Rather than charge batteries, can an inverter be used to run the power from the turbine to the grid?

I am looking for tips on creating a small windmill to charge a twelve volt battery. what is the best type of motor to use? Does anyone know how to make a charging circuit, so that even when the winds are low, it can charge the battery? What is the best type of battery? Are there any other questions i should be asking about wind power, and what are the answers to them?

Also, in the meantime I found (of course) a bunch of cool wind projects here (about 20). I really like the vertical Savonius turbines. I wonder if those could be stacked with a similar effect?I've been wanting to do a wind power project for a while, and it seems like a good one to work on with others. Here's a brainstorm to kick things off. Some of you failed to even read the one line question: "How did the wind powered generators work THAT WERE MADE FOR some African primitives?" They were made by an international humanitarian group. Did you notice that the article on this mentioned that the one watt LED light caused the birth rate to drop by one third? Thanks for the great answers that I got from those who read the question.

Hi Guys, I have a 15.6 volt dc motor taken out of a handheld vacuum cleaner. is this suitable to use in a small wind generator as a project with my kids. when i attach it to a power drill and spin it from the shaft i dont seem to get any power generation. I had this idea a while ago. There's a nylon strap strung between two trees. It's let's say 2 cm wide and 5 meters long. A strong wind is blowing across it so that the strap is resonating, displacing through, say, 20 cm at 10 Hz. What is the maximum power involved? If you had one or more wire coils running the length generating current, what kind of efficiency over all could you expect? I'm thinking of this as an ultra cheap and easy means of wind generation.

Hi guys i have come across an induction motor out of a treadmill. it states on the lable that its single phase induction, 240 volt, 4 poles 3/4 hp. 1.7 amp 1420 rpm. question 1- is there any safe way to see if it works question 2 - can it be used for a small wind generator to charge 12volt batteries to light a shed question 3 - is best put in the trash where it came from any assistance advice would be appreciated

Hello!! I need some help here...I am very "green" when it comes to alternative energy, so bear with me please! I recently decided to put together a small wind generation system to power my workshop. System is comprised of a 38v Ametek PMDC motor, 6.8' tri-blade array for propulsion. I also intend on installing a 2000 to 3000 watt modfied sine wave inverter powered by my battery bank to provide AC voltage to the shop. I want to be able to used the majority of the power created by my wind generator. I understand the concept of using a "shunt" but do not have a need for hot water or useless lighting. My question is this, would the Flexcharge NC25A charge controller (www.flexcharge.com/flexcharge_usa/products/nc25a/nc25a.htm) be sufficient enough to used in this system? Or is there something else out there that would maintain my battery bank without shunting the load when the bank is fully charged....Thanks in advance.

What is needed to connect a wind powered generator, producing AC power, directly to my house? I've been looking into wind generators that use F&P Smart Drives. But all of the information I've come across is how to set up a DC system. Based on what I've read, and I'm no electrician, the F&P Smart Drive should be able to produce enough AC power to reduce my electric bill substantially. I'm hoping to find a list of parts, equipment, or a kit that an electrician would need to complete the AC connection. Thanks in advance

Someone please help me.. My hands are getting so tired from doing this!! Ok, My first attempt was simple, Put cardboard on sides of pen, hot glue it down, wind coil. Works great for 18 22 gauge. Got some new 14 gauge wire, well, its A LOT harder than I expected :( What can I do to make winding 40 ft of 14 gauge wire fast and easy? Is there any way I can get it on a power drill or at least something that will make turning it easy? After 2 neat layers on my pen and a lot of tight holding, the 3rd layer started pushing the lower layers away, making the coil get messy :(

I haven't seen anything this on here so I thought I'd step up. Engineers (or anyone who fancies themselves A DIYer) I found a few days back I little some very interesting Wind Powered Rides...six-or-seven-ways-wind-powers-vehicles OK so we know it CAN be done, but can it be done by a DIYer? OK here's my concept, Design and shape are optional but basic components are such: Take a pair of multi-speed Bicycles, their gearing will be the basic propulsion for this vehicle. Take one of the "bikes" and hook up a prop where the pedals "where" and set the wheel output to be higher then the prop speed, this should take care of the foreward movement once going. Now for the initial starting power (Bike 2), this can either be by petal, or by electric (solar/battery- up to you) But the basis for this whole thing is simple energy transfer, if the moving air over the prop causes the drive wheels to go, and by having them geared higher, the vehicle SHOULD move faster the faster you go ..Right? Can I get some math to back this up? it sounds like it would work.

