The web archive at web.archive.org is one of the best websites I've seen. (yes instructables is another.) Ive known about it for a while and wanted to share it. It lets you go back to past versions of web pages, simply enter the url and hit "take me back" For as big as it is, you can search a lot, though not everything is there. Note: Sadly instructables is not searchable from this site due to a file labeled "robots.txt" which prevents them from searching instructables.

No, not the World Wide Web--colonies of spiders that build giant communal webs to catch their prey. However, there is an interesting twist: spiders maximize their food supply per spider if the colony includes 500 spiders; more than that, and each spider gets less.As the number of occupants grows, the volume of the webs they construct increases - but the surface-area-to-volume ratio declines. The area of web is the all-important determinant of numbers of prey caught, so bigger colonies catch proportionally fewer prey items.Reminds me of Dunbar's Number, the theory that says that groups of larger than approximately 150 people are no longer optimal because humans cannot effectively have and maintain that many social relationships.Spider Webs Article

Hi! I am offering my services for some simple web design, or 2D flash animation, or both! I use the Godaddy web hosting service, and use Flash CS4 for all my animating. If you wish to be hosted by another service, I can do that as well. Here is some of my work; www.brianschopshop.com I did this website for a local barber when I lived in Wisconsin. I try to keep an up to date relationship with my clients. If you wish to contact me email me at email@example.com, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I will answer comments to this forum topic as well. I charge about 50-100 dollars per page depending on the content, and animation is charged by the length at 10 dollars for every 20 seconds.

Hi all guys and ladies ... so glad i found this site looks like fun. I found you all here due to a search i did looking on tips of building and hosting my own web site, and what i read here in great detail with no fuzz i just thought was the bees knees. I do have one problem but, if i use my ip address to host my own server on an old machine and use a new pc for working here at home, the ip address will be the same, will this not lead to people trying to gain excess to my every day to day pc? jamstir.

Thank you for adding the "More by the author" profile banner to the top of each Instructable. Three author-instructable images used to appear in the right-hand panel along with some recommendations but disappeared with the last site upgrade. The new location at the top of each instructable is a nice touch ...Thanks also for restoring the graphical "Launch Stats" ...

I'm trying to put a multi-purpose platform about 90 feet up a very large tree. The first 25 feet or so from the ground is completely devoid of branches, so I threw a rope around some branches higher and then prusiked up it. However, the throwing-the-rope-up-and-prusiking method will be ineffective higher up, as the dense braches would stop a rope thrown from getting anywhere. So I was thinking that I'd do a via ferrata type system, where I had multiple slings attached to my harness and would attach them progressively to branches as I climbed, so that I could clip in, climb a few feet, clip in again, unclip the previous sling, and repeat this. However, a short fall onto normal webbing or rope would cause serious injury. I looked at buying a via ferrata kit, but the only ones I can find are one-time tear versions. I really don't want to have to pay ~ 100 USD every time I fall, so I was wondering if anyone knew how to make a simple, reusable energy absorber, preferably from webbing, carabiners, etc. (i.e. the kind of stuff the average climber has lying around). Thanks!

Well i have been searching the web for real tech like the movies. and i've always been a spidey fan unfortunately the web shooters don't exist. because no one knows about the fluid or the shooter i got some idea's for the fluid i think most people believe that there is glue in the mix but i think maybe liquid rubber would work as long as it's still liquid until it squirts out or like some kind of string to shoot out with it to stick to it to make it a solid web .and for a very important part of the shooter a small narrow nozzle i'm not a science wiz so please give me some ideas or comments.

I know a little about scripting web pages, but I'm mostly a hardware guy. I need to figure out how to make certain text on a web page change based on where the client's location is. (For instance, I need to say "serving (client town here) and the surrounding area since......." and I also need the phone number to change. So far the best option I have come up with is creating a different web page for each town. I know this script is possible, but I just don't know how to make it. If anybody out there knows how to script this, I would help me a lot. Thanks!

Is it strange to ask for feedback about an Instructable before it's published? It's my first one and I'd like to know what people think. Here's the link:https://www.instructables.com/id/EN95RCDG068LMN1Feel free to get nitpicky about details like grammar, spelling, content, style... anything really. Thanks!

Hi, I am web designer & developer form Nederland. I've been looking around here for some time and it seems like there are not many series that cover everthing about how to design and then develop a website. I thought it would be awsome to create a instructsble serie that let's someone develop there own website in pure HTML & CSS. So I have a couple of ideas. - explaining the basics of flat design (todays standard in web design) - creating a website in pure html & css from the ground up - creating a compleet wordpress theme - much more If you like one of the above ideas or if you have one of your own, please let me know. Thanks for reading. And let me know what you think! Greetings from Holland.

