Writing Partner

I am hoping to write with somebody on an experimentation novella of sci-fiction. English speakers are preferred, will be an informal schedule, focusing on plot and setting, symbolism is a lesser aspect, professional quality, and will self edit their work. I have a plot and idea, would like to write the novella using a tennis style of writing alternating chapters. I may self-published (Lulu.com). Working under the CC licenses. Wouldn't at all mind having a long term writing partner. Comment here or email me at 94johnjy94@gmail.com! :D

Writing biography?

Write Up Deleted

I just spent 4 hours writing up a really kick butt guide using the new editor.  I went to publish.  Published it.   I had something like 15 steps written out, and then I had three.  Just three.  The rest were gone.  No idea why or how. What happened is that I started writing in the "old" editor, but stopped three steps in before switching to the new editor.  Seems as if the system didn't like that. Oh well.  Looks like I wasted four hours of my time.

How not to write complaints

As I see comments complaining over certain aspects of projects often enough, here is why some of these quips are utterly futile in their nature and go unacknowledged by many. Here's one posted a few days ago: "It's confusing for people without a technical understanding." This comment was posted to an instructable with 17 steps and several dozens of photographs. Because there is no indication of what the problem is, this statement is all but meaningless. There is nothing on which to base a response with help tailored to the commenter because he has not explained his plight's origins. If you are going to make a complaint or ask a question, identify the relevant subject. That will grease the skids for any correspondence that follows. Without it, your bid for a chat is more complex needlessly.

help writing a story?

I know that this type of question has been absolutely done to death (where did that expression come from anyway?) but I have a premise for a science fantasy story. I have a skeleton of an Idea of what the story will be, but here's what I have so far. Time: unspecified. Disaster: sometime in the distant past, a disaster the likes of which hadn't been seen since the biblical day's of old was swiftly falling upon the land. Somewhere in in the middle of the pacific ocean, a poisonous green fog begins to seep off of an unremarkable island, volcanic in origin, about a square mile in size. This wouldn't have been a problem, since such a small amount of fog would have eventually lost itself in the vastness of the planets atmosphere, and the stuff it was made of was largely biodegradable through a variety of ways found in nature. So it was sensationalized for a while, with the usual kerfluffle, and then it was quietly forgotten as some new crisis arose, banished to the shady corners of science, with only the ocassional visit from some obscure science foundation sponsored trip. And that was that. That is, until, somebody noticed it was growing. And  sure enough, it seemed that, contrary to what the specialists said, it was slowly, steadily, patiently growing, getting thicker and thicker. Eventually, (about four years) an expedition was chartered to go into the now opaque cloud. Here is one adventurers account of what it was like. " After a looong and boring flight, we neared the destination. Looking out, all I could see was what looked like a big greenish-brown mound. the truly weird thing about it was that it's edges weren't very well defined and looked like what you would expect something like a giant cloud of steam would look like that was left to dissipate, but there was a definite edge to it that billowed like a great sheet of canvas in the wind" Note: this is not the end of the story and setting, just my present atention span. I promise to include more of the setting and premise in the comments, but for now i'm completely fried.

A collaborative literary experiment that you can contribute to

This weekend Eureka! Factory and the Hive makerspace at Tampa's John F. Germany library will be participating in the Deconstruction hackathon. Our project this year is a literary hack. We are asking for random sentences from the imaginations of the general public. We will collect sentences from now until 7PM EST on Saturday, November 15th. We will spend the following 24 hours wrangling the collected contributions into some kind of narrative form. It will be a fun experiment. For more information and to contribute visit the Instructable here and leave a sentence in the comments. We will post the results on Sunday evening. Thanks!

Also, if you're interested in participating in a study about how people document design work, please send me a message, and I'll provide some more details!

How do you go about writing your Instructables? Answered

After having authored several Instructables, I have found that some of my best articles would never have been published had I not just told myself, that's good enough.  Not necessarily meaning the content is light or hasn't been researched thoroughly.  I mean, reaching the point where you just have to do it and publish the article.  Being the perfectionist that I am, I have a tendency to make corrections after I publish, so unfortunately, the first viewers miss that content.  Maybe I should take more time to evaluate my work before I publish it, but honestly, I use that pressure to keep my momentum going, knowing that there are people reviewing my work.  What are your thoughts?

Question by bitsandbots   |  last reply

Should Instructables titles begin with "How to..."?

