What is this?

Sorry, I didn't know whether to post in bugs or feedback, so I went with bugs. So I have two computers, and one of them is a netbook. The netbook has a problem where sometimes the internet will just sit there and load for hours, but then when you refresh the page, it goes real fast. So today I posted a super long answer to a question, and clicked on post, and it didn't post. This is a problem with the compute, not with instructables. So I was all like "NOOOO!!!!" because my 3 paragraph answer just got deleted, and I went all crazy clicking back and forth from the top "Answer this" button to the bottom "Answer this" button. After awhile I gave up. Then I saw this thing at the bottom of one of the comment boxes that said "hey, this is my error!". Picture below. So, what is this?

What does the universe look like?

I watch these magnificent programs about the universe, so wonderfully explained by Morgan Freeman.  I am puzzled with one question.  How can the science predict the size of our galaxy in somewhat vivid details?  So, here is my analogy.  With the space technology at hand, taking a picture of our own galaxy is the same as taking a picture of the Empire State building from one of its balconies.  Can someone please elaborate on this subject. Thank you.

What does your room look like?

Hey peeps, me again filling up the forums. I thought, before my room got messy again in about an hour, I'd video a walkthrough I had been wanting to do for a while of my room. I'll update the video with one that's more detailed. Sorry about the video, for some reason youtube doesn't have very good decoders for mov files, guess I gotta do it by hand before uploading.. Post your pictures or videos of your geek lair for the world to see! I'm just kinda noticing now that I missed a lot of details in the video, so an update may follow perhaps.Update: New vid, new stereo, new crt monitor, god help me with my engine!

Looking for the right computer

8 years ago, my dad bought me a computer. It was decent enough, and served me well through school. It did however break down a lot, and over the years my computer(s) have gone through numerous iterations and fixes in an attempt to keep them working. With all the Frankensteining going on, very little (if any) of my original computer is left. These days even wiping the hard disks doesn't fix all the problems. So I find myself in the market for a new machine with very little contemporary knowledge of what to get. And here's where you come in: what does Instructables recommend (specific pieces of equipment if possible) in terms of hardware and computer specs? Usage: I'm a graphic artist focused more on the 2-D side of things; I need enough power and memory to work in large sizes( 40 MB multi-layer images with dimensions well over 10,000 x 10,000 pixels are not that uncommon, and working with a few of these at once will sometimes be necessary) and remain stable 24/7. The computer needs to be able to multitask, at the very least running windows explorer, firefox (tab addict), fireworks, a basic text editor, and a media player simultaneously.  It has to have at least a couple hundred gigs of space, and be able to display and edit large video files as well. I've got a couple thousand dollars handy, and can save for more if necessary; I just need a good machine that'll perform to expectations and remain error-free for as long as possible. So, Instructables, any suggestions?

What is this??? Answered

I found this in a box of misc. wires yesterday at a thrift store looks like a toy for a computer game maybe. It has a speaker up top and an adjustable microphone at the bottom. I know that speaker and microphone are self explanatory, but I was curious to know what exactly it may have been used with. It has a place in the middle to put in three AA batteries and it has a removable clip to attach it to something. When I put in the batteries it appeared to work or the little red light indicator  came on and the speaker was on with a real low fuzz sound. I have not plugged it into anything yet , I wanted some input first.Thank you in advance to anyone with help.

What to do with an old computer?

So I am looking for something to do with this old computer, now that I have a new one. It's ~9 years old. 800mhz processor with 384mb ram SiS760 integrated card (I've never heard of it either) I would be interested in making an arcade cabinet, but my own games don't run fast enough on it, and I couldn't get MAME to run (graphics error - surprise surprise). Here's what I was thinking of: -Linux, programming playground -Use it to learn to write a custom operating system (I know this is tough, but I'd love to try) -Downloading stuff -Backup (only 100gb hard drive) I'm not thrilled with any of those options. Suggestions? Note: I know there was a dead computer contest, but I'm not looking for stuff like that. It's still very much useful, and I'm not ready to smash it.