Back in 1998 Nina Katchadourian spent a number of weeks repairing broken spiderwebs with red thread. Interestingly, the spiders would reject the thread over the course of the night and repair it themselves by morning. Definitely check out her work.

Recently Ive been very jumpy about spyware. it seems that on99% of everywebsite I see, there's a spyware ad in a corner. Ive been wondering how much spyware I've installed without knowing.... Antispyware software is good, but it doesnt always do the whole job. Most only block a program after its already started. Ive heard about the Web Of Trust. Supposedly, its a network or people who rate the safety level of a website. Ater you install the program, a safety rating will appear next to it on google, IE or Firefox. I tried researching it, but I cant find any RELIABLE sources. I was wondering if you guys have heard about this or know of something similar. Im ver worried about spyware and would like to know of other safety precautions. Aso talk about spyware in general here.

Design collective For Use/Numen used about 117,000 feet of tape to make this fantastic web in a former stock exchange building in Vienna. It's strong enough for people to walk on. In fact it wsa made for a dance troupe. “The installation is based on an idea for a dance performance in which the form evolves from the movement of the dancers between the pillars,” explains For Use’s Christoph Katzler. “The dancers are stretching the tape while they move, so the resulting shape is a recording of the choreography.” Check out the link for more pictures and a video. Some sites use software to analyze the information that we search for. A downside to this personalization is the amount of information that it is left out. Any opinions?

We've been at the Web 2.0 conference using our Epilog to laser etch all sorts of things for free. The biggest job that we did was a complete tattoo on a brand new MacBook Pro that a gadget blogger from Chile bought the previous day just for this! It was the biggest job of the show and took 26 minutes to do. Other etches usually take a lot less time as most people are etching phones (lots of iPhones).Check out some of our awesome pictures. Bring in your gear tomorrow, and we'll give it a tattoo too!More Links: CNET loved us Wired was inspired Fayer Wayer article with more pics Fabulous fractals QR codes more QR codes ... and a bit more video

Hey! Tony Danza is 176th in the world and #1 Actor. I don't know how they do it this but Marlon Brando and Rutger Hauer are just after him. His popularity has been growing but since last month he has lost 18%!:( Have a look at the stats here http://www.thepoplist.com/card.data/Tony%20Danza_12620214.htm

CandlePower Forums is a set of forums about assorted types of lights. Mostly flashlights of various sorts, including a great deal of info on LED flashlights and battery performance in flashlights.Anyway, I found there this set of postings that make up a very nicely done ("Instructable class") tutorial on how to build a two-led light with "night glow" feature (several different versions, actually.) Worth checking out!

I made a k'nex Gun that does not require the power of a spring or rubberband; It's made purely out of k'nex. I didn't really know what to call it, but I got the idea after I noticed that when holding it, it looks like you're shooting webs like Spider-man. I got the idea when I was watching a History Channel program about historical assassinations, and a famous gun that was examined was a gun that shoots when you make a hand-shaking gesture. The k'nex gun shoots about 30 feet. It also has an auto-ejecting shell, but it's single shot. You also have to load the bullet in cartridges. Baed on the definition, do you Instructablers think that this would be a worthy Instructable, or should it stay as a forum? P.S. I'll have pictures of it up soon.

This is the first idea that I have worked up the courage to post and I would like some help getting my ducks in a row. I don't have anything written down yet so here is a verbal breakdown of its function: A retractable tape measure mechanism is attached to a length of cord. This mechanism is, in turn, placed in a sealed chamber with a barrel wide enough to accommodate smooth movement of the cord. The free end of the chord is attached to a dart/wadding that is used to block the chamber from the outside. Pressurized CO2 or equivalent gas is pumped into the chamber using a pressure nozzle with a emergency release valve. CO2 is pumped into the chamber, dart/wadding is fired, dart/wadding and cord pass through the barrel till loss of velocity or reaching the end of the chord, the mechanism pulls the cord and dart/wadding back to start and the process repeats. this is just an idea and I would like some help getting it functional, and an equation for thrust vs drag would be nice :D

I recently created a website for a local church in my area- everything went great, but now the secretary wants to be able to edit those pages as she wishes. The thing is- every thing I have done is through Dreamweaver and is all custom coded. She wants to be able to edit it like you would a Word document. Is there an easy way I can export the pages into an easily editable file that almost anyone can figure out even if they have little technical know how? I know the computer it is editing on is WIndows (I think) Vista (or XP), if you need a program to edit the files. Thanks in advance.
