Presidential Weirdness

Proving the only thing weirder then presidents are presidential candidates:Dennis Kucinich admitted during a debate that he witnessed and communicated with a UFO. Bill Richardson (Governor of New Mexico) then called for the federal government to "come clean" on UFOs.In vaguely related history, Jimmy Carter was attacked by a swamp rabbit. Time is weird

Huh. I just realized that I have now lived in the house I'm in (and consequently, my two oldest children have lived here - the youngest has another year or so to go) longer than I lived in the house where I consider myself to have "grown up" (ages 8-19 or so.) As a side effect, this also means that I've lived here longer than I've EVER lived any place else. It doesn't really feel that way; I don't know whether time is compressed as your get older, or stretched when you're young (probably both.) Time perception is weird...

Weird cable? Answered

OK so im wondering if this on the market (a little back story) Im building myself a home media center using an old pc and xbmc. I'd like to connect to my TV through HDMI so i can get full 1080p video from my media center the only problem being is that my old pc doesn't have an hdmi port only a dvi, so i was wondering if a cable or box existed that could combine the dvi from the graphics card and audio from the headphone port into HDMI allowing me to simply plug the other end into my TV. --------DVI (female from graphics card) / HDMI (male)<--------- \ --------Audio from PC (female from little green hole by usb slot on the mobo) Something similar to that, preferably cheap otherwise I'll simply pick up a new $50 card from Newegg.

Weird email!

I want to express my discontempt for a message I just recieved: it says that a good instructable must follow the following criteria: NOTE: I have only published 1 instructable, titled Chrono-SOCCER! - details a finished project with instruction (not just links to instructions) - has clear images that you took of your project (web-found clip-art is not acceptable) - uses proper spelling and grammar - contains appropriate cautions or safety considerations - does not violate someone else's copyright - does not violate the Instructables terms of service - is typically written about something you are very passionate about and want to share. This is what I think: 1.- I put in put in the whole instructions (I don't even know how to put a link) 2.- I DO NOT own a digital camera; I put a table instead 3.- I apologized beforehand of being Mexican and perhaps making some spelling mistakes. 4.- This instructable shows how to play with a watch, not dangerous by the way 5.- This game is of public domain here in Mexico; like paper-rock-scissors in USA 6.- Believe it or not, I DO like reading the "small letters" and it does NOT violate the TOS or otherwise invite people to do so 7.- Obviously I like the theme or I wouldn't have published it thanks for reading this and I hope someone can do something about this because they are just sending pre done e mails!

weird inlogging "bug"

Hello. Almost whenever I try to log in on this site, there comes up a screen that says: ''Sorry, we can't find that account, or your password didn't match. Please try again!" If I click somewhere else, I'm still logged in, and can do everything normally. What causes this, and what can I change to prevent this? Greets, Mike / Dr. richtofen

What is this weird transformer?

I opened up a microwave hoping for a microwave transformer. But instead i got this weird looking one. i was hoping someone may be able to identify it and tell me if i could use it for a tesla coil. also, there was no capacitor??!! the largest caps i could find were those three red ones in the pics. it apeared to have litz wire on the outside and normal wire wind on the inside. Numbers in it were - 97INV (im not sure if its a 1 or i) and F69144TOAP and finaly F607C. Update: ive now taken it apart, see picture. so, im guessing the litz wire was the primary (240v) and the solid wire is secondry (around 2kv). the secondry contained one really long winding and then another winding which only went around once (like in a normal mot). It looks like some sort of high current flyback. also, the secondary is also some kind of litz wire. It has many smaller hair thin enameled wires woven into a single strand. My guess it this thing operates at really high frequencies

Do you own weird or exotic pets or do you know anyone with weird or exotic pets? I knew a guy who lived not too far away from me with four Siberian tigers, pretty cool but he ended up having to send them to cat tales, but anyway... Why am I asking, I just wonder if other people have cool pets like that. The tiger in the pictures name is Delilah, she was 8 when the picture was taken.

Am I weird?

So... I'm starting to think that I am weird... because I like art like Mona Lisa, Arnolfini's marriage, and stuff... But I love stuff like death metal. It's just like watching Mona Lisa headbang. I like doing origami... but I like metal drumming. It's like seeing someone like AdamsSara from Youtube playing a constant double bass to death growling. I am actually very polite, but if you knew me for real, you would think I am someone who would like cut school (which I don't). It would be funny though. It would go something like this: Me: *Walks into convenience store* Dude Behind the counter: Aren't you supposed to be in school? Me: Why yes, thank you for saying that. Now give me all the money in the register please. If you don't mind. I won't hurt you. Dude behind the counter: No Me: Thanks anyway, please don't call the cops on me. *Laughs* Am I weird?

