Windows Vista

I have Windows Vista Home Premium. I would like to change version the image says. I want to change it in system information and System properties so it says I have Vista Ultimate. I would also like to change the welcome screen images? How do I do this? I have been searching on how to change this, but I can't find anything. I AM NOT TRYING TO GET THE FEATURES OF VISTA ULTIMATE OR TRYING TO ILLEGALLY MODIFY THE PRODUCT KEY OR ANYTHING THAT WOULD BE ILLEGAL!!!! I just want it to say I have vista ultimate even though I don't.

Vista?

I have a Vista 64-bit laptop (my previous computer was a copy of windows 2000), and there's nothing i hate more than when my laptop tells me Access Denied. I'm obviously an administrator group with total privilege. Is there a way to get my computer to stop telling me no? I want my computer to warn me when I'm getting ready to do something stupid but if I want to do something stupid then let me do something stupid! Honestly I kinda miss the no interfering way that windows 2000 ran, not telling me no for instance. I guess the point I'm making is, is there a way to stop my computer from telling me no? Also if it will remember that I'm in charge and it should respect / fear me would be cool, too. --thanks

Microsoft's Vista Replacement

Apparently Microsoft has found that Vista was a bad idea and so is producing a replacement which is said to be coming out in 2009.So if we put in Microsoft's usual lateness with release it will be 2010 before anything appears.Edit: Its called Windows 7 and wikipedia has an article on it.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7

A virus wiped my C: drive and deleted Windows Vista off my Notebook.

I downloaded this program off the Internet, and it wiped my C: drive. When I turn on my notebook it loads the Bios and then goes to the loading screen, it stops there and and doesn't even display the vista logo. I have tried the system restore time and time again but it always says that it fails. I went through the software and warranty booklet, and it says that you don't need a disk for system restore as it is already installed on another drive. I was not given a operating system disk for it to reload vista. I do not know what to do, can somebody please help. I think that all I need to do is buy another vista, but don't want to pay the hefty price. what can I do?

How can I get Vista to run faster?

How can I get Vista to run faster without the added expense of buying more memory? I have 1.5 gigs of virtual memory (RAM).? I have used a registry cleaner, checked for malware, etc. I have had Vista for about 1.5 years and I'm now getting to where I really like it. But I don't the fact that it takes so much memory to run. I wasn't aware of this until after I'd ordered my computer or I wold have gotten more RAM. However, it keeps sloooooooooooowing down. Any help, please?

Assistance with Windows Vista, why can't my computer recognize analog outputs/sound does not work?

Okay, I have an HP Pavilion a6110n desktop computer, running Windows Vista ,Service Pack 2. A few days ago, I had the power supply fail, and had to replace it. After that, I noticed that my computer would not play any audio through any of the 3.5mm analog outputs. When I go into sound manager, the computer tells me that the speakers/audio outputs are not plugged in, even though I opened the case and confirmed that they are plugged into the motherboard. In addition, the onboard Realtek HD Audio Manager will not recognize any output other than the digital output, even though most of the analog outputs are integrated into the motherboard itself, and not a separate audio card. I have tried Googling to no avail, as none of the solutions I have tried have worked.  I have tried updating drivers, adding and removing hardware, uninstalling and reinstalling Realtek, even updating the BIOS, all to no avail. I have tried calling both Microsoft, and HP, and they are both unable to help me without me having to pay them. Since my computer is so old anyway, that would not be worth it. Basically, is there an easy solution that will not require me rebuilding my computer? If there is not, I won't even bother. Also, I've tried disabling, then enabling the speakers, from the sound manager, but that does not work either. If there is any possible way to help me with this, i would appreciate it. Thanks in advance. PS I've also included the two audio manager screens I get, hopefully showing the problem better. Edit: I've tried looking at this in Safe Mode, and it gives me a Code 45, basically telling me that the software is physically not plugged in. I'm seriously wondering why my computer can say that, even though the hardware in question is part of the motherboard. Also, if this were a problem, where would I look for blown capacitors?

Upgraded to XP

I gave Microsoft until SP1 for vista, I tried to like it, but lets count the annoyances. SLOW, even with all the twaddle turned off. 2 minutes to boot, five before wireless would connect. Disk copy at a snails pace. 12 minutes to write a one gig usb 2.0 jump drive 10 gig restore partition. 10 gig win sxs folder being repeatedly told "you need permission to do that" on my explicative deleted computer even after turning UAC off. Enoughs enough Now I'm running XP Fast 45 seconds from power on to connected to the network 7 gigs total install 2 minutes to copy one gig to a jumpdrive. Make the upgrade, it's worth it.

