Architects and designers Chetwoods have proposed building a wind dam. A giant sail would funnel air flowing through a canyon into a wind turbine to generate electricity. The pictures look unreal, even for CAD models, but the idea is pretty cool. More here at Inhabitat and Ecotality Life.

Has anyone had experience in using magnets to help propel a horizontal wind mill or vertical wind turbine .what I mean is putting them in a circular series where the north propel against the north creating , forcing or helping the windmill to move in a circular motion?

Someone please help me.. My hands are getting so tired from doing this!! Ok, My first attempt was simple, Put cardboard on sides of pen, hot glue it down, wind coil. Works great for 18 22 gauge. Got some new 14 gauge wire, well, its A LOT harder than I expected :( What can I do to make winding 40 ft of 14 gauge wire fast and easy? Is there any way I can get it on a power drill or at least something that will make turning it easy? After 2 neat layers on my pen and a lot of tight holding, the 3rd layer started pushing the lower layers away, making the coil get messy :(

Hello Guys, I am working on a small project that involves wind energy, I am basically looking for a generator, preferably DC and as small as possible, my goal is to generate at least 17V and between 1.5 and 2A. Does anyone know where I can find something like this? Thank you Alejandro Moncada

Once again, I come to you for help. I recently became interested in some kind of 555 device metal detector. The schematic calls for a 10mh inductor. However, my local Ripoffshack doesn't carry inductors, and instead I decided I could make my own. It's just a coil of wire right? Right, so I have some formulas to find inductance given things like length and width, and I wondered if there's anything I need to be aware of. Does a ferrite core increase inductance? Where can I get a ferrite core? Do I need one? Is there a sweet spot for inductors? Thanks, Mr. Merino

I am asking these questions on behalf of another member who has English as a second language. He is building a vertical axis wind turbine (savonius style, I think). The mechanicals don't worry him, it's the generator and the windings. He wants to arrange six coils and six magnets. The magnets are going to rotate with the turbine. He has made the coils himself - each is wound clockwise, with 100 turns of wire. He assumes (and I agree) that the magnets should be separated by 60° of the circle, alternating which pole faces the coils (S-N-S-N-S-N) and the coils should also be separated by 60°. He would like to produce 12V DC, to be fed into a battery. What is the best, or most appropriate way to connect everything to achieve his goal? Links to sites that he can examine (and/or translate) at leisure would be nice. Or sites in Turkish. (I suspect that Picoturbine documentation would help, but it's in long English. Still, I've added it to the topic in case it is of help.)

I live in a rural area and we have two blue Harvestor grain silos. One has a 25 foot diameter and is 90 feet tall and the other is 4 feet from it with a 20 foot diameter and is 70 feet tall. I was wondering if it would be possible to mount a wind turbine on top of the taller one. I don't know much about turbulence though, if there would be too much? Or how high it would have to be off to clear the turbulence? This is my first try at it, I was going to try a treadmill motor, something small

I am looking for tips on creating a small windmill to charge a twelve volt battery. what is the best type of motor to use? Does anyone know how to make a charging circuit, so that even when the winds are low, it can charge the battery? What is the best type of battery? Are there any other questions i should be asking about wind power, and what are the answers to them?

Okay, so I'm making a small Wind Turbine to charge a couple of Rechargeable AAA batteries. But my problem is that the motor I'm using only generates voltage when moving clockwise and one of the fin designs I'm using spins it counterclockwise... So I tried a VAWT designs and it spins it clockwise but not very fast... I'll post pictures so you can see the designs. Thanks!!

I had this idea a while ago. There's a nylon strap strung between two trees. It's let's say 2 cm wide and 5 meters long. A strong wind is blowing across it so that the strap is resonating, displacing through, say, 20 cm at 10 Hz. What is the maximum power involved? If you had one or more wire coils running the length generating current, what kind of efficiency over all could you expect? I'm thinking of this as an ultra cheap and easy means of wind generation.

This started as a blog post on Make http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/05/parallelized_wind_power.htmlIt was suggested to head over to instructables and get some stuff going here and it seemed a good idea. Also, in the meantime I found (of course) a bunch of cool wind projects here (about 20). I really like the vertical Savonius turbines. I wonder if those could be stacked with a similar effect?I've been wanting to do a wind power project for a while, and it seems like a good one to work on with others. Here's a brainstorm to kick things off. Please add to it or suggest alternatives problems etc.- total parts cost < $200- leverage off the shelf parts as much as possible. - little or no machining.- over 100 watts, (ideally 300-500) (this could be totally unrealistic with a $200 price, not sure yet)- usable in small yards, urban roof topsThe guys who made the original did some research for a grant and the paper is available here: http://www.speakerfactory.net/TURBINES/GRANTS/Selsam%20EISG%2002-18%20Final.docAlright. Hopefully this is enough to kick off some discussion and gather up interested parties. I think the first step will be to tack down goals and solidify a general approach. Ideally in the end, we can come up with a good parts list from a minimal number of sources, and an instruction set that's relatively easy. A group might also leverage some purchase power by getting some of these parts in bulk (ie. a whole bunch of airplane props). Tim

I am in Kenya and being of a technical persuasion have been asked to fix this geriatric wind turbine. It is an electromagnet (as apposed to permanent magnet) based generator that my friend bought from the Italian scouts. I cannot for the life of me get anything more than about 3V from it. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before and if so have any idea where on earth I might be able to find out a little more about who made it or how I might be able to fix it. I have tried everything I can and still no cigars. Any help much appreciated. I am here setting up this organisation if anyone is interested access(hyphen)wind(dot)com

I eveyone I am new to the whole electronic scene, i have a bit of kwowlage, but not as much as i need. I need a bit of help pls I am trying to build my own 12v to 230v dc to ac inverter to connect my flat to it. I need about a 5KVA inverter Can anyone pls give me some details on winding the transformer for it. I need to know how many windings on each coil and the size of wire i need for the windings, and any other details that u can spair for my project. Thank you in advace for your help.

When I read up on the coils used in power generation, I found that the wire used is a type of magnet copper wire, and I bought 1600 feet of it on ebay. My only problem now is winding the coil. I figure I can do something like wrap it a few hundred times around a pole thats slightly larger than the rare earth disc magnets I got. Anyone have any suggestions? Btw, most of my information is adapted from normal rotating wind power generators.

I have a generator that provides 15.5 volts and I have it to one DC 12-volt Battery. I am using a 30Amp Diode, but when I connect the cables to the battery and the output only reads 12.75. When I turn on the 750 watt inverter, It seem to overtake the battery, and takes in very little charge. The battery is new and tested. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Alex
I am going to be hand-wiring up a large lot of transformers. Someone has told me there is an enameled wire (magnet wire) whose coating melts when you dip it in solder (also tinning the copper tip at the same time). What is this type of wire called? I am having a hard time searching for it. Thanks!

What is needed to connect a wind powered generator, producing AC power, directly to my house? I've been looking into wind generators that use F&P Smart Drives. But all of the information I've come across is how to set up a DC system. Based on what I've read, and I'm no electrician, the F&P Smart Drive should be able to produce enough AC power to reduce my electric bill substantially. I'm hoping to find a list of parts, equipment, or a kit that an electrician would need to complete the AC connection. Thanks in advance

I would like to use my 110 volt Jacobs windcharger to charge my 48 volt battery bank. Then possibly switch over to water heat elements as a dump load when the battery bank is full. This last step could use the full 110 volts. The Jacobs is rated at 20 amps, about 3000 watts.