What is this weird reamer?

So I found this in the shop the other day. It looks like a normal reamer but it's not round. Four flutes extend to a larger diameter while four extend to a shorter diameter. The shorter flutes are sharpened just like the outer ones so they were clearly designed to cut something, even though they appear to have no clearance with which to do so. The tool has a keyed taper meaning it was intended for use in a heavy machine. The dimple in the tip of the tool does not go through the tool body. Can anyone identify this weird tool? None of the professors or machinists I have shown it to have any idea what it is.

Weird Capacitor thing? Answered

I have this capacitor looking metal can, but when my dad was in Russia, the seller said it was not a capacitor, but something else. It has markings on it that say 5.5V and 1.0F. I put some Pics on as well. The seller said it was used in answering machines to save messages, sorta like a CR2032 battery in computers. I want to know if it can be used in a pocket torch, like a rechargeable capacitor, etc. Help!

Weird HDMI trouble

Hi! I'm having some weird issues with my HDMI connectivity... I have a SHARP tv (aquos, 52"). The PS3 and other stuff is working as intended when connected via HDMI to the TV. However, when I connect my computer to the TV the computer recognizes the connection, but the TV doesn't, or whatever the heck it might be. To try and solve the issue I just bought an HDMI switch, connected my digital box and PS3 to this, which works just fine, and tried the same with the computer. Nothing. The computer wont even recognize that connection, as it atleast did when directly connected to the TV. However, the real issue at hand is the first one, why the computer recognizes but won't send signals properly or otherwise why the TV wont accept the signals (but seeing as the HDMI switch doesn't acknowledge the connection to the computer, the computer should be the issue?). Im thinking it might have something to do with the computer? Anyone got a clue?

See quantum weirdness for yourself!

An article in ScienceWorld reports on a proposed experimental setup which would make quantum entanglement visible to the naked eye! Using stimulated emission (the same effect that causes lasing), a group led by Nicolas Gisin of the University of Geneva proposes to amplify one photon of an entangled pair to a level that is visible to the naked eye. Observers watching through polarizing filters would then be able to directly see the "spooky action at a distance" of quantum correlations.

Please Identify Weird Component.

The metal disk is a component, physically broken in an RCA f32450 tv. The blue capacitor was sent by sears as a replacement. Yeah, I don't think that's the right part, guys. The component was near the built in fuse, has very low resistance ~ 3 ohms from 1 face to the other, and used to have it's leads soldered directly to it's surface where the diagonal mark is. My theory is that it is designed to break if the tv is jarred. Sort of a mechanical impact sensor. Does anyone else know with any certainty?

Weird junk characters in Firefox?

So, I have this annoying problem with Firefox... As I browse the web, opening and closing tabs, I get an accumulation of (Japanese?) characters all over the tabs at the top of the screen. It starts with one or two, but soon builds up to obscure the tabs, so that I can't find the Xs to close tabs, or even switch between them (see the screenshot). The characters occur no matter what websites I do or do not visit. It eventually gets to the point where I have to close the software to get rid of the mess. The problem has persisted through uninstall/reinstall of the browser, and the only add-ons I have running are a dictionary and McAfee site advisor. Yes, I know I could just switch to Chrome, but FF is my favourite browser. Anybody know a cure?

