Instructables Windows Phone App

I think that it would be really nice to see an instructables app in the windows phone store, with the windows phone platform growing and becoming more and more successful, I think that a lot of users would be really excited to see an app developed for the windows phone users! Hope this is a possibility because I would really love to see a windows phone app. If progress is currently underway and the app is being developed that would be great, but otherwise I hope that someone will start making one soon.

Android and windows 8 Bluetooth

Well here is my problem, I have seen the many awesome things on instructables that you use an app preloaded on an SD card to control an arduino through a Bluetooth module. But I might get the new windows 8 phones and I don't see any windows 8 phone projects. I would assume that I could easily connect to the Bluetooth module and but what about the app.? Does anyone know where I could possibly find a tutorial?  Please help!

How to install Windows XP IN PLACE OF Android on a phone

I have a Moto E first gen smartphone and a copy of Windows XP lying around, and I was wondering if it would be possible to install XP in place of Android on it. I don't want to run XP on top of Android, I want to erase Android and make XP the only OS on the device. Is this possible? And yes, I know it wouldn't really be useful for anything, it's just for fun.

Wind-powered phone-charger

Here's one for the tower-block dwellers - a wind turbine you stick to your window. On the inside, you stick the matching base-station, and the set uses electromagnetic induction to transfer energy from the spinning turbine to the phone in the charger's cradle. It's a neat idea, but I don't know if it's a real product - I tried tracing the links back, and ended up going round in circles in the blogosphere. What I am sure of, though, is that somebody reading this has got the skills and motivation to build their own version.  You don't need to use the same design of turbine blades, and it's up to you how it sticks to the window (suckers?  magnets through the glass?), but I bet you can do it. Just remember to post an Instructable. Traced back to Yanko Design.  Originally seen on NOTCOT.

Phone LCD screen usage

I want to reuse an LG LCD phone screen that was from an old phone. I want to have it as a notification window style screen for my computer or a twitter feed. Or something like that. Is there any way that I can do this easily? I'm a beginner at any type of coding or hands on building. So any tutorial that is descriptive would be nice. The LCD's are from an LG Chocolate 2 on Verizon and an LG NTLG300GB on Net10 and are both color displays. Any project to make it be able to connect to the computer and have text sent to it.  Thanks, Alex

Cell / mobile phone signal relay.

I work in a building with a metal roof that is also in a small valley. We have absolutely no reception inside the building. Outside we have about 4 to 5 bars, inside there are none. Maybe one if you are near a window. The building is mainly one large open space on the side. I was wondering if it might be possible to passively "pipe in" cell phone reception. I was thinking of a large antenna on the roof that would be connected to a smaller antenna affixed to the middle of the ceiling of the main room. I know the antennas would need to be tuned to the correct bandwidths and I would need a little help with that. (Our carrier is Verizon in the USA btw). Would this sort of setup be feasible?

Is it possible to make an iphone/android app that runs full windows 7?

Is it possible to make such an app that detects all the phone's hardware and runs it at full speed (the app should not emulate hardware)? This app would need to recognize the touch screen as a touch input interface (not an emulated mouse). When the app starts up, it should close out all other system tasks and dedicate the system resources to the app so it can get the maximum amount of RAM/CPU. Also, the OS would probably need to run off a hard disk image file on a 16GB/32GB SD card. If possible, a network interface through 3G/WiFi would be great. Before you say that windows 7 is in x86/x64 architecture and doesn't support ARM architecture, that is another thing this app should accomplish. I noticed that the windows 7 system requirements were a 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and at least . Phones meet those requirements. PS: Right now I am running windows 95 under a QEMU app on my android phone and it runs extremely slow since the whole PC is being emulated (and my phone is only 800MHz and has not all that much RAM). I've tried to run ubuntu on my phone (android is linux based). It worked perfectly, but due to not enough free RAM and the 800MHz CPU, it was very slow (but not as slow as emulated windows!). On a 1Ghz phone, ubuntu appears to run perfectly. If you can come up with an app like this (or find one on google), please post a download link to the site/download link. Thanks, Absol32

