Is there any way to make a rotating wifi antenna and it stops when it hits a strong signal?

Hello All, Im puzzled by a simple wifi aerial, i have an old pci wifi card which is slow but works perfectly fine, the only downfall is the range so i un-soldered the original antenna and soldered on some copper wire (approx 2mm thick copper) and on the end of this attached a connector and that attached to a new antenna, but that didnt work, The signal was weaker, i know one option is to go and buy a new better wifi card but i wanted to dabble with creating a stronger wifi aerial, (in my head this would work but in practical it didn't). Why And what did i do wrong?

Alright, I have this friend of mine who is really into pranks, and loves messing with my computer and the computers of his college roommates, so I'm trying to come up with a way to jam his WiFi to get back at him. I'm not planning on doing anything illegal with it, just trying to mess with him and get him back for all of his shenanigans. Haha To be a bit of help, I have heard/read on google that it is possible to jam a WiFi signal (which usually runs at 2.4 GHz) with a modified cordless phone, also running at 2.4 GHz. Any ideas? Thanks!

I PURCHASED MY MOTHER, who lives 200 ft from me, a DSL subscription to share. The phone company innstalles a WESTELL 327w router and I have a sony Vaio VGN-NW310F laptop. Even though we had no clear line of sight, I still occaisionallyy got one and RARELY 2 bars. The 1st thing I did was bought a Hawking HWUN3 wifi booster which plugs right into my USB. Great idea in theory, but it made no difference and was possibly even worse. Plus, Hawkings Customer service is absolutely heinous, pitiful, and incompetant. So I returned it. Funny...when i bought, it took 5 minutes for them to extract the money from my account, but 6 weeks to return it..but I digress. I then upgraded the antenna on her router with a LINKSYS HGA7S 7dba antenna which helps a little, which is to say I get 1 or 2 bars more relliably. I can get email but the signal is still too iffy to do much else. question is this: I am willing to mount something outside and run a USB cable inside, or is there something INSIDE that will pick up/amplify or carry the signal to the laptop - either by means of a USB cable or not? Also, is there software required? I am a disabled vet and this laptop is one of the few things I have, so I need help! I'd prefer responses to my email, firstname.lastname@example.org (and that's a zero after the 'b', not the letter 'o'. what can I do to get a stronger AND more reliable signal? As Ferris Bueller's teacher Ben Stein would say..."Anyone?.....Anyone?....." What's my best option here, folks? Also, if there is a better place on this or any other site to post this, lemme know!!! Whenever I turn my dell vostro 1500 on, sometimes the wifi works and sometimes not. At the startup, the wifi light turns on. Even if it isn't connected to anything. I have checked the wifi capability switch on the side and the 'diagnose and repair' is useless. I am using windows vista. Thanks for any solutions.

Hey All! I'm a frustrated guy when it comes to Wifi. I can never get the hang of where to position my notebook in the room to get a decent signal. The worst of all is that the best wifi spot in the house is subject to change all the time. Maybe it's the microwave being on, someone on the cordless phone, etc. I'd like to make the Roomba use a gradient descent algorithm to find the best place in the area to position my laptop, or any other 802.11a/b/g/n enabled device. That way, I can let the Roomba spin around a room for a minute to show me where to best sit down. I believe this capability of Roomba will be both easy to implement, and highly useful. In fact, by being able to export a map of the local wifi signal in an area, college/workplace admins would better find out where to position wireless access point and repeaters. WarRoomba-ing, anyone? Please use your powers for good and not for evil ; )s In my deign, I could see a whole host of like minded applications - best radio/TV signal, bluetooth, best WiMax, Satellite, best...you name it. Right now I am focused on WiFi, but I am looking into feasible TV/radio methods, too, since my TV reception is AWFUL! (Worse than Wifi, but not used as heavily). This will be my first Instructable, and I am anxious to get started!

Hello- I'm new to your site. I do have questions that I believe many of you smart folks can answer. I have an Acer CB5-311 Chromebook which, against all expectations, I dearly love. One thing I don't love is the games certain wifi companies like to play in re to access. For example, my apt. complex has free wifi access. Periodically, the wifi goes "down" just after an unsolicited advert pops up (despite adblocker) asking if I had interrupted service, and wouldn't I rather buy a service contract with x.....(fill-in the blanks) for such and such price. Of course, it is the same wifi our apt. complex purchased (under a different name). So...is there a hack you know of that can help me circumvent this?