Instructables in the Telegraph -- Weird and wonderful inventions

The Telegraph ran a great article featuring online DIY culture and Instructables. Weird and wonderful inventions by Chris StevensMeet the DIY enthusiasts using the internet in their fight against throwaway society. The internet has spawned a new breed of extreme DIY enthusiasts. They build jet engines in their garages using instructions downloaded from forums, and they upload videos of the explosive results. They weld together rollercoasters out of scrap materials and household items. They teach themselves taxidermy to build "The Mouse Mouse", a real mouse with electrical innards. Or, like 17-year-old Thiago Olson, who built a fusion reactor in his house, they're scouting for parts in their local B & Q. The online DIYers are rebelling against a consumer society that has convinced many of us that everything is bought, not made. "It's a reaction against a mass-produced culture," says Eric Wilhelm, founder of Instructables.com. "People want to express themselves and show their individuality - building something cool that you can't buy and showing how you did it is a great way to express yourself."While the traditional DIYer is overjoyed to have put up a set of shelves without losing a finger, the extreme online DIYer spends the weekend with an angle-grinder turning a supermarket trolley into an armchair, or building a Guitar Hero game controller from scratch. Online projects show you how to make your own USB charger, extend the battery life of your laptop, or use a Mont Blanc refill to transform a £1 pen."People are passionate about all sorts of things," says Wilhelm. "From the wacky, far-out jet engines and taxidermy to the everyday stuff like how to tie your shoes or manage washing your laundry most efficiently."The projects are uploaded by users, who offer each other step-by-step advice on everything from the sinister to the charming. The extreme DIYers dare each other to create increasingly elaborate projects, posting photos and videos of near-misses and successes. The internet is perfect for this kind of experimentation; it's a place where inquisitive geeks meet friends with power-tools. All these projects have gorgeous colour photos to go with them, and the strength of interest in these extreme-DIY sites has led communities to meet offline. This year, Makezine.com held a fair in the US attended by 45,000 "makers"."Besides the skill of building and the exchange of ideas, it's a lot of fun," says Phillip Torrone, senior editor of Make magazine. "We seem to be in an era of thinking more about the things we buy, make, consume and cherish. The result of that is people making things - it's more gratifying." Scandals over rip-offs, such as the recent study that showed ink-jet printer cartridges wilfully waste more than 50 per cent of the ink (tinyurl.com/2957jw), make Torrone's DIY ethos all the more appealing. If you're the sort of clumsy oaf that regularly snaps USB keys off in their sockets, these DIY sites also offer advice on repairing consumer electronics. Wilhem's favourite DIY project is the dachshund wheelchair (tinyurl.com/ytc6bb). The DIYer who made it explains: "Our dachshund hurt his back, so for rehab we made him swim a lot, and I built this chair until he could use his back legs again."Online DIYers have an enthusiasm for science and exploration, and many are simply reacting to the low-quality of mass-produced goods, especially consumer electronics. They object to our modern throw-away culture. The DIYers also upstage technology manufacturers by demonstrating easy ways to fix what would otherwise be thrown away. "It's really more about problem-solving with more people", says Torrone.More news articles about Instructables here.

AAA solar batteries acting weird? Answered

I recently got a bunch of solar garden lights intended for a different purpose of course ;) During the modding stage I made a simple wireless charger for one of the lights an it worked as intended. However, while testing the light and how long it works I got a bit confused. The battery states 300mAh (NiCd), which is fine for a single LED solar light and a small cell. The light uses between 6 and 10mA, depending on the current color. With my dumb calculations I would say a fully charged battery should last around 30 hours - 24 at least. But after 8 to 9 hours the light goes off and the battery is down to a low level. Being dirt cheap I tried the same again with a good 1000mA NiMh battery, which otherwise does a good job in other applications. The 1000mA battery lasted 3 days, which again is way short of the calculated target. At this stage I suspect the Joule thief used in the solar light is the culprit as my own circuits don't show this problem... Would it be worth to get the oscilloscope out to check the actual spikes produced by the circuit? And how would I go with properly calculating the consumption? Being a color changing LED (circuit inside the LED) does not make it much easier :(

A weird ringing sound from my computer?

Ever since I built my gaming computer, my HP monitor which has speakers in it makes a ringing sound. What is weird about it is that when my CPU is occupied for a second or two (Like opening Google Chrome), it stops and when it is done processing that it starts back up. It also stops when I lay my mouse over certain things or put a drop down list. It's a very high pitch sound that everyone I ask says they don't hear anything. However, I can hear it like one of those old chunky TVs that make a high pitch sound on start up. It's very distinct to me and it's annoying. I know it is my speakers making the sound because whenever I unplug them they stop making the sound. Any possibility? Motherboard malfunction? My speakers on plugged into the green port on the back of my computer. Thanks!

They have never been exposed to moisture other than that in the air. They have been in a heated dry place in a covered box. I opened them for the first time in two years today and found some 'erupting' with white stuff. I'm guessing crystals of some sort... or maybe a very strange mold. Has anyone else had this happen or know what causes it?

Intro and Step #1 on same page = weird?

I guess this isn't a bug, as it works as planned, but I do find it personally annoying that the Intro and Step 1 are on the same page, but there are separate thumbnails at the top for the respective sections. When you click on the step 1 thumbnail, it just jumps down. I like clicking through the thumbnails as a way to see the overview of the project, and I always have to skip that step #1 box. I would personally put the intro + materials on the first page, then the start of the procedure (Step 1) on the next etc. I don't consider the materials to be a "step". Maybe it's just my OCD acting up. Anyone else?

Weird image-notes bug -- framing offset

A user posted a Question about how to have the image notes box show a different image than what it outlined on the original picture. His question was inspired by one of the Lego iPod docks, which does indeed appear to have this effect on all of its image notes. The effect isn't actually to show a different image. Rather what appears to be happening is that when the image note is hovered over, a piece of the picture offset vertically (about 1.5 cm) below the box is displayed in place. It's almost as though the JavaScript that does the work has a positioning offset, for each of the image notes in this I'ble. Some differences in OS: Using Firefox 3.6.3, I see the effect with MacOSX 10.5.8, but NachoMahma does not see it with Windows XP.