Sony Ericsson W200i Troubleshooting

I have a Sony Ericsson W200i one year ago. I wanted to put music and themes in it, but I only had a iMac (shared). The phone came with a CD called "PC Suite" but it is only for windows. So I just plugged my phone in and dragged dropped files in to my phone. I did that a couple times and my phone was fine, then next time I wanted to plug it into the iMac, the phone will not reconise the plug or the computer. So I took it to the phone shop for repairs, and the guy said there was nothing wrong. Now I got a HP windows computer, so I installed the CD, plugged the phone in - same problem Comments will be appreciated.

How can we build a cheap detector that senses a cellular (electromagnetic?) for use as a switch for a computer?

Hi all, we want to use a cellular phone as a "switch" to control a multimedia show. We thought of a cheap sensor that must be able to detect electromagnetic waves through a store window. We thought of phones because everyone has one in they pocket, phone is simply the source of the field. Idea is that customers can move their mobile phones in front of our store window to control a multimedia show in a simple way (forward, backward, pause), so in the end three or four different switches glued to the window would perform as a "control pad" for the computer. Maybe there is a way to base this project on products readily available which can be remodeled. Thanks for sour suppport and ideas! Nomax

3D soldiers and aliens on your desktop ! - Augmented Reality

So for the past few weeks augmented reality has been in the news and all over the blogs quite a bit, with smart-phones getting more powerful augmented reality has become feasible.I get really excited about this kind of stuff, its geeky, techy and i love it.So obviously i really wanted to try this new "Augmented Reality" software,There are various applications for iPhones and Android phones but i have a blackberry with no internet so no joy for me there. There are quite a few different pieces of software for both Mac and PC But i don't have the latest Operating system for my mac so none of it worked for me.So then i started looking for online augmented reality, something where i wouldn't have to download an application. Finally i found a promotional website for the new movie "District 9" The AR (augmented reality) was on the website and you dont have to download anything to use it.All you have to do is print a marker and hold it in front of your webcam. This is not the best AR software and the applications you download run smoother, faster and have more features, but it is a nifty piece of of web design and marketing that will give you a taste of augmented reality. The first time the little 3d soldier pops onto your screen you will be amazed. The website can be found hereMulti-National United TrainingAnd you can download and then print the marker from that website. This is a video demonstrating how to set it up, and a demo of the AR if you dont want to try it yourself. Thanks for reading, Leave a comment saying what you think about augmented reality and how you would like to use it !

How can I get Linux on a T-Mobile phone?

I have an old T-Mobile Dash cell phone.  I want to run some form of Linux (or another open-source OS) rather than Windows Mobile.  I want to be able to do open-source voIP, text, etc.  I also want to be able to use T-Mobile's supposedly excellent international coverage (I'm going to England).  The phone can connect to a computer and has a microSD slot.  Any recommendations are welcome.  Thanks! P.S.  I heard that I could partition off part of the microSD to use as extra RAM.  How do I do this? I'm also thinking of toughening it up to survive drops, falls, water, etc.  Any recommendations as to what to do for that are appreciated.

Nokia Lumia 520 without plan

Hi guys. I have been thinking about making/getting a portable game system, and have come to the conclusion that the easiest and most portable way to do this is to buy a cheap smartphone (either android or windows phone 8.1 but not ios because I don't like apple (except for their ipod series, that idea was revolutionary)) and put only emulators and games on it, maybe even steam or origin or desura, pretty much any good game client. Pretty much just use it as a device to play games on. But, I don't want to pay for a smartphone plan. I have read that you can somehow use an android phone as an ipod, but how this is done I have yet to find...I know that you can unlock and root but you still need a carrier for the phone to work. So my question is do any of you guys and gals have any idea of how to go about using a phone without a carrier, as a game system (which means I really only need data)???????I have searched the internet high and low and cant seem to find an answer. And btw, the phone I want to use is the Nokia Lumia 520 (running windows phone cyan update).

