Not sure if it's kosher to post this here, but I've started a Facebook group for Makers Without Borders. It's an idea I've been interested in for a while, and eventually I would like to establish this as a NGO. https://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/group.php?gid=317556060361 "A group for makers, inventors, artists and anyone wanting to use their practical skills to improve the living standard of the people of the world. This can be in the form of information sharing, publishing / donating designs and innovations, or working directly with communities to develop their own infrastructure and make the things they need to survive and thrive."

This is just a quick question and possibly a suggestion too (I'm really bored because I'm waiting for these ISO's to finish downloading). Has anyone else tried Oreos with a drink other than milk? I just tried Oreos with Cran Apple juice, and I think it's better. Any other opinions? (Reminder: I'm very bored.)

I was wondering if it would be easy enough to setup an old, powerful enough laptop to run Linux withoud HDD from SD card or other means without HDD? I have my old HP NC4000 gathering dust in the storage. It has no HDD and I need to fix the display which has 1/3 from top of LCD gray. If I manage to fix the LCD then it is worth resurrecting.

This tablecloth has been stiffened with starch or epoxy or something to keep its shape so that it can stand alone without a table below it.It's pretty fun for a picture, but unless you're right there on the ground like in the main pic below it's not too obvious. Well, maybe it's just not my style, but I'm sure that anyone else here can replicate it if they were interested. So how about it? Want to take it on? First person who does an Instructable about this will get... something. A custom patch and maybe something else. Link via bbgadgets

I know there are instructions all over the internet on how to do this but as far as i can tell the instructions are without the original disk, if i have the original disk is there a way to download all the information to the computer so that i can launch the game from a folder? a way that doesn't make punkbuster (EA games) kick me if i play online. essentially i want a digital disk so i can use the original as a backup and i won't have to worry about my family removing my disks and destroying them (they tend to leave disks anywhere they can put them down). As a random note im always worried that when transfering my disk from the case to the drive that something will happen as in the past i have been pushed and i dropped the disk, it landed on an uneven surface and someone stepped on in breaking it.

I am rather disappointed that I am finding instructables that point to websites. I think Instructables is getting desparate if peope post something here, without proper instructions(intentionally left out) and then feature it. Perhaps it is an accepted process here now, in which case such instructables are not to blame but merely a symptom, or perhaps misperception on my part, of what the purpose of this site is for. Case in point: https://www.instructables.com/id/A-New-Workbench/ I don't mind if you create an instructable, put up all the directions, and then also point to your site. But to put up, not even half, of the instructions and then point to your site seems dissapointing, if not misleading to me. This is a dangerous slope from people who "share what they do and how they do it" to a company simply advertising to get other people to their own site. I am the only one who feels like this?

Hey, i just got an arduiono uno and for now i made some testing (leds blinking and servo control and stuff like that) so im very new at it, But i have this idea i wanna make, i set an potentionmeter or i cant remember the name (you know one of the thing you turn and it gives you more or less power like when you control your sound) BUT i sat the turn thing on a servo so i can control it, and then i set it on a garabage collecter (a long arm i think the name is, you know for folk in wheelchairs that cant reach the floor use i to grab stuff) so i made a electric garabage collecter. But i have a very big problem: it have to be plugged into the usb from the computer to work. So my question is, i see there are 2 places for putting in power and im wondering, if i upload the code first, then take usb out and plug the phone charger alike wire in, will it then work? and i do have loads of loads of batteries but i dont know how much power or anything the arduiono needs. So please help me. and sorry for my bad english. Markus

Our cable company is terrible. We've tried getting satellite (directv) but there is a big tree in the way and we rent so we can't do anything about that. You can get good quality versions of all of the actual shows that we watch online somewhere (directly from the network's website, hulu, etc). And watching them that way gives you all of the convenience of having a DVR - watch whenever, rewind, fast forward, pause, etc. Also, our TV has a PC input (which we use frequently). So I was thinking of getting a cheap computer to leave hooked up to the TV and set it up to easily navigate through shows. That way we could get rid of our EXPENSIVE and CRAPPY cable. The only problem is sports. I couldn't care less about them but I live with my boyfriend, who loves hockey. Hockey is the hardest sport to watch with low resolution (the puck is tiny! I can't find it in HD sometimes). It's also never shown on the local channels (so no option of the cheapy cable or using some kind of antenna). NHL.com has a subscription you can get to watch online but it won't show you games if it's available on your local cable. So basically - does anyone know of a good place online to watch live (preferably free and good quality) sports? Hockey is the most important but also football/baseball/basketball. Any help would be appreciated!