Printer Error 0x00000006: HELP!

I have just purchased a Samsung SCX-4300 printer and it works fine on my shared computer (uses windows XP). However, when I try to install it on my laptop (windows vista), it says "ready" but then when I try to open the properties or print a test page it keeps on saying "Error 0x00000006" I have googled it but to no avail. Does anyone have any advice? I have the pictures below. I think the problem lies within the two computers communicating with each other. The computer can access the Public folder and when I make changes within the public folder the computer detects them, so they are definatley 'talking to each other,' but when I click "Add a new printer" in the printer folder, it says "No printers found, despite the fact I have a functioning Canon printer which my laptop can access with ease. I manually add the Samsung printer and it works fine until I click "print test page." That is when the "Error 0x00000006" message appears. I'm no expert in computers, so if someone knows what the solution is can they answer in plain english and not complicated technical language please? Thankyou! Oh and 1 more thing: I don't think it's anything to do with the drivers as the printer is BRAND NEW.

Are you sick and tired of Windows Vista? Answered

Like I said I am frustrated with Windows Vista. I am to the point of formatting the whole drive and just run Linux on it. Windows Vista can't find updates. It is too slow. It freezes constantly. Never finds drivers for the hardware that I have. It asks for your permission for almost everything it does. I can't install the software that I want. Do they think that I am another gullible fool that it is going to run to upgrade to Windows 7? No way! What do you think?

Windows 7 truely sucks

I put Windows 7 pro on my gaming PC, oh my god, it sucks so damn bad! Good thing I dual booted with Vista, I have no clue what everybody was thinking when they said it was good! Every 10 minutes, blue screen on death. Tried everything, removing ram, taking out the video card, changing the power supply, plugging it straight into the wall with out the battery back up, nothing worked, so I booted Vista and it worked great, had it on for 2 days so far. And yes, my computer is very compatible with 64-bit. Windows 7 had a 10 minute maximum. Windows Vista just works, I just wish it had XP mode.

Internet Explorer can not open this website.

This is the message I get when I try to get acess to a website such as Radio Shack.com  I am using a Dell desktop with Windows Vista Home Basic  and am stuck with Dial-up connection which runs pretty slow anyway. The display then shifts to a screen that says something like  This webpage could not be opened.  This is not a new problem.  It's been happening for months. Anybody got an explanation or way to keep this from happening?  I run Microsoft Security Essentials but it always comes up clean.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Could this be caused by a virus or spyware, or maybe a software glitch? Thanks for all replys!  LeShane

Using the Wiimote on Vista

I've been trying for a while now to link a wiimote to my pc as a mouse/game controller/ect. I have been using bluesolei for bluetooth to link them up. I have only so far managed to get the computer to recognize the wiimote with bluesolei. I have bluesolei running and I'm holding down on the 1 & 2 buttons. Then I opened up one of the test scripts in GlovePie and my computer crashed instantly. I had to do a force reboot to get it back to normal. I tried using the GlovePie program several times, each one resulting the same as the first. I'm not sure if it is because I have Windows Vista, or I screwed up somewhere.

Windows on a psp

Hello, ever heard of bochs? Erm...bochs for psp? Well,It sucks instead you DOSbox because Dosbox runs approx 3 times faster than bochs. Dosbox starts in approx 10 seconds Boots windows 3.1 is about 10 seconds Boots windows 95 in about 1 minute, not 10 minutes I have a few scripts that start it they are: osrun.bat (asks the user weather to start win 95 or win3.1) 95run.bat (boots windows 95) 31run.bat (starts windows3.1) Should i make an Instructable for this? you know..setting it up..making the images and whatever FAQ: Q:y u put windos95 Y NOT VISTA???!!!111 A:because a psp does not have a 1.5GHz duo processor and 1GB+ of ram Q:what other oses can it run? A:You can run the following: dos(comes in dosbox) OS/2 Warp(has not been tested but theoretically it should work) Windows 1.0-3.11(windows 3.1 has been tested and others should work) windows 95(tested and works perfectly) windows 98(ive heard stories but i have not tested it it may work) It cannot run windows 2000 and up because it is unsupported by Dosbox and by far its unsupported by bochs. a bit more info: The psp PHAT can emulate up to about 5 Megs of ram Just 1 meg above what windows 95 needs and thats BARE MINIMUM!!! The psp SLIM can emulate up to 16.5MB of ram which is about the recommended amount of ram for windows 95 ALso the psp's processor normally runs at 222MHz but can run at the full 333MHz its underclocked so that the battery lasts long and don't worry you wont damage your psp by running at a full 333MHz it will just eat up a battery like i eat up a macadamia nut cookie. So should i make an instructable?

