How do I quote formatting characters?

If I want text in an instructable to include characters that normally cause wiki formating magic to happen, how do I quote them ? For instance, if I want to enclose some text in square brackets:[my text](that was done with "preformatted" text. which changes the font and does a "block" at a time. Not what I want!)(couldn't find this in other pages about wiki formatting, either.)

Math wiki formatting on instructables

Alright Instructables, I fold. It is with a sense of shame that I must ask: Does Instructables have a method (be a clandestine feature or a workaround) to allow a user to enter formatted math text (ex. summation signs, integrals, greek letters even)? In particular, I was trying to get latex to work (I thought I had seen another user do so once) on the wiki, but thus far my efforts have proved fruitless. Anyone out there know a way to do this?

[HELP] Teardown wiki, preferably associated with instructables?

Looking for a resource. I do a lot of teardowns of broken equipment for my projects. Things like Instructables is a great resource for me but I thought there could be something better... I would just like to know if it maybe already exists out there. My only problem with the instructables; * Author edited; if an author does not know what something is in the teardown, it's a long process to have a reader identify it, and then the author themselves has to edit the instructable. * No examples of how the item may be used by the DIYer. It would be nice if pages could be immediately edited linking to related projects, or a faq on a particular part Anyone know of a resource wiki like that? If not, then I'll start the ball rolling with one, but I just don't want to go around doubling some work...

Is Wikipidea a Bad Source To Use at School

Im a high schooler and my library teacher gave me a disiplinary referal for using wikipidea as a source for a research project, and for refusing to never use wikipidea in school. He gave me a one hour speach on how anyone can edit wikipidea and its all based on the personal belifs of people. So i guess my question is should you use wikipidea for fact's.

Make:Project

Has anyone else checked out MAKE:Project?   It looks like a wiki version of Instructables.  Admittedly I'm not a huge fan of the wiki model, but I was wondering what others thoughts were on the site. Personally I'll stick here, but it will be interesting to see where the traffic goes in the future. Hmm, bet the K'nexers' would love the wiki part though.

Wikitag Anyone?

Wikitag is a good game to play when you are bored and have some free time, rather it be at home, school, or the library. For those of you who never heard of Wikitag, here are the simple rules. Go to Wikipedia, and press the random button Click a link on the page, thus leading to a different page. The link must redirect you to another article on Wikipedia, not another website. Keep on clicking links until you arrive to your desired Article. To make the game more interesting, I like to start on one article in an attempt to go to another article that is completely different. (For example, Computer to Water.) So, is anyone interesting, because if enough people were, I am planning to start up a contest of Wikitag. Thanks.

Throat Problems - Scope Results - cause? - Diagnosis

Some of you have probably seen my other 2 OLD forum topics, but if you haven't, I will explain it to you here. I have been having BAD throat problems for a few months now. Since I was about 9 I had food getting stuck in my throat. So one day, I was eating lunch, and food got stuck, slid down my throat and into my wind pipe. I started choking and couldn't breath. After that dramatic incident, I noticed a new symptom. I physically could not swallow. And on top of that I had an old symptom: heartburn. So I go to a doctor. He says I would have to get a scope.        So THIS is where the update begins. It was early September. I go in to get a scope. I wake up with the memory spam of a goldfish. So my family and I wait a while to go to the doctor for the results. So I go to my appointment where my doctor explains what is going on.                   ALL THE WAY DOWN my throat I have ulcers. Thus, around my ulcers they swell up, causing the difficulty swallowing         There are these things that MOST (not all) people have called esophills. I cannot find any info on these things so I will explain them to you instead of a link. These "esophills" are basically cells in your throat that react to allergies. They could swell up, itch, burn, etc. Well, mine swell up. The average person has about 5. I have 21.                      After explaining these things, my doctor says I have Eosinophilic Esophogitis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eosinophilic_esophagitis) and says I have to get an allergy test.          Pardon my french in this paragraph....I go to see an allergist. He says to wait in the room for a few minutes until this hot girl comes in. She takes these blue pointy things and pricks me with them as liquid comes out. So she walks away, and we wait. 2 of the pricks start itching like hell. The doctor comes in, and says those two pricks are samples of corn and apples. Apples? No biggy. Corn? Damn...........why is that bad? Things that have corn that I was banned from: Soda, chips, pretzels, cereal, cereal bars, bread, and hell of a lot of other things.         So I don't eat ANYTHING with corn for about a week until the blood test results come in. About a week after the allergist appointment, he calls and says corn and apples came out negative. So I could go back to eating things with corn.        Tomorrow (10/4) I have to go get ANOTHER allergy test by taping food to my back. Hungary? Just rip the food off my back. Thanks for reading! C'ya will I go cry in a corner /sarcasm

homemade signal booster? Answered

I was trying to figure out how to boast my signal coverage in my area, and a got an idea: to use a UHF amplifier, to pick up the towers signal and rebroadcast it. of coarse since things like WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular 2G/3G/4G networks use two way radio, the signal can go back to the reviving end of the UHF amp, and get broadcasting to hit whatever tower. my phone should better recognize the tower, as if i just magically made a tower 2 feet away. however this might also amplify stay noise. if this idea doesn't work, why not? i think i am going to need at least a 20dB increase in power, but as of now i  need to do more research. but if i can buy a product that does a similar thing for less than $40, i would. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_zone_(cell_phone)#Dead_zones  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repeater http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_spectrum (cellphones use UHF spectrum) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_booster

Using these ideas as a starting point:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icy_Ballhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einstein_refrigeratorhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas-absorption_refrigerator"Another variant uses air, water, and a salt solution. Warm air is passed through a sprayed solution of salt water. The spray absorbs humidity from the air. The air is then passed through an evaporative cooler. Humidity is removed from the cooled air with another spray of salt solution. The salt solution is regenerated by heating it under low pressure, causing water to evaporate. The water evaporated from the salt solution is recondensed, and rerouted back to the evaporative cooler."Directions on how to make an icy ball. Slashdot-Google has taken the wraps off Knol, its expert-written challenger to Wikipedia. Wired has an in-depth look. Knol's distinctions from Wikipedia are that authors are identified by their real names (and verified), and that they can share in ad revenue if they choose to. The service initially features a lot of medical articles, which is interesting considering that Medipedia also launched today. This medical wiki is backed by Harvard's and Stanford's medical schools.

Easter eggs in Google and other things

I came along some easter eggs for Google that you simply type into the search. Examples are: do a barrel roll tilt what is the answer to everything More easter can be found in the Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Google_hoaxes_and_easter_eggs For example, today, April 1, you can get a Pacman View in the street view of Google maps. Pacman uses the roads for the game :) But I guess I found one egg that is nowhere listed so far: Tpye into the Google search: currency us au $ And check the quick result, it will tell you something about 1 Australian dollar microsecond au US$ = 114 210.494 m s U.S. dollars² Not sure if it is a bug because of a confusion with the µ sign but I am sure there must be problem when I try to pay in microseconds.... Anyway check the Wiki page for more great Easter eggs on Google. Post the best eggs you find elsewhere!