Can I transmit video from one mobile phone to another via Bluetooth connection?

Because I have 20 or so old mobile phones that are perfectly functional, though very outdated, I want to use them for something. I previously had an idea to extend the phone's camera wires so I could use it for a remote camera on a tether, but found no real way of doing such because they all use ribbon cables. Also, I was told voltage drop would cause it to malfunction. Now, my newer idea, for example, would be to mount a camera phone (we'll call it phone 1) to the rear window of my car and transmit the video via bluetooth to a phone mounted to my dash (and he will be phone 2) and allow the two phones to act as a rear mounted camera system. So basically phone 1 at the rear of the car would bluetooth transmit his video feed to the dash mounted phone 2 where I could  just have to glance down in order to see better behind me. This video, plus mirrors should make it pretty easy to know what/who awaits my rear-ward travelling destruction! The phone I carry everyday is an Android phone, so maybe there is an application available for download to allow another phone to connect to it in this way? I have had no luck with searching for one, but I'm not sure if anyone else here happens to know of one. I don't need to record the video, I just want to view the video from another phone in real time. Also, I am aware backup cameras can be had for next to nothing, but I want to try and find a use for some of the old mobile phones I have. I prefer to recycle them for a cool project like this if possible. Thanks for reading!

How could I tell if someone installed a phone tap, camera, or voice recorder in my room?

When I leave for work, I sometimes leave my bedroom window open. There is a medium sized gap between the screen about the size of your fist. Is there a way I could tell if someone has tapped my house? Recently my Samsung Flat-Screen has been very snowy and I remember that you could tell is something has been tapped because they interfere with your tv. The house I just moved into also has a wire panel outside my window which you can reach. My room is first floor, please help. I cannot sleep. I also read that you can tell just if you can pick up RF signals coming from the device. Can someone give me a schematic for an RF Signal detector? I can't afford the commercial ones, I once read a stat that if you suddenly wake around 2am or 3am there is %80 chance of someone staring at you. Your body naturally senses this somehow. Well, when I looked at my window, I saw a light then after a few seconds it was gone. I went outside and I heard a couple of cans fall over and my fence my shaking like it was moved. My gate is usually locked but it is a reletively short fence. I haven't slept for days. I can't stand it. I'm going today to buy some black curtains as these cheap plastic blinds aren't cutting it

Creating a Cell Phone (Kangaroo PC + 4G LTE module + LCD Touchscreen)

Good afternoon, all! As the title sums up, I am looking at the Kangaroo PC [1], which is a $99 battery-powered pocket PC, about the size of a cell-phone, with a tablet processor and a full Windows 10 OS, and I'm asking myself one question. Why is this not a cell phone yet?! Basically, I want to install an LCD touchscreen, a 4G LTE module, and some software. This project is similar to Raspberry Pi cell phones, in the sense that it will be DIY, and the new Microsoft Lumia, in the sense that it hooks up to a monitor for desktop. Does anybody have any advice, or know what direction to point me in? I am specifically asking for help with the 4G LTE module and maybe the LCD Touchscreen. I'm not sure what to get, where to get them, or how to install them. (I've searched and found miniPCIe and m.2 modules, so far.) Thank you!! How do I set up a mobile wifi router (LAN), and a wifi windows machine? Answered

