Can someone explain logarithms?

Seeing all of the other math Instructables on here, I was surprised not see one on logarithms. I just want to learn beyond my mundane curriculum. Thanks.

Woo hoo! A fully operational search capability. Now Google is all our friend

Yippie!  Whoopie!  Yahoo! Many thanks for including a real search capability (Powered By Google[TM]) to Instructables.  The form and content of the results will take getting used to, I'm sure, but being comprehensive and supporting all the nice Google operators will be awesome.

Minor bug: Issues of featured/popular tags

Hiya, I've had a couple of instructables 'featured' that don't have the featured bit on the corner such as my concrete rhubarb leaf: https://www.instructables.com/id/Ornamental-paving-slabs/ which I got an email saying 'watch the front page' but it never appeared and still didn't get the flashing.  Was this a mistake email sent out? Similarly today got a 'your instructable is popular' but it's not updated to show 'popular' - it's https://www.instructables.com/id/Simple-Pioneering-Build-a-Monkey-Bridge-from-woo/ Any ideas?

Talk like Shakepeare day!

Thursday has been declared Talk like Shakespeare day! We don't know exactly when he was born, but we're calling April 23 close enough! Readeth the proclaimationeth. Refuse to speak in any tongues save ye olde english Thursday, and force your friends to do the same! Here are 10 quick tips on how to talk like Billy from http://talklikeshakespeare.org/:1 Instead of you, say thou. Instead of y'all, say thee. (This one will be hard for me! :D )2 Rhymed couplets are all the rage.3 Men are Sirrah, ladies are Mistress, and your friends are all called Cousin.4 Instead of cursing, try calling your tormenters jackanapes or canker-blossoms or poisonous bunch-back'd toads.5 Don't waste time saying "it," just use the letter "t" ('tis, t'will, I'll do't).6 Verse for lovers, prose for ruffians, songs for clowns.7 When in doubt, add the letters "eth" to the end of verbs (he runneth, he trippeth, he falleth).8 To add weight to your opinions, try starting them with methinks, mayhaps, in sooth or wherefore.9 When wooing ladies: try comparing her to a summer's day. If that fails, say "Get thee to a nunnery!"10 When wooing lads: try dressing up like a man. If that fails, throw him in the Tower, banish his friends and claim the throne.

Picture in picture is faster than TV screen?

I was just watching the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup (woo), and my dad turned on picture in picture so we could see what another channel was broadcasting, but as a default it started on the same channel. The weird thing was the picture in picture was a full 1-2 seconds ahead (the audio was synched correctly with the main picture). It's an HDTV connected to a cable box. This is pretty much the least important question ever, but I found it weird and wondered if anyone had any ideas.

Objective-oriented Contests

On Instructables, contests have tended to had very limited specifications beyond a general theme they work to. I propose this trend be broken in favor of something a bit more actively competitive: hold contests where the objective is set and have people compete to meet that stated goal as set by the contest host. The parameters that entries would be judged upon would be laid out in the briefing, as would any material or cost limitations. Holding competitions in this manner would entice people to competitively build something to meet the requirement the host sets and to do their best to hone their project to succeed in the relevant parameters. I think this would be a nice change from the chaotic randomness of current contests where there isn't much competition among entries, besides wooing people for votes to win finalist positions.

Off-line Instructables Editor

Often, projects do not happen at our computer desk, or even somewhere with internet. Maybe you want to work on your Instructable on an airplane ride. Maybe you only have access to the internet at the library. Either way, it would be nice to have an official Instructables user interface that is available for download. You could completely flesh out your Instructable on your own time, without access to the internet, and then just upload the whole thing all at once. The steps, keywords, images, and instructions would all auto-fill into an online version and you'd be set! Woo! I understand this would take some work, but I'm just throwing it out there. Something preliminary could even just be a rudimentary template that you work within and then the site can read the template and grab everything it needs off your computer. Your thoughts?

Underlying goal/purpose of having contests

What is the fundamental purpose of having Instructables Contests? To me, the idea of having contests in the arena of DIY is a tad odd. One of the biggest reasons I like to make things and do my own projects is that it is purely creative, and it is not in the least bit competitive. We all get to put in our two cents and help each other out and grow our collective knowledge. No matter how you spin it, for every 3 winners in a contest there are still dozens (hundreds) of losers. Of course, that's not saying that the losers have bad projects, but they still lost. Game over. One possible reason to have contests is to prompt more Instructables to be made in a certain category. Thus we have Burning Questions. But who says that the best "how to add" Instructable is submitted during the contest. The "best" one during the competition will win, but that's entirely relative to the competition. Now we have a WINNER "how to add" Instructable, which looks quite a bit more appealing to click on than any other similar submission, even if the others contain little snippets of awesomeness here and there that are above and beyond what is in the "winner." Now you have failed to capture and direct people to the best source of help on "how to add."There are many other reasons not to have competitions, but I'll leave it at this for now so that I don't write a book.Instead, why don't we try "Challenges" that have no deadline. Instructables can challenge the Instructables community to do projects in a certain category (just like contests) to push their agenda (reusing bottles, answering common questions, etc.). If you leave the "vote" feature active, you can then see them ranked by user preference, while never closing the field to new submissions.Let's get some friendly debate going! woo.