You could also ask "What would a god be without believers?" (because not all gods are human-like). Lots off people all over the world believe in one or more gods. But what if (and I say if because it isn't very likely) all human beings on this planet would stop believing in there god (or gods)? What or who would a god than be? Would a god than be a funny drawing on a wall or just some guy in a book? Perhaps the new neighbours, the mailman or the birds in your garden were ones your god, until you stopped believing. Think, philosophies and give your opinion about this question! I'm curious who or what a god would be without believers according to you.

I am wanting to build a personal ultralight helicopter. First issue here is to find a suitable engine. Outboard motors have the 40+ horsepower I need and can be found pretty cheaply on places like craigslist. One thing I know about these engines is that they use a water pump to suck up water and cool the engine. It is important that this water is present and can the engine can be wrecked if it is run without water for more than a minute or two. Short of including a water tank on this helicopter, do any of you have any practical solutions to keep an engine like this cool? (Just so you know, an "ultralight" helicopter must weigh under 249 pounds without the passenger. In the US, you can fly ultralights without a pilots' license. 40hp outboard motors weigh around 160lbs so I don't have a lot of room for heavy water.)

I am trying to build a holder, that will hold onto a pipe. So apparently, it will be cylindrical in shape. And from 1 end it would be cut and curved at 90 degrees. And 3 holes would be drilled into that space. So like i can lock the holder onto pipe and take it off whenever i want, just by screwing or unscrewing. However, as you can see screwing every time would suck. Very inconvenient. And there is no need to screw 3 screws. 3 are for support, screwing 1 would be enough to keep in place. But if i dont screw all three screws 2 may fall off. How can i do it so screws stay stick to the base. Use glue? of some sort. Use some sort of washer that holds screw(difference only that nut would be thick.) i need help. :D

I just published an instructable (here), and the tip text displays when I edit, and sometimes when I view it, but usually it does not display. For example in the intro, the first pic (of the cake) has 5 tip boxes, and the second (of the supplies) has 7. The pictures are there, but usually (although not always) no boxes or tips are visible. Thoughts?

OK. So I have a box, a little bigger than a piece of paper. I want to give said box to somebody in 6th period on the last day of school. I have 5th period with said somebody, and they are usually pretty much last out of class. I want to give this box to them, but not actually be there, and I want it to be the end of the day. My original idea was to stuff it in their band locker... But... We won't be using those for the rest of the year. Then I thought, what if I was to beat said somebody out of class, run to their sixth period, and tell the teacher they left it in another class, all in time to make it out without them seeing me? I would probably have a timeframe of less than a minute to talk to this teacher, but I don't know... That would be cutting it pretty close, and what if they were the first out of the class then? Then I would be screwed. I may be able to convince a teacher to help me out, like maybe hold said somebody back on the last day to give me more time. I don't know. Any ideas?

I'm working on a project and I needed to get a PCB made. I was planning on getting it from BatchPCB, but I ran into a little problem... I'm using a NAND Flash chip, which is TSSOP48; the footprint has 6mil spacing! (BatchPCB has a 8mil minimum) The next cheapest solution would be Barebones PCB, which makes prototype PCBs without soldermask & silkscreen. I'm worried about soldering on the Flash chip, and another LQFP48. Will the lack of a soldermask make it impossible to do?

I decided to try my hand at making jewelry with a cheap piece of steel. Partly, because of price and partly due to not being able to find a large enough piece of stainless. It turned out great. However I know it will rust if I don't protect it somehow. I'd prefer not to paint it l, because of the work to buff it to a high shine. Any ideas on how to protect it from rusting when in contact with skin?