New computer freezing problem

So I just built myself a new computer with the following specs gigabyte motherboard model: GA-MA770T-UD3P (rev. 1.0) phenom 2 tri core processor 4gb ddr3 mushkin ram radeon 4670 tp link wireless card 2 LCD's hooked up to the 4670 Windows 7 64-bit/ XP 64-bit (not at the same time) +tons of cooling so nothing is over heating I installed windows 7 and it kept freezing up every once in a while and I tried just about everything to fix it. Updating bios, cleaning the registry, making sure all the drivers are up to date, all sorts of things. So I thought it was Windows 7 giving me the problem. I uninstall windows 7 and installed windows xp. I loaded up everything got the drivers up to date and after a couple of hours it froze up. Then I rebooted and bam another freeze 3 minutes into being on the computer. And again the next time 15 minutes into being on the computer. Now Im not sure if the freezing is happening on windows 7 for the same reason as on Windows xp and it is driving me crazy not being able to use my new computer Any ideas on what I can do to fix the problem? Thanks for any help. Got some more details. 1) I noticed when I move a window around I my cp usage spikes from 1% to close to 30%. Not sure if this is normal but with tri core 2.8ghz doesnt seem like this is good. 2) When I have 3+ windows open and I drag them over each other it leaves a trail or shadow of its edge so it looks like I am dragging many windows. Sometimes this shadow is just white. 3) Also when I try to install a game the computer will always freeze before it finishes and most of the time right at the beginning. 4) When I press the button to force it to go off and then turn it back on it often just comes up with a black screen and I have to repeat. it always turns on the second time. How can I tell if it is my hardware? Just did a video stress test and benchmark. Everything was normal. Ran "cpu stability test 6.0". Watched it for 20 minutes then I left the computer and came back to see it frozen in screen saver. Speedfan temps- Temp 1- 26c temp2- 25c HD0- 26C core- 15c It is pretty cold in my room. I also found something that makes it freeze every single time I have done it so far. When trying to install world of warcraft as soon as I click agree in the install setup it freezes. 6 out of 6 times. My power supply is 500w "stable power"

What are the specs on this ancient RAM?

I would like to replace the two 64 MB modules in an ancient computer with two 256MB modules. Unfortunately, Linux was unable to report a manufacturer or model for the motherboard (only that it has a 950Mhz Duron and mostly SiS onboard components.) Even that report is suspect, as it said there are four memory slots when in fact there are two. So, take a look at this photo of three sticks of memory which worked successfully in the machine. What exactly are their specifications? Then, look at the specifications in this Ebay ad.  Is it fully compatible (assuming the computer can handle 512MB)? Update: Apparently the seller who I originally linked to is a scammer. I'll reference a more legit looking Ebay seller instead.

Media computer

Hello all.  I have been having a really fun time going through the forums lately.  I started in the tech section or whatever it is called.  I have no idea what page I am on but I know I am looking at posts that are about 3 years old.  Not looking at every single post of course but about 5-7 posts per page.  But that is all besides the point, let me get to my question. The other day just because I happened to have an s-video cable around I hooked one of our laptops to the TV.  I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the image on the TV.  So I have decided to make an audio cable for it and start to use the computer on the TV for some stuff.  Money is tight around here (that is why I am making the audio cable and not buying one) and we do not have cable TV.  All we have is a converter box and ever since a really bad storm about 1 1/2 months ago we barely get any channels.  I am still trying to get management of my building to look at the antenna on the roof.  But after I saw what kind of quality the laptop had on the TV we are starting to look at getting netflix.  Figure it is only $7.99 per month and you get your first month free so I think it is worth checking out.  Since it looks like we will be using a computer with the TV quite often I have decided to make a media computer out of one of the towers sitting around here.  I am not worried about the power of the computer since the tower I have in mind is not all that old.  But I am trying to decide what OS to put on it.  I know there is a "Windows media" edition but I do not know much about it other then I think it is getting quite old.  I am leaning towards putting either XP or Windows 7 on it since I have those disks.  But I thought I would ask on here for peoples input on the matter.  I plan on networking the computer to my windows 7 desktop in order to access my 1tb hard drive for stuff I download.  My wife will be using this computer too so that is part of the reason I am leaning towards windows xp or 7 so she will not feel lost in some OS she does not know.  So now you have all the details.  Should I just go with XP or 7, or is there something else I should look at?

