other things.Started to wonder if ever someone tried something in that region on an affordable hobby level.Down here properly insulated homes are rare as a pearl in a supermarket oyster. So my main interest would in utilising the excess heat under the roof during the summer times. This season I measured and average of around 60°C during the day.On those day over the 35°C mark it went up close to 75°C in some areas.I guesstimate that if the draft areas are sealed off a bit a fan system should able to suck air at about 50°C out for about 6 to10 hours per day during the summer. If I would add a small heat exchange made from a solor hot water panel and some piping:Would hat combine heat output be enough to power an ammonia fridge or even freezer? What options are there that you guys created to generate some electricity from other heat sources?Thinking about the exhaust heat from the hot water system or heater. One thing I am planning on is a small solar heater for my big fish tank.Currently not anywhere near a window but would like some Arduino to control a water pump by temperature comparison to provide warm water during the winter months for free.Beats two 400W heaters if you ask me LOLThe potential for some easy to create heat exchange system to generate a bit of electrictiy or power heat exchange system is huge.Australia is full of badly insulated homes and the US is not far behind. And not matter how good they are all those homes still heat the roof cavities like hell.