Question about upgrading Windows XP to Windows Vista? Answered

I am trying to upgrade a Windows XP Pro system with Service pack 3 to a Vista Ultimate system with the end goal of then upgrading to Win 7. Again the intention is to do an upgrade, not a clean install. This particular OS started life as a Win 95 system. Was upgraded to Win 98 then 98 second edition and then finally to XP. It has run on multiple motherboards and processors and many many hard drives. But I have hit a snag. Vista ultimate will not give the option of upgrading. And by the way, this IS the upgrade version. It says so on the box and on the DVD.  The option to upgrade is there but it is grayed out and a note says that it needs to do a clean install. If I wanted to do that I would skip Vista and go right to 7 to start with. So something is causing the install process to not want to make the upgrade. I am thinking it might be the service pack 3 of XP since the SP3 came out after Vista did. But I can't find any information about it. After all this is more than 10 years in the past.  I am of course working off a clone drive so I can experiment and would just uninstall SP3 to try it but the uninstall is not available.  As far as I can figure a repair was done using a SP3 disk of XP and that eliminated the uninstall. Now I can try doing a repair with a SP2 disk of XP in order to roll it back to SP2  but that might cause it to become unbootable and if not would for certain cause it to need to be activated again, which now will not happen over the internet but requires that you call somebody in India and read long strings of numbers back and forth to each other. I would hate to go through all of that and discover that it still will not upgrade. So the question is: is anyone familiar with this upgrade process and is there a way to force the upgrade option? By the way, I have both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Vista and the XP is a 32 bit version. So that should not be the problem.  Any thoughts about this?

Can you help me? Trying to tweak the sound, on my laptop running vista, I changed the setting under speakers properties>advanced>Default format. I foolishly changed the default format to another setting, thinking I could always switch it back. Immediately the sound from my youtube windows ceased. I tried switching it back and applying the settings. No joy. I tried restoring default settings. No joy. I can still hear windows sounds, just not stuff I WANT to hear. Anybody know how I can fix this? EDIT: Nevermind, I fixed it...errgh...should've just rebooted in the first place.

When this happens the mouse cursor and keyboard do not work. The old "Alt-Control-Del" doesn't do anything. I have to reboot and sometimes it freezes up during the boot process. It doesn't seem to be related to what windows I have open and will not happen for hours and then sometimes twice in a few minutes. If I leave it alone for some time it will sleep and not always awake. Does anyone have a solution or need more information about this problem? Any help will be very appreciated. Jerry

Dead laptop

My acer aspire 6920 laptop doesn't boot. I have tried the POWER RESET (as an option specified on the acer website), by removing the battery, unplugging, and holding the power button for 20-30 seconds. This had no effect. How it happened:I was playing a game called Warzone2100 on Ubuntu, and it FROZE, so i did a hard shutdown and then.....When I press the power button the following happens:>The Cinedash, and power button light come on . The Hard drive and Cd-rom, fan, and HDD start-up as well.>The hard drive light above the caps lock and num lock indicators flashes seven times consistently, with about a 3/4 of a second between each flash.>The system shuts off completely>(without anyone pressing the power button)The system turns back on and nothing happened.>The system requires a hard shut down.During this entire period NOTHING shows up on the screen, and the back light stays off.I think my BIOS is a PHOENIX and according to some research 7 BIOS beeps means its a bad processor. So I think my flashing light could be a Bios indicator. If my conclusion is true, do laptop processors cost ? and where would I be able to get one ?Are they easy to install ? are they interchangeable with desktop processors ?BTW My processor is an Intel Centrino T5750 Dual Core 2.0ghz.Thanks to anyone who helps me out !

My Windows won't run Java or Minecraft?!?

Whenever I run Minecraft it will come up with an error message saying bad video driver and OpenGl and such. I deleted my .minecraft and got a fresh new folder without any mods and it didn't fix the problem. Also, when doing the Java check it won't run and when going on a game on Pogo it won't run and says I need to install Java. However that is only for Google Chrome but it WILL work on Internet Explorer. I have Java enabled as a plugin as well. Please help I have one more thing to say: Before this laptop was Windows Vista Home Premium. Now I upgraded it to Windows 7 Ultimate x32 bit and I did it for free from YouTube, Lol ikr. All was required was to mount the Ultimate to a virtual drive using PowerISO and to install Windows 7 and then to use a program called Windows 7 Loader by DAZ v.2.2 or something like that which would activate the key and before I activated it, it was already saying it was activated. Lol long story short, HOW CAN I FIX THIS? (Also my video driver crashes once in a while like 4 times a day in use and recovers XD). Please reply! :)