Building a Computer

So, in continuing my series of stupid newbie computer questions, I present: Building Your Own Computer!-The Computer-As you've heard, I first had a computer that messed up, then I took it to the computer dudes, and they said it was completely FUBAR, then I asked how I should salvage it. Now, after laying my eyes on the beautiful Linux-running $72 Computer, I said to myself that I should make one...-What I Have-I stripped my computer tonight, and I came up with a CD drive (doesn't burn, just reads), Floppy drive, hard drive, power supply (how the heck do I understand all those wires?), nice looking heatsink with matching fan, and various other parts from the Windows 98 computer. -The Problems--I checked the links provided at the link above, and the prices had either raised, the item is out of stock, or the item had vanished completely...-I would like to buy a minimum of parts because I am in debt with my parents, and being 13, I don't have a job to pay them off.-I would like to run Linux, as it is one of the coolest things I've found recently. -I do know that the link above is thumb-drive booted, and I would like to avoid that, but no biggie if I can't.-I also don't know that much about computers, so I want to keep the computer sweet and simple. -The components that I salvaged might not work with the new components (I.E. Motherboard)-Maybe more.-Pluses--It will be cheap.-Case mods should be easy.-Mistakes dont cost much.-Linux is free.-Linux looks very nice.-It shouldn't need much RAM to run (Am I correct here?), so I can run more complex programs without it costing me.-I have extra parts from the old Win98 computer that died.-Probably more, but this is all I got right now...First postSecond postI am saying this right now- I suck at understanding computers, and if possible, comment to me like you would your 93 year old grandpa.

are real guns looking to much like toys?

Guns are starting to look like toys. yes, a pink pistol is cool, until some kid thinks its not real and starts pointing it at there friends and laughing. i mean, what is the point of making a real pistol look like a toy? that does not teach kids anything. i mean, what kid is going to think that some pink thing can kill him? that green glock is real! it shoots real bullets and everything. police are not even able to tell the difference from a fake gun and a real gun! how are police supposed to know if "that kid" running down the street has a real gun or not? yes, i know that the hello kitty gun is cool, but what is some kid that gets a hold of that going to think? there going to thing that its just some toy and accidentally shoot some one. i might make guns out of knex, but i know that i will not kill anyone with them. painting a gun like a toy just goes against common sense, we used to be concerned about toys looking like real guns, now guns look like toys.

Other than dust and dirt, it looks like the only damaged part. Does anyone know what it is? Does anyone know what a modern equivalent would be?

Does the Swiss Room Box inspire you? Without violating international patent laws, how about making something similar? Answered

Besides the price (over $8K, plus overseas shipping) it seems to take up an awful lot of space, and has some features like the uncomfortable looking chairs I wouldn't use.  But the idea of something that coud fit in a trunk of a car or the back of a minivan that could be used for camping is really intriguing!  Alas, I don't have the engineering skills to design what I'm imagining, but I have to believe there's someone who could use good ol' Yankee ingenuity and probably improve on the Swiss design.  If you Google it, there's a video that shows how theirs works.  Thanks for reading my question.  Suzanne

What is this type of fastening called and what does it fasten to? Answered

This belonged to my grandmother (the clasp looks post 1930). I assume there would have been some kind of hinged cover over the watch face  (a hinge and catch  are circled). I don't know what the double fanged clip like  thing on the back is called or what it is for.  The double 'fangs' look somewhat like an upholstery pin.  Given that the front is a watch, and one needs to see a watch for it to be useful.... what would this be stuck into or clipped onto?   Anyone familiar with this style?

Fading Led (leds) inside computer looking like heart beat.

Hi! First of all I want to apologize my English but its not my mothers language. So what I would like to do is add warm white led (leds) into my computer what would fade out and fade in like really slow pulse. How this could be done. I can do basic soldering and schematics but the easier the schematic is the better :) And as cheap as possible because I'm not that rich at the moment. I have googled this a bit but found so many different versions and also they all faded so fast and I want my led (leds) to fade slowly. And because the idea is to but them to my computer this project would be using either 5 or 12 volt source. Thanks for all who can help me! Make

Looking for a type of switch

Hi People of Instructables! I hope I am posting in the right place. I am looking for a switch that when you walk pass a point it shuts off and when you walk the other way past that point goes back on.   For example... I have a flash-light in my hand, when I walk through a doorway into a house the light turns off.  I go through the doorway the other way (to the outside) the light turns on. Conditions: It has to be able to do this through cloth as the flashlight could be in my pocket. It can only work when you walk through the doorway but not when standing near the doorway Does anything like this exist?  if yes what is it called? I have been searching the 'net and not been successful as I don't have a clue what I am looking for. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading my post! TheLastPrincess