Hi everyone, i looked at the instructable of the wokfi antenna and the site of where it all started on that topic ( http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/ ).i found a free wifi access in my area, i got 1 pc (ethernet card+ usb wifi dongle), one laptop (wifi), a nintendo wii (wifi) and an old pc (233mhz, ethernet card) also a spare ethernet pci card and a pcmcia wifi not in the laptop, laying around .here's what i would like to do to have internet for free:- get the signal from the free wifi access point to the 233 mhz pc- use that pc as a firewall- then send the signal thru the ethernet cable and with another wifi (the pcmcia in the pc with a pcmcia to pci adapter or another usb wifi dongle, witch ever is cheaper) because my laptop can't reach the free wifi access point, it's to far..i'm looking for help on this please, i'll do an instructable with it because i think it could also be usefull to other. that whole idea of free wifi to anyone could be used here. because, let's say in a block, dorm, appartment a far away wifi connection could be shared localy. i've been digging for an intense 2 days now but my knowledge about networks and english (my first language is french) aren't that good so if anybody got an idea where to start looking it would be very appreciated.

I'm looking for a board (for the moment a development board would be the best solution as I am prototyping) with NFC and WiFi integrated. I saw that Arduino should launch one with NFC, Wifi and Bluetooth, the board is called Primo. I can't find anything else and Arduino can't announced a date for the launch. For now I'm working with a NFC reader and the Arduino WiFi Board both mounted on a separate Arduino Uno because the two boards are incompatible. Any idea ? Thanks Alizée

Would it be possible to make a WiFi repeater with the equipment on this Instructable: https://www.instructables.com/id/LINUX-LEECH/ withe the addition of Arduino and a small LCD? It would be really awesome and may even lead onto cheap mesh networking! :D Thanks for any help! :)

There are lots of rc cars out there, with wifi linking capabilities, but I was wondering whether you could be in one house connected to wifi, and controlling a chassis/rc car in another house without using Arduino. (I'm really bad at electronics). The reason being, I want to build a Mobile Virtual Presence Device with a fairly large stable chassis that can be controlled from somewhere else. If you can name a way to do this, I would appreciate it. Thanks! -Finzaz

Is it possible to connect an Arduino Ethernet Shield R3 (official) to a wifi router then connect to a different router though the first router? I want to do this so I can make a robot that when it finds a known network it connects to it then dumps the data from the sd to an online server. Can anyone help me with this? I have an Arduino Uno R3 (official) and an Arduino Mega 2568 (clone).

I'm pretty new to the WiFi dish stuff and picked it up pretty quickly. What I wanted to know is if anyone has thought of modding an umbrella slightly to use as a dish and what might be involved. I thought of this when watching The Matrix Revolutions(again)when a dish thing comes out of one of the Sentinels.

You need a separate grouping for this module under Technology This is a Microprocessor running at 80Mhz to 160 Mhz with 512 kB to 4 Mb of program memory It costs $3 and is programmed with various languages compiled to machine hex and uploaded by a variety of programs to run entirely on its own with a 3.3Volt power supply . It connects to your modem , acts as a modem , serves web pages and sends to web pages and a whole lot of other stuff I have not used yet See here in the wiki for more detail http://www.esp8266.com/wiki/doku.php

Hi everyone, I'm not a native english speaker so sorry for my language's level. I'm new on the forum. Watching amazing DIY projects on Instructable make me want to do same things. I have a old 5.1 audio kit : http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z-5450-Digital-Speaker-970181-0403/dp/B000AM6QHO One of a rear wireless satelite is broken. I tried to fix it but without result. So my new idea is to use this stuff to make something like Sonos Audio products. 5 independant wifi speakers connected to a wifi network to stream music, and most important to sync sound of a movie streamed on TV. In an other project, i want to create my personnal NAS / Media Center with Plex. In fact i want to create a system, to stream video and sound wirelessly from a Data Server. Is it possible ? My knowledge is not very large so i need your help to improve my skills. I saw this product but maybe i can find a other solution, more easy to build and cheapest. http://fr.aliexpress.com/item/Wireless-Wifi-Audio-Receiver-music-streaming-receiver-Supports-iOS-Android-Airmusic-DLNA-AirPlay-Qplay-Music-Radio/1993464174.html I want to create something easy to connect with a only centralized system/app. Do you think it's possible ? Does anyone know a system or how to construct an RFID / WIFI based locator system? I would think that an old dual antenna wireless G router could be used in combination with an RFID tag. So when the tag is moved to a new location within range of the router the location will be saved or displayed on the computer screen. I thought that having a system like this would be great for keys, animals, phones, babies, pills, etc. Here is one example application: Where are my keys? - open the web browser and retrieve the approximate location where the keys were last moved. They are in between the sofa cushions.