We are a collective of dancers and bicyclists that organize huge bicycle rallies up and down the west coast. There are dozens of bicycle sound systems on these rides, and we seek to send an airplay audio signal to everyone's smartphone with wifi. The software of choice is Airfoil. http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/  For it to send audio, it needs to be installed on a windows or mac computer (not cell phone or tablet). Smart phones can then receive the audio signal. I need help designing a road worthy wifi router and windows machine to be the moving hub of this wifi broadcasting party. Extra points for durability, signal strength and thrift. Please be detailed, because I am only vaguely knowledgeable of wifi, and I'm not that bright. Please note that I am well versed with other options for sending an audio signal. I have reasons for being this specific. Without your help, I would acquire a used netbook with a solid state drive running windows (maybe about $200), grab a wifi router (I have a few older ones lying around) run it all on an inverter and give it a go. Because I am a mac guy, I don't know how to do anything, like how to set up a local area network.... (I usually jam in a cable from a high-speed modem).... we are not doing that on a bicycle, so I'm a bit fuzzy on that part. I am well versed with power supplies, and willing for the range to be less than ideal at first... (that can be improved later) I am just looking to get a trial of this system up and running. I am most appreciative of your help, and I plan on writing a full article on what I've learned, if successful~ Thanks!!! Tor PS, Photo not of me, but these people are obviously awesome, and will love what we are doing.

Please help me fix this storage problem on my android 4.4.2 phone? Answered

Hi, I bought a new (cheap) "AKAI Dragon" android "kit kat" phone, and when I tried downloading more then a few apps, it said that there isn't enough storage on my internal memory. SO, I went to settings -> storage, and selected "phone storage" as the default write disk, and rebooted. Except that didn't work! "Phone storage" was still selected, but nonetheless when I tried downloading apps, the same problem appeared, with a window telling me to either uninstall existing apps, or to go to storage settings. Now, I did/checked everything I could think of for 3 days: as I said, I changed the default write disk, I tried moving existing apps to phone storage myself, but the button was not "active", I even rooted my phone and got rid of all the social apps I didn't want, but no matter what, when I try to install an app rom the play store, I'm met with the same message sending me to storage settings. Every time when I check storage settings, "phone storage" is selected as default write disk, but when I go to app settings, I discover that all of the apps are installed on "Internal storage" with no possibility to move them... (note that I rebooted my device multiple times while changing settings) What is worrying to me is that you cannot even choose "Internal Storage" as a write disk; there is only phone storage and SD card. So, does anyone have an Idea as to how I can start downloading apps to my almost empty 1.5 GB phon storage??? Or is this just a major bug? PS. please note that I'm not unfamiliar with Android phones; this is my third AKAI phone, just a bit upgraded. Also, sorry for the length of the question. Thanks

How can I use a portable scanner with a tablet PC?

Hello, I'm trying something new: I want to completely eliminate paper (and all the messes and lost handouts that go along with it) from my high school career by using a tablet PC and a portable scanner to instantly digitize everything and keep it in one neat, organized spot. However, I'm not sure what the best way to do this is. Basically, I'm looking for a tablet that has - 6 to 8 hours of battery life to last through a day - as large of a screen as possible - the ability to view and search through PDF files - the ability to view and edit text documents (preferably with handwriting recognition) - the ability to effectively sort and organize large numbers of PDF and image files into folders that I can easily access - support for Java and Flash - WiFi - and the ability to connect with a portable scanner that can scan several pages, convert them to PDF files with text recognition, and merge them into one large document Unfortunately, there are so many tablets available on the market that I haven't been able to process everything that I'm seeing! One of the problems, however, seems to be that the new Android tablets are really nothing more than large cell phones and will not be able to interface with a portable scanner in the capacity that I want them to (using an SD card to transfer image files to my tablet from my scanner would not be enough - is there any app for text recognition, PDF conversion, and PDF merging?) while Windows 7 tablets suffer from bulkiness and short battery life. Also, from what I've read, while Windows 7 is optimized for tablet use, with multitouch compatibility and handwriting recognition, many standard Windows programs are not, making them difficult to use without a keyboard and mouse. Do any of you have advice? Thanks! Xellers

Did you notice how the internet and mobile phones totally changed our culture?