Here's one for the tower-block dwellers - a wind turbine you stick to your window. On the inside, you stick the matching base-station, and the set uses electromagnetic induction to transfer energy from the spinning turbine to the phone in the charger's cradle. It's a neat idea, but I don't know if it's a real product - I tried tracing the links back, and ended up going round in circles in the blogosphere. What I am sure of, though, is that somebody reading this has got the skills and motivation to build their own version. You don't need to use the same design of turbine blades, and it's up to you how it sticks to the window (suckers? magnets through the glass?), but I bet you can do it. I am currently in production of a motor similar to shake it like a tic tac(where im getting wiring)it uses that idea. it is wind powered and uses a small plastic fan blade no current pics sorry but as soon as i get them i will post i cant get it done until i get money for electrical stuff >.<. below is a crappy picture of how it works

HI.. this is my first post on these forums. I want to build a small windmill that will charge ordinary rechargeable AA sized batteries. however there's a problem. I have hooked up my windmill to a motor which produces DC current. Now, the motor provides enough and MORE current to charge the batteries. My problem is how do i protect the battery from overly high voltages and currents that may be generated by the motor?

I am in Kenya and being of a technical persuasion have been asked to fix this geriatric wind turbine. It is an electromagnet (as apposed to permanent magnet) based generator that my friend bought from the Italian scouts. I cannot for the life of me get anything more than about 3V from it. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before and if so have any idea where on earth I might be able to find out a little more about who made it or how I might be able to fix it. I have tried everything I can and still no cigars. Any help much appreciated. I am here setting up this organisation if anyone is interested access(hyphen)wind(dot)com

I would like to get off the power grid. I know I couldn't depend on wind power alone. I was wondering if it is possible to charge the batteries I would use from wind and solar power. How would the wiring work on a setup like that?

OK, I have an idea that sounds kind cool but no working knowledge of electronics. How difficult would it be to make a bank of wind powered LEDS? A circut that progressively lights up more leds as the wind kicks up to a higher speed?

I took apart an old air conditioner for the turbine blades and the second motor is from the air conditioner. The DC motor is from a salvage shop, I don't know any more about it except it was made in Canada. I am a long time out of school and not very handy so please don't suggest I wire my own alternator/generator. I know I am ignorant, but I hope you will keep answering my questions until I build the dang thing. Thanks John S.

I was cleaning my room and found a load of blank CD's. It made me think of all the AOL discs that my house used to get. So I got to thinking - There's a lot of power wasted on these things, right? So, my job for you, Instructables users, is to help me engineer a way to use these CD's to generate solar, wind, tidal, geothermal energy, whatever. Anything renewable. Any ideas?

I’m curious as to why most wind turbines and solar panel inverters generally range from 12-48vdc why cant it just be generated at 240vdc and convert that into 240vac? My understanding is that higher voltage means less current therefore less resistance and heat produced, resulting in a more efficient system. I always hear about inverters generating a lot of heat under load. Does anyone know if this is possible? I'm looking into building a wind turbine to feed power back into the grid, but the cost of inverters are making it an unfeasible project. cheers.

When I read up on the coils used in power generation, I found that the wire used is a type of magnet copper wire, and I bought 1600 feet of it on ebay. My only problem now is winding the coil. I figure I can do something like wrap it a few hundred times around a pole thats slightly larger than the rare earth disc magnets I got. Anyone have any suggestions? Btw, most of my information is adapted from normal rotating wind power generators.

I have access to a huge piece of windy but south facing land, solar gain will not be sufficient for heating green houses, barns, ect..., it is very cold and at high altitude (about 6500 feet). Strong wind blows all the time. How do i turn wind into heat and bank that heat as inexpensively and efficiently as possible. space needed is no issue the property is a half mile wide.