I tend to write the titles of my 'ibles as if the phrase "How to..." was already there. Thus: Get Any Information... Knit replacement pads... etc. I notice, though, that most of the Burning Questions begin with "How to..." This suggests that people are searching using those words. So, should I change all my titles to start that way, or just leave them as-is?

Magnetic reactive writing pad.

I need help figuring out the best way to do the following. And i have been searching and apparently I don't know the proper way to phrase this to find the information on google/instructables. What I need -  a small surface that is magneticly reactive, to be able to Write with a magnet. It also needs to be able to be erased, probably also with a magnet.  I want it to be decently small, and I am sure there is material out there, but i don't know what it is.  And no I dont want a dry erase board.  Think of the Magnadoodle, where it would react to what is being drawn with the magnet, but i wnat something that is more like a Slate, and not a series of pockets that have a certain amount of filaments that react to the magnet.  I am sure there is some kind of material like this out there. I just dont know what to call it, and i need to be able to make it decently small and thin.  A basic idea, is like an impression pad. If you wrote something on the top sheet, or a couple of sheets of the pad, under the sheets, it would take an impression of it, (assuming it was written with a magnetic pen), you could then see what was written on the sheet originally, on the surface. Also it would need some way to be erasable so it could be used again.  A concept like carbon paper, but with magnets.  Please point me in the right direction, I am very hands on, and a long term DIYer, i just need to know what basic material i need to accomplish this. I know it exists, i just don't know what to call it.

How to Write & Submit Questions

I haven't been a member of this community very long but I've enjoyed looking at many of the posts and have learned a thing or two.  I also enjoy helping people by posting comments and answers to questions.  One thing that I've noticed is that a significant number of posters write very poor questions.   Not that the question isn't valid, but rather the phrasing or context is not clear.  Some of them remind me of the old programming axiom GIGO - Garbage in equals garbage out.  Posters don't get good responses because they didn't form a good question.  The curious would get much better answers if the questions were clear as to the information requested, the context, conditions, the desired outcome, etc.  One might start with the old "5 W's" (who, what, when, where, & why and perhaps how and how many).  A little extra effort in phrasing the question and perhaps some good manners (please & thank you) will result in better responses and more community participation.   Perhaps as a collaborative effort, would there be value in developing an instructable on how to write a question?  Not as a set of rules or a format, but as a general guide as to what information should be included.

Writing a useful bug report

From time to time, people have trouble with the Instructables site. Often they have found a bug that we need to fix. If this happens to you, here's how to tell us so we can fix it as soon as possible.Search!A lot of times the bug you found has been reported already. Do a quick search in the bug forums to see if you can find an existing report. There may be a workaround that someone has posted, or an estimated fix time. If it's already been reported, go ahead and comment on that rather than making a new report.Check, as well, if the problem is something on your system that we can't do anything about. For example, Firefox users may have installed the Greasemonkey extension, and some Greasemonkey scripts cause unexpected behavior on Instructables.Details!Provide a lot of information, including:the OS and browser you're usinga link to the page you were on, and/or the page before, where things were still OKthe error message you got, if any (copy/paste if possible)anything else you can think of that seems relevantProcess! In order to fix the problem, we have to be able to see it happen - we have to be able to reproduce it. Write a step-by-step list of the things you did to get the problem. If you don't remember exactly, try doing what you were doing again, slowly, to get the bug a second time. If you can't get it to happen again, we probably won't be able to get it to happen either. Sad but true.Patience! Some bugs may take a while to fix, either because they're very difficult, or because other bugs and features are higher priority. In general, if you can't do something you should be able to do, we'll fix it as soon as possible. Things that just look weird, or have alternate ways to be done, we'll fix later.