Go back just 20 years and on a busy shopping street you saw the poeple walking around as they do today - or did they?I remember poeple talking to each other, standing in front of the shop windows and checking the offers.People greeting each other or stopping for a chat. Now all you see it zombies staring at their phone screen or texting.Even the dreaded "self talker" with a BT earpiece seems to die out.You like fast food don't you? ;)But did you ever bother to waste some time watching people going through the drive through?Back in the days they mostly tried to keep their cigarette going or the girls were busy with the make up.Today it is almost impossibe to spot someone making it through a drive through without playing on his or her phone. The shopping is finnished and all you want is to pay once your trolley was emptied onto the conveyor going to the register. If it were not for the person in front of you...On hand holds the phone to the ear, you hear the latest gossip you don't want to know anything about...And then painfully slow one hand tries to load the trolley again and then finally tries to find a credit with still some money left on it.My favourite are however all those people who are fully addicted to their phone and go mental if you try to tell them. You are having a cold beer with your mate and just want to reflect about the great day fishing.Hold on a second....Oh, did you see this today? ....Ok, just quickly checking FB...Your beer is already number three while your mates beer went warm and stale.Fair enough, was a long day...Then you knock at his door at 3AM to take the boat or or go on a trip.Still half asleep but the phone and all social media must be checked before even making it to the toilet...You get the picture, hopefully not by looking in a mirror now ;)When the "internet" started to be a thing I was already long on the wagon of "online".And back then some big players in the game said "One day we will all be connected in real time!".Of course everyone had a good laugh and moved on.No chance "everyone" could afford a computer, let alone get the skills to go "online".But look at today:You call your provider, tell them you need internet at home and you just plug a box in and have it.Oh, moible is prefered? No problem, just pick the phone you fancy, add a sim card and off you go minutes later.I remember libraries not just as a place to read books but also as a place to learn new things.Explore the world, see other cultures...If you could afford it you might have seen it all for yourself and in real.Today all this is replaced by a single term:"Google it!"What we have today is a simple money scheme created through the totally useless "need" to be connected. So how do you know that you are already addicted to you electronic friend and failed to realise it?Quite simple actually and in the same way as maybe your grandparents did with your parents - if they are old enough ;)Yes I mean the goggle box, the good old TV.Back in the day we said that 4 hours of TV time for a teen is already quite much.We can't escape screens for work or school needs anymore. What we can though is ask:How many hours per day do you spend on yo phone? The time that is not work or school related...How much of your daily life do you organise through your phone by texting, social media or just notes, reminders and so on?Do you complain that even the newest phone newer has enough charge for your "needs"? ;)Do you get cramps in your hands or fingers? ;)Or just plain simple: How long could you really be totally without mobile phone, computer and internet? The answers you give yourself might shock you ;)What are your thoughts on the mobile phone zombies of today?

How do I monitor a security system through the internet?

I am working on a basic security system based on discrete logic and was wondering if there was any way I could monitor the status of the system through the internet and possibly send messages to phones, computers, etc. through the internet when certain inputs went high, which would happen when the system was activated. For example, if a window was broken in the living room, is there a program or way to have my computer be connected to the system so that it would register that the input concerning the living room was at high (or activated) status, and send a text message or email to a phone or computer telling the recipient that a break-in had occurred in the living room? The basic way the system works is that the system will have outputs for each sector monitored, and, when the system is tripped in a sector, that sector's output goes high. I have heard about some microcontrollers marketed as "ethernet/internet appliances" from various places, and was wondering if I could use one of those? I also have an old iPAQ ( see my other pocket PC question for system specifications), and an old Dell computer with a Pentium 3 processor and Windows 98 that I have total free reign over, they are mine; is there any way I could use one of those? Thanks!

Judging Criteria concern...