Hello! I need step by step instructions which shows how to build a hydro power system. I have to do this for a small hostel in the mountains. It needs to make 12v atleast and will use a alternator.I will need lots of help from you guys to build it all.Particulatly on the runner(what type for best efficiency,how to build it, cost, tools)and on the housing for the turbine(what material to use,it will have to be very durable and strong).I am an electronics expert so no need to explain to me what is what. Include a circuit which can charge a 12v battery bank . I am aware how a rectifier can be used to convert the alternator's AC to DC.I would like the rectifier circuit too.Added bonus if you show me how to make a housing for the turbine.Also I would like a homemade charge controller circuit too.The controller will have to have dump load options as well.If you can give a good way to water proof the whole thing... Kudos to you I will need all the plans for this project Alternator, Charge controller ,Blades, How to best wire battery bank etc. Please explain what materials to use etc. And please be aware this will be a rather low budget project.I prefer maximum efficiency and please do not worry yourself about where i will get flowing water etc.And please post your own pics if possible.It may not be possible for me to use power tools and a welder,I prefer simple tools, if not, no problem.

I'm on a team prototyping a water filtration system powered by a Savonius wind turbine; the energy from the spinning turbine is mechanically transferred to a reverse osmosis filter/pump setup. We're doing tests of various blade configurations and are trying to determine the power output by hooking up a small DC motor (1-3V, 5000+ RPM) to the shaft. We're seeing only mW outputs though and were expecting something significantly larger. How do we pick a motor for the job? Do we need to match the RPMs of the motor to the expected RPMs of the shaft (~150)? Any other ideas for testing power? Thanks for any help!

Using a fan; can you get more output to power a turbine generator; using a large cog (like a star on a bicycle wheel).To power a bike you have a large star in the front and a small one in the rear which generates more power. So can you do this to power a turbine generator using a fan?

Hi the mars windturbine seems to be a simple idea take a weather baloon add fins allow the baloon to spin bottom over top and connect generators and cable to the ends. It has a stableiser in the center. It would almost make sence to make one by doing. What are good recourses for that? Where can I find more information on it? Hey guys my sister has asked me for some help with a project. She has to have a egg travel 3 meters using wind power. The vehicle has to be small and have 4 wheels. and made of recyclable material. When i heard of this project i immediately thought of instructables. I was thinking of a Styrofoam base with the 4 wheels, a sail with a recycled pc fan, maybe go over the top and make the fan run off a small solar panel? i think i can get one from radioshack.

Hi all,I'd like to make a bunch of small generators, like Pleech turbines, for example. Each one might only be producing a couple volts and however much power. What is the best way to connect them together to get their combined power?I was thinking that I could just give each generator its own rectifier, and then connect everything together in series. Would that be efficient?My circuitry understanding is a little limited, so a simple solution that is 90% efficient may be better than a complicated solution that's 100% efficient.... :)Thanks for any suggestions!

I'm looking at adding a not too obtrusive wind generator to a house I just bought. One of the best I have come across is the honeywell BTPS (Blade Tip Power System) - it isn't as sleek looking as a lot of the turbines I am looking at, but it seems like a good concept to me. http://www.earthtronics.com/honeywell.aspxI can't believe that this company is the first to come up with the concept; has anyone here seen any other similar systems, designed to run in the lower speeds/altitudes common in a smaller residential setup, but generating decent power?

Hi, Recently I purchase a 5000 watt 60cycle, 24vdc to 220vac inverter (MSW) to run my off grid cottage on, when I received it it had a 2 wire out put. could I conect the inverter 220v out to a 220 to 119/220v transformer so i could connect it to my north american house hold elecrical panel?? This would give me the 220v split single phase (full sinewave) similar to hydro power?? Our cottage maximum wattage reguired at any one time we only reguire 12-1500 watts as we have propane stove, fridge, furnass,and hot water. Therefore we only need power for vacum cleaner, washing machine, microwave oven and Led lighting. regards ron

Everybody wants to have a cleaner Earth, but few of them take any actions. One of those people is Doug Selsam, who designed high-power wind turbines that can generate enough energy to power a home. The wind turbines measure about 14-18 inches in diameter and they can generate an impressive amount of 200 watts for a 20 mph wind, but the wind turbines could do better if the winds are stronger.Selsam's wind turbines are made of high-strength carbon fiber materials which give the turbines the possibility to be hooked as one.