Taking parts off electronic junk collected over time: Now ready to demolish a huge LCD TV (matsui) with the power supply circuit board missing (origin: dumpster). Quite some mean looking 'transistors' on large heatsinks. Before turning the heat gun on it, I tried to look up the serial numbers on them, but found nothing. Does this happen often? If not found, is there a way to measure, or otherwise find out what the components can do? (I still have a steep learning curve ahead, right now I mostly want to know if it's worth the trouble stripping them off) The LCD/ backlight part: Is there anything this can be used for (without working control electronics)?

Can anyone suggest a simple way to accurately drill a hole in the end of a dowel so that it's perfectly centred and parallel to the sides? I want to install hardware in two brush shafts to make a break-down pole that will support a tarp, and will fit in a car boot. If you imagine the brass hardware you see in a snooker cue, you'll get the idea. I could make a jig to hold, and align, the drill and dowel but it's a lot of fuss for a rig I probably won't ever use again.

So here is a question that I'm sure somebody knows how to make this work. I have a Jeep, and I never listen to the radio or have a need to play CDs. So what I want to do is rip out the stereo and mod in a female headphone jack so I can plug in my iPod. I don't see the need for a stereo anymore, so if I could just have the ipod and speakers I'd be happy. I know there is going to be at least one issue, which is the iPod wont be able to drive all the speakers, so some sort of homebrew amplifier will need to be built. Anybody already done this or at least know how to do this?

Well I am new to quadcopters so please forgive me if I am wrong. Well I am set about to build a quadcopter and was doing a bit of research on the internet and most of them were telling me to get ESC for controlling the speed of the motor. I want to know if I can substitute it with something cheaper which basically varies the output using pwm input from the microcontroller(something like opamp) Another question is about motors ,is it a must that I should get brush less motors We'll I have two options Brush less 1500Kv motor for about 30$ each Normal 24000rpm 12v motor for 6$ each So which one is better and if brushless why so. Apart from that how much would a completely finished quadcopter wiegh (approx weight)

You work hard on a good, clear Instructable with really good photos. The Instructable shows how to do something most thought could not be done at home, but you found a simple way to do the job. Any who follow your Instructable will benefit from it and will save money. It is a better Instructable than others you have done that were featured by the editors. But, this one gets no notice from the editors and is not featured. It is always nice when an Instructable of yours is featured, but it does not always happen. So, what really counts? I have noticed there is some intangible factor of cool in the minds of editors that may attract viewers to the site and gets an Instructable featured, but has little connection to any real practical value of an Instructable. Ultimately, the site is about drawing viewers and keeping advertising dollars flowing. It means a lot to me when people refer my Instructable to others. It is meaningful when people who can make use of the Instructable view it. When someone marks my Instructable as a favorite that is even better. I really like it when someone makes what I made based on my Instructable. I do not care if that person modified what I did. We do not have the same tools, nor do we have the same skills or needs or materials. What really makes my day is when someone comments or sends a private message to say my Instructable solved a problem. Also very good is when someone searches the Internet for a solution to a problem, and joins Instructables because he or she found my Instructable and it helped with what was needed. Recently, Instructables published a printed collection of Instructables. Several of mine were chosen to appear in that book. Guess what! Most of those chosen were not featured, yet they were included in the book! That is a very positive affirmation about the real value of those Instructables. I have also had the experience that my Instructable was not featured initially, but months, even years, later an editor took a second look and featured it. In summary, getting featured is nice, but there are other metrics that really are much more meaningful.

Hi guys. I have been thinking about making/getting a portable game system, and have come to the conclusion that the easiest and most portable way to do this is to buy a cheap smartphone (either android or windows phone 8.1 but not ios because I don't like apple (except for their ipod series, that idea was revolutionary)) and put only emulators and games on it, maybe even steam or origin or desura, pretty much any good game client. Pretty much just use it as a device to play games on. But, I don't want to pay for a smartphone plan. I have read that you can somehow use an android phone as an ipod, but how this is done I have yet to find...I know that you can unlock and root but you still need a carrier for the phone to work. So my question is do any of you guys and gals have any idea of how to go about using a phone without a carrier, as a game system (which means I really only need data)???????I have searched the internet high and low and cant seem to find an answer. And btw, the phone I want to use is the Nokia Lumia 520 (running windows phone cyan update).