I was just looking at the Finalist in the Coded Creations Contest sponsored by Microsoft. There are very few where the main part of the project they built was "programming" based, One I read even stated right in the instructable that they just "copied the code from somewhere online which they could not remember were". Another showed how to install software which did involve programming... While the finalists chosen were definately cool and Great instructables were they really "Coded Creations"? Of the entries submitted there were several that did not make the finals that took advantage of thing specifically mentioned in the contest description:  "use of Visual Studio, Microsoft Azure, Kinect/Xbox, Windows Phone apps, or any Windows app". One entry did a phone app that even had voice control.. it was super cool and showed great programming tecniques and cool features but again did not make the finals.  Should the judging not have looked closer at the theme of the contest when picking the best to be finalists? It is like if I build an awsome Jet car from scratch and as part of it I programmed the clock by using code I found online... would that deserve to be in the finals? Sure a Jet Car is awsome but copying code for a non integeral clock while technically it is "coding" but it is not what makes the jet car awsome. I bet if it was stricktly a team from Microsoft doing the judging it would be a totaly different list. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Unable to follow someone

I don't seem to be able to follow contributors any more :(  On my PC, I'm using I.E 10.  I've cleared the browser cache, and explicitly added the instructables site to always allow cookies (which are turned on anyway).  I've also logged off and on several times.  If I click on a the follow button, it briefly displays the 'UNFOLLOW' option and the windows timer mouse icon, before reverting to 'FOLLOW' again.  On my Android phone, I have the Instructables app.  It allows me to follow someone, but does not add them to the list of people I already follow.  Is there a limit on the number of people I can follow?  I'm currently following 24 contributors.  Can you help please?

Hotmail formatting problem - a question from my mother. Answered

My mother uses Hotmail (Windows, IE), and is having an issue with formatting.  Whilst typing an email, the formatting buttons (bold, underline etc) do not all work. They are visible, and if you hover the cursor over them they will tell you what they should do, but nothing actually happens. Worse (for her), the emoticon button isn't working either. Click on it, and the selection of emoticons appears, but none will work. Does anybody have a fix that can be described over the phone to a woman near the end of her seventh decade, who refers to the cursor as "the blinky thing", and who has to keep the instructions for cutting and pasting written down beside her computer?

Laptop won't connect to my home wireless network, but other computers can. My laptop can connect to other networks tho.. Answered

I recently just moved back home from college and I can't use my wireless internet at my house. My laptop has always connected to every other WiFi signals and still does, just not my house signal. The problem is that it says it's connected with full strength, but it just doesn't load any websites or anything else that uses the internet. When I disconnect then reconnect, the internet briefly works for maybe 10 seconds then won't load pages. This is one of the strangest things I have ever seen because my Xbox, cell phone, and other laptop work perfectly fine on my internet. I even bought a brand new, very expensive router to try to solve the problem but that did nothing. I am running Windows 7 and my antivirus program is Kaspersky, if that is any help.

I want to install my own home security system with cameras, keypads, electronic locks...? Answered

Building this massive fence around my buddy's house and it's going to have an electric opener on the driveway gate, so it will already need a keypad for that, but there will also be a smaller gate that I'd like to put an electronic lock on and have a keypad for that too. I have seen sone keypad intercom systems that tie into your phone system and let you open the gates from the phone and even forward to your cell if you aren't home and let you talk to whoever is at your door. I was wondering if there are any security system installer or enthusiasts in the community that could point me in the direction of some resources, websites, or brands for security system components and accessories and whatever you need to tie them all together. We are in a pretty rural area so I am not really worried about the window sensors and that whole side of it, though it might be nice to have the option later. What I really want to do is to have cameras in addition to the keypads and intercoms on the driveway and walking gates. I also want the info to be really easy to access from anywhere in the house, I.e. intercom piped into the phone as I mentioned before, as well as the video on the computer over the network and hooked into the cable so it can be seen on any tv in he house. Bonus if I could view/hear/control the equipment with my smartphone or computer at work. Basically what I need is like the K-nex of security/home automation electronics.