Does anybody know of a WiFi Adapter that can work on a Windows XP PC and work with a Dual band WiFi router? (my router is NetGear, if that's important) and that is not $30 or more? I don't care if its used, as long as it works and wont die any time soon (obviously) I've been looking on amazon, I've found a few decent ones and cheap but to be honest... i don't know which to get, which is why I'm asking here to be 100% sure or.. close enough to 100%

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew of a project out there for boosting a WiFi signal. I don't mean a parabola on the antenna of the router, I mean something that sits in another room, receives the signal, then boosts it and sends it out again. Not sure how feasible this is, but I figured it was worth asking. Also, I'm up for a bit of a soldering challenge :)

Hi, I have a remote for my fireplace. It uses a RF of 303.87 mhz. I was trying to think of a way to build something that could recieve a message over wifi that would then trigger the 'buttons' on the remote. I found some RF receiver/transmitters but everything is for 315 or 430 mhz. Will those work for 303.87? Or was this remote designed to not be easily cloned?

I'm not very adept with computers, explaining any incorrect use of terminology. My computer has a built-in wireless card, and I'm in range of two WiFi signals- Starbucks and McDonalds. Usually each one tops at around 2 bars and 20ps. How can I get better reception without running to Mcdonalds or Starbucks? I saw the strainer-on USB instructable, but that was not as practical as I had hoped. Is there some USB antennae type thing?

The call control protocol of the WF01 is based on SIP V2 (Session Initiation Protocol version 2, RFC 3261) open standard, which is interoperable with major SIP-based call servers, IP-PBXs, and other standard SIP-based client devices. The WF01_V2 is compliant with the IEEE 802.11b standard and interoperates with any existing 802.11b or 802.11g wireless AP and gateway. It may be used as a cordless handset for residential users or for business users in an office environment. The small form factor of the handset is easy to transport and allows users to place VoIP phone calls in public 802.11-based environment.

Recently after replacing the router in the house, my main ubuntu machine wifi has become extremely slow and unreliable. The culprit appears to be the speed at which the connection get set at 15mb/s or 1mb/s. The Belkin N300 USB WiFi card is capable of 150mb/s, but for some reason it only operates at really nice blazing speeds for a few seconds to minutes after connecting, showing speeds up to 10Gbit/sec transient when first connecting, and the average internet speeds of ~5-10mb/s, but then instantly dropping down into the k bit/s range in the system monitor. * A wired connection is not an option * I have tried "sudo iwconfig wlan1 rate 150" and "sudo iwconfig wlan1 bit 150" Seems to do nothing. * I have also tried "sudo iw wlan1 set bitrates legacy-2.4 9" This seems to change the connection bitrate, but has no permanent effects, and absolutely no noticeable effects on the actual transfer speeds. * I have tried installing device drivers using windows drivers on the disc, and using "windows wireless drivers" application in linux, though it seemed to have no effect. (I don't think ubuntu is even using those drivers!) At this point I am at a complete loss as to what the problem is. I know that this wireless chip works fine in windows. Any ideas, I am not an expert at this stuff.

Hello, I'm wondering if it'd be possible to control one of those wifi controlled helicopters such as the Wi Fli (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRLE1EedwN8) with a wifi router, rather than a wifi enabled device such as the iPad. I'm thinking the helicopter could instead be controlled by a computer connected to the same router. Let me know if you have any information or knowledge in the subject! Thanks, Digimas

Will my netbook automatically 'deal' with both built-in and exernal WifFi adapters and use the one with best antenna reach? If the above is a no go because my S10 has internal WiFI is there any way to extend antenna reach for the S10's built-in wireless adapter?

Ok so basicly at my school they have two different WIFI spots one is near the classrooms that I work in and is WEP protected and only for teachers and the other one is in another building and is not WEP protected and I can only get that signal if I am in that building. So what I want to do is make my own WIFI antenna so that I can get the unprotected signal while in my classroom. I want to make a USB wifi antenna pretty much.

I am working on adding a helical antenna to a cheap USB WiFi adapter. My question is where do I connect the antenna to existing circuit. I've attached a closeup picture with three likely points. My three main questions are: 1) Where to connect the external antenna 2) Do I disconnect the rest of the onboard antenna (my gut says yes) or just add in the new 3) What impedance will the external antenna need to match? I assume the components between points C&B; and B&A; are for some kind of impedance matching.