Instructables Internship - Day 4

Alo Again,Well, this morning I didn't have the opportunity to burn my PB sandwich, not only because it was a PB&J; sandwich, but because the oven was filled with semi-burnt roasted tomatoes/garlic.Anyhow, Today I did some more outreach for the new Launch It! Contest and... drumroll please.... Billy and I shipped all of the remaining Laser Cutter Contest Winners' prizes! Woo Hoo! Other than that, the morning was pretty chill. I'm getting used to the much more relaxed setting here at Instructables. At all of my other internships I've had, everything was always so fast-paced, tense, and ridiculously demanding. At Instructables, everyone's just Chill. Everyone enjoys what they're doing. It's awesome. Also, I downloaded the Instructables MySQL dumpfile from Rachel, and I'm in the process of getting it back into MySQL. Eventually, I'm going to try and make some cool new statistic features for you guys!Billy and I tested out some LEDs and my ultra-thin/flexible solar panels, which are hella awesome. The specs say that they get 3V @ 22 mA max in the sunlight, but yesterday, I got that in the shade. In the sunlight?: 4.19V!After that, Jason, Billy, Noah and I checked out the Water Jet in Instructables' machine shop. Billy had to cut some stuff for a project of his, but watching the machine "do its thing" was really cool. There's so much awesome stuff here, I still can't believe it.Noah, Jason, and I then picked out some stuff that was going to get thrown out to use in Proj. X, and we ordered the Surgical Tubing, too! Then, Jason, Mike (Works for Potenco), and I went to the beach to check out the kite boarders, and fly the trainer kite. (Eventually, we'll get to kite board, too!)Alright, I think that I'm actually going to go get started on Proj. X now...I've included some pictures that I've taken throughout the day.Cheers,-MuffinatorP.S. I came up with an awesome badge idea, and I'll draw it up today on the computer. I'll post it by tonight, so make sure you tell me if you like it or not!

K'Nex Guns Need To Move On!

Alright, someone needs to say this so i will. Knex guns are stuck in this sort of, generic handguns, average assault rifles, shotguns with nothing new. We all need to rack our brains and come up with some concepts, then post them. So we can all have a crack at a what would be considered "HARD" concept. We need to be trying new ideas. We're stuck in a dark age of nothing new (only rarely something good might come out) we need to step forward . Basically, I'd much rather see some pics of a failed concept and what you were trying to acheive than, "Removable Mag Handgun" or "M8AR (MegaMetal8's Assault Rifle)" which is just a generic removable mag gun. I Say one of us with quite alot of subs needs to make a ible/forum where EVERYONE has access and can post concepts. Its just getting boring with all this, so for more fun and ideas. Together, LETS DO THIS! Thankyou for reading and together we can make this happen. -MM8

Updates and junk

Howdy. It's that guy who posts like once every 5 months and says he'll make something but never does. I try, I really do, but then I lose interest in whatever I'm working on, forget about it, and get back into class work. Just to reiterate, I'm on my last semester of college and I just had a job interview, so crossing my fingers that I'll get the job. It's for an associate software engineer position if anyone cares. Programming and crud. Woo. But it'll pay quite handsomely, enough so I may invest in more K'nex in the future. Anyway, once I finish college and get the job (I'm like 85% sure I have it already) I'll pretty much be free to my hobbies after work. I'll have moved out and be living with my friend's parents (awkward) until he moves out and gets a house, in which then I'll live with him until I'm ready to get my own. The point of mentioning this is that other than playing games with him, I won't really have much to do so I'll probably get back into K'nex and do a lot more than I have been since starting college. Hope the community hasn't died off yet. I'm working on a capstone project to graduate, a website that hosts an IRL game of sorts that I came up with. I don't want to link to it yet, but just be on the lookout for when I do. I plan on getting a demo of the game up within the next two weeks or so.  So, here's the last thing I was working on before I went on another hiatus. I basically wanted to make a just for fun, but still decent gun that'd perform better than the UMP. I call it the Ninjato, going along with the SMRI theme. The ninjato is often portrayed in Hollywood as a small, katana-like sword wielded by ninjas. So I considered this gun in a similar relation to the SMRI, something based more on compactness and stealth rather than a signature weapon. The idea is that if it were a real firearm, it'd be a compact, internally silenced SMG. There are some obvious resemblances to the SMRI (I'm really liking the rail system and sights I developed)  and the UMP. It was haphazardly thrown together in many ways, such as a really cruddy trigger guard I meant to be temporary and no trigger system yet. I was also meaning to get a stock on it and get it firing before I showed any pictures, but of course I never did and I've left it to sit unnoticed for too long. The magazine was meant to have an internal pusher and of course attach UMP style, though it had broken pieces so I was iffy on it. I thought about using it to make a horizontal-mag weapon, though. Overall, the gun looks weird I admit, especially without a stock, but I figured I'd show it anyway. I don't plan on finishing it. Anyway, my next project I'm thinking is to go even simpler than the Ninjato. I thought that I'd more easily complete a smaller weapon and apparently and SMG-esque weapon still wasn't small enough to keep my attention. Well, my natural calling is pistols so I figured with the revival of essentially the sidearm fad, I'll have a go at making a version 2 of my TDSS, again mostly just for fun. And also considering that Instructables somehow lost my old TDSS instructable, it seems fitting. I'm very busy, so I really hope I can dish this one out ASAP.
