Weekly Challenges: a request with wider implications

OK, so these Weekly Challenges... Although I am not personally entering them for the foreseeable future, they're an interesting idea, but a week is terribly short notice for most people to get a decent entry put together, especially if they have a busy life (job, children, school, the usual). It would be much better to have a longer-term calendar, maybe linked to from the contest page, with the weekly challenges noted down in advance. While we're at it, why not put the normal contests on the same calendar? What I have in mind is something that looks like a Gantt chart, like the image, but where the image says "subtask", the chart would name the contest. In fact, why not have a central Instructables calendar - the same document could list contests, challenges, scheduled updates, HQ events, appearances at Maker Faires etc.  You could even use it to keep track of staff birthdays and anniversaries...

Gone! For a Week! No Instructables! :-(

Hey everyone. I'm going to be gone for a week. My family is going up to northern Michigan and there isn't any internet up there. Just thought I would bring it up... it seems like a good discussion starter. *How often is everyone on instructables? *Do you have symptoms of withdrawal when you are away? (Just kidding... sorta. Lol) *Anything else!

A week in a proper car.

I've been driving Womble for exactly a week now, and some things have occurred to me. I thought I'd share them, in no particular order.I enjoy driving again.Because I'm driving, not steering. No power steering, no servo brakes, I am in touch with what the car is doing every second I'm driving. I do something, and I get instant feedback. I'm suddenly redeveloping all the good driving habits I used to have - looking further ahead and watching traffic more, correct hand-position on the wheel, feeding the wheel through my hands as I turn, slowing with gears before brakes. It's a cliche, but it's seat-of-the-pants driving.I drove Kitewife's Focus a couple of days ago, it was a disaster! Taps the brakes, do an emergency stop - steer with two fingers, weave all over the road. There's no feedback, nothing to tell me by feel exactly how much braking I'm doing, or how fast the wheels are turning. I had to look at the dials to check the speed and watch the revs before changing gear.Modern cars, I have decided, are only one step short of video games.Maybe that's part of the reason for the rise in roadrage? There's no need to take pride or care, because the car does it all for you. Spend enough money, and the only thing that will kill you is if you drive at a tree. Even that may not be possible with radar-triggered brakes soon to become more common. If you have abdicated all responsibility for your safety to a mindless mechanism, who do you blame if something goes wrong? Where do you direct your anger? The only target left is the other driver.I seem to have joined a sub-culture.I'm not the only driver of a proper Mini in my area. I pass two or three every day. Amongst others, I've seen a white one, striped pink, with a bubbly blonde driving. I've seen a 70s Traveller in immaculate condition. Several jobbing Minis, in every-day-driving state, and a Mini wedged full of teenage lads, fully kitted out for racing, roll-cage and all.Every single one of them waved, flashed their lights or otherwise said "hello" as we passed. I have never seen drivers of other kinds of car do that. It's pretty good, getting a friendly wave from a stranger. It lifts your day, puts a smile on your face. It's like we share a happy secret. Minis attract comment more than cars that cost fifty times as much.If people see a Ferrari in the car park, they might nudge each other and make admiring comments, but if they see a Mini, they come over, say hello. On Saturday, a huge hairy rocker, returning to his big Japanese family car, children in tow, left his children in his car, and came over for a chat about the surprisingly roomy interior of my Mini, and an idle chat about the type of engine (single-point injection, if you're wondering).People might wish they could afford a supercar, but they are genuinely jealous of people who actually own a proper Mini.Everybody has a Mini in their closet.I'm not really a petrol head, and I don't work with petrol heads, but suddenly everybody wants to talk about cars. They all seem to have had an adventure in a Mini, their own or a friend's. Half of them regret having sold their Mini years ago.OK, so the old Minis don't meet modern safety rules. They're slow, utterly lacking in luxuries (my heater has two settings - on or off), but if somebody started building them new, using the original molds for the panels and frames (they still exist), and charged five or six thousand pounds a pop, they would make an absolute fortune.

Ouch, bad week for me.

This week pretty much sucks so far. To fill everybody in, I bought myself a nice little gift for my birthday, a 100 inch projector TV. I'm still working on the setup, even though my birthday was in July. Things take time, unfortunately. I was planning on hooking up my desktop PC to the projector, to show pictures and whatnot, it'll be my DVD player too. I have an ATI remote wonder that'll work perfect for it. I already have it integrated into the surround sound, so all I had to do is get a 25 foot VGA cable to run from the PC to the projector. Or so I thought, until it came across my mind that I wouldn't be able to use my desktops monitor. I thought I would just make a solid state switch, but unfortunately, a VGA cable has 15 pins - I don't think they make a dual throw 15 pole switch. So the backup plan was to get a second video card, to use in conjunction with the onboard graphics to do dual monitors. I can make a simple app, and use one of the programmable buttons on the remote to switch which is the primary display. So I went shopping, and I asked a friend what he thought of this one I wanted to buy. How convenient, that he just happened to get a new one, and he would sell me his old one, which just happened to be PCIE x16, for $50.. which is less than what I was looking at, and triple the quality. I buy it, and wait 2 days from it to go from San Fransisco to my house, in central MA. I install it, it works! Yay! I install the drivers, go out for a little bit, come back... dead computer. The thing was a goner, the PS blew, and took the motherboard with it. So I called up compaq... 20 days out of warantee. Great! At that point, I thought it was just the PS. It's 300 watts, running 2 hard drives, 2 CD drives, a 3.3ghz Celeron, and an ATI x1600 graphics card. So I go shopping, pick up a 500 watt one. Come home and install it... same shit. So I knew the motherboard was blown. I look it up, a new motherboard is $200. That's how much I paid for the damn computer! So it's ebay time, I find and win the same model for $250. So yeah, so far, the cost of this week is $350. $100 from the PS. So I put the computer back together, put it on the desk. I wake up the next morning to guess what? Look at the first picture. That's right, the glass desk shattered. The desktop was on the other side, thank god, but guess what got screwed up in that nice, conveniently timed breakage? - The new PS (I exchanged it, but I had to drive an hour to Circuit City) - One hard drive, 2 weeks old. - $90 - Old school soldering iron - costed me $80 back in the day. - A whole stack of DVD-RWs - $30 - A stock of CD-Rs - $15 - A pressure gauge from my Pneumatic cannon instructable - $10 - A bunch of misc electronic parts - $20 - My damn desk! - $120 So far, $715 total. Murphy's law in action right there.

Extend logged in time to at least a week

If at all feasible, could you please extend the logged in timeout to be at least a week? I get the newsletter once a week and I click on links to the articles I'd like to read more. I then go back and read them only to find I have to log in and then refresh every article I want to read. I'm sure the refreshing takes up more bandwidth and memory than keeping my session in place for seven days or so. I have checked the 'keep me logged in' option but it only works for a couple of days. Thanks!

I Saw KITEMAN last week.....

During my vacation last week, the wife and I were out at a local restaurant that had a little "tourist trap shop" in it, and we stopped in to look around. Man was I surprised to see that Kiteman had been modeling for a stuffed doll they were selling. As soon as I saw it, I just knew I had to "get a picture of it" (it was nearly $50, so buying it was out of the question). I only had my phone with me, so no High def pictures, but I was able to capture him, one half at a time, in two photos I have attached. . . For those NOT familiar with Kiteman, I have linked to a Guide To Kiteman.