One of My Stories

I'm usually not one to write but...I don't know I guess I just had an idea for a story that might be good if I continued it. Right now the one below is still being worked on theres some parts that still don't sound right or are missing something. I also really shouldn't say "stories" because truly this is my only one. Anyway, just thought I'd share it. Any ideas for how to take the plot further would be greatly appreciated. Here it goes: My over-active imagination was running away with me again. I've woken up twice in the last hour to something...I can't explain the sound. I just want to sleep until morning and have been doing my best to ignore it, but it just keeps getting louder. Alright, thats it. I shoved off the covers and expertly dodged the piles of clothes that seem to grow bigger over night, to the door. Slowly, I turned the knob. It creaked. I breathed sharply through my teeth hoping nobody heard. Then again, who couldn't hear whatever that racket is? I nudged open the door and slipped into the hallway. It was dark but I wouldn't dare risk turning on the light. Luckily, the big bay window downstairs cast a light over the steps. Jeez, I never knew a house could have so many things that creaked. So I took the stairs two at a time to just cut down on noise. From where I stood, at the base of the stairs, It sounded like the noise was coming from the kitchen, though it was muffled. As I walked into the kitchen, I looked around. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Plates are still stacked up in the sink, waiting to be cleaned. The trash still needs taken out, but what's that sound? Wait, the trash...oops. I don't want that to still be here when Dad wakes up. I was supposed to take it out after dinner, well guess I'll take it out now... I bent down and jerked up the bag. It seemed heavier than normal but I didn't take that into mind. We did have a big dinner that night. I opened the back door to the night. The air was crisp and cool. It was the middle of fall and already it gets to be almost freezing at night. I shivered then walked quickly down the steps and down the sidewalk, careful to not let the bag scrape the ground. Heaving the heavy bag in the trash can, I looked around. It's been awhile since I've been up this late. I'm glad I'm usually not, it's eerie out here. Everything is quiet, there's not a person in sight, the road seems to just go on into the darkness. What makes it especially creepy though is that now that same sound is coming from the trash can in front of me. I just stood and stared. I have to see what it is. What if it is something alive and it needs help? Shakily I reached out and pulled off the lid. It fell to the ground with a loud clang, but I don't care. Now my curiosity was over coming the fear. Slowly, I reached up, untied the bag and looked inside. Then woke up. I reached down and unplugged my blaring alarm clock, not trying to even look for the button that would shut it up. Groggily, sitting up, I remembered the dream. I've been having weird dreams like that. Ever since we moved into our new...well new to us, but still old house. So I tried not to give it much thought. As I lumbered out of bed I could smell the aroma of breakfast come from the kitchen. I was hungry and the smell didn't help me whatsoever. I quickly pulled on a pair of jeans and the shirt I wore yesterday, then rushed out of my room, glancing at the mirror in the hall. Staring back at me was a kid who looked like he hadn't slept in years. My black hair was out in every direction and I had a looked like I was about to fall asleep right then and there. Well, good thing it's a Saturday! I was just starting to turn around to head downstairs when I saw my dad at the bottom of the steps holding a trash bag. "Crud", I said under my breath. I guess my dream was right... Silently I walked down the stairs. He didn't have to say a word. I took the bag out of his hands and headed out back. Lifting up the lid to the trash can I remembered my dream. What was in that bag? I looked around quickly. No one in sight. I undid the strings and looked inside the dark bag. Nothing but trash. Sigh. I almost wished there was something in there. Just to add some excitement to my week. With a dad being an ex-NAVY Sgt. He liked to keep everything on schedule and organized. for him everyday was nearly the same. Me? I'm anything but organized. Him being like that bugged me. I like change once in a while. Not just the same humdrum stuff everyday. But I'm used to it. "Matt?"-I nearly knocked over the trash can. "Are you OK?" My sister was standing beside me with a curious look on her face. I hadn't realized I had my head still in the trash bag for nearly five minutes. "Yeah, I'm fine." She still had that weird look, " Why did you have your head in the trash?" "I...uh...how 'bout you go inside and get some breakfast?" She didn't say anything. She just slowly turned around, still confused. For once she didn't keep asking me. Normally, If she asked something she wouldn't shut up until she got an answer. I shook my head. Why do I always do that? I get thinking about something and then sort of zone off. It's embarrassing sometimes, like just now. "Matt, get in here!" Bah, I did it again. I ran inside. It looked like I missed breakfast. All the plates were put up besides mine. I sighed, and then threw my plate in the microwave. “ Hey, Trash Sniffer!” I turned around , my younger brother Aaron was looking up at me grinning. “ What were you doing in the trash?” “ I was…um…thinking.” “In the trash?” “You won’t leave until you get an answer, will you?” He just stood there, still grinning. “ Fine, I was daydreaming again about a dream I had.” I glanced at him. He now had a more serious look. “ You said you didn’t have those dreams anymore.” Then I realized I shouldn’t have said that. Remembering how when I first told him about the weird dreams and how they about scared him to death. He would wake up every morning worrying about if I had a bad dream. I ended up lying to him that I didn’t have those dreams and that he helped make them go away. Now, I could tell he was already starting to worry. I quickly said, “ No, no, not one of those dreams. It was a nice one and I was just trying to remember it. “Really?” He said glancing up at me. I nodded. “Ok, I just didn’t want you to have bad dreams again.” And with that he turned and walked away. Crazy 6 year olds.
