Help! Please Donate More Common Sense!

It's not that I don't have common sense, It's because I think like this. I overthink things, when the answer is usually simple. Maybe I take things way too seriously. It probably took Brooklytonia about 20 seconds to read and figure this out... About a week ago, I uploaded an Instructable that I thought would be a HUGE hit. It wasn't. When my Instructable on Dimmable LED Workshop Lighting (Very High Efficiency) got featured in the Newsletter, it got 100K+ views. This is because it was at the top, and it was impossible to miss. When my Instructable on Insanely Bright LED Panel got featured in the newsletter, It got 40K+ views. It was at the bottom left on the email. I figured that it made sense. When my Instructable on Articulating 70W Spectrum-Balanced LED Panel got featured in the newsletter, it got ~10K views. This makes no sense! (I've changed the titles to what the staff changed them when they got featured in the newsletter. Not sure why I remember this...) Dimmable LED Workshop Lighting (Very High Efficiency) - Good title. Good thumbnail. Main Instructable - TONS of clicks - 3K views in less than 10 minutes Insanely Bright LED Panel - Okay title (not my fault!). Fairly good thumbnail. Located at the bottom left - Quite a bit of views Articulating 70W Spectrum-Balanced LED Panel - Good title. Good thumbnail*. Located in the middle. - Not a lot of clicks - 3K views in several hours. WHY? Of course there are several things that differ between Insanely Bright LED Panel and Articulating 70W Spectrum-Balanced LED Panel. But why such a difference? I mean-- I always compare the statistics of my I'bles, and try to make them better. It's usually hard to compare, and surprising. But why is there such a huge difference between two Instructables that are pretty similar? *I changed it a couple hours before it got featured in the newsletter, with the Instructables Pixlr editor. I know it turned ot a bit weird, but it was the best that I was able to do. The Pixlr site has better fonts, but the biggest on was still soooo small. Maybe I did something wrong. IDEA: Statistics for "data geeks"

Numbers motivate me. I guess I can call myself a "data geek", as some people like to call it. I remember pretty much the amount of views each one of my Instructables has, but that's not the point. I love all sorts of numbers, and I know I'm not the only one. With the new update, we can now see less numbers, which is a bit disappointing... As I wrote, numbers motivate me. I don't know if this would ever happen, but it would be nice to see what actual "achievements" we have.  For example, it would be nice if something like these, would show up in my YOU page, which I know is being updated right now: Most viewed Instructable: My most viewed Instructable is ranked the 154th most viewed on the site... Followers: I am the 67th most followed member on the site... Total views: I am the 35th most viewed member on the site... Total number of Instructables: I am ranked at number 62 as a member with the most published Instructables in total... Number of contest wins: I've won in __ contests which is the most on the whole website!... It would actually be pretty funny if one of these were actually true...

Why?: Contest, Finalists, OAE, and... WHAT?

EDIT: This has turned out to be a really long post. Please see the top comment if you don't want to read everything, or if you aren't a scanner (seriously...). I did my best to stop my longforumtopicisitis disease... I don't really know how to write this "topic". I know I'm not the only one that's a bit upset about it. I'll do my best to keep it short, but if you might get pretty confused if you don't read (almost) everything. I would really like to hear your 100% HONEST opinion. I am looking for criticism. Don't worry if your response sounds harsh. Thank you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Instructables member OAE has posted several forum topics about contest winners in the past months. I understand the fact that he is annoyed some Instructables that win in contests aren't original, aren't documented very well, and lack pictures. It does bug me a bit when these types of Instructables win, but I guess that there's normally a reason for that, since most contests don't lack entries... He also mentioned the fact that he was pretty annoyed about the fact that he doesn't win. I DO NOT want to insult him in any way, but even though his Instructables are fairly well documented, I wouldn't expect for one of his Instructables to be a finalist. Brooklyntonia wrote that "A paper airplane on a cutting mat doesn't scream click and vote.", and I agree. However, I seem to have the same (I think) problem with my Instructables, and I think that it has  just gotten a bit too much. I've won in 3 contest with 86 I'bles (think of that as 50, if you know what I mean...), which is why I feel a bit weird for "complaining". It's not that I publish Instructables just for winning in contests. Far from that. SOOOOOOOO MANY times in the past year, I have posted an Instructable that I was absolutely positive that would win in a contest, but it wasn't even a runner up! I have SO MANY! It would take me an hour to post half of them, but here are some: Articulating 70W Spectrum-Balanced LED Panel for the Lamps & Lighting Contest How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise for the Wood Contest The Flat-Pack Bandsaw for the Flat-Pack Contest (less than the others, though...) How to Build a Wooden Drill-Press Vise for the Hand-tools Only Contest 9 Unusual Tool Storage Methods for Your Workshop for the Living without Closets Contest Make Your Own Plywood Mallet! for the Plywood Contest World's Most Over-Engineered 14-in-1 Soldering Station! for the Leftovers Contest Please correct me if I'm wrong: These Instructable are featured, well documented, meet the contests requirements, contain well lit high quality photos, are original (90%, of course...). I "politely encourage" people to vote only in an Instructable that I think will win... I would understand not winning at all once or twice, but not even being a runner up even once? WHAT am I doing SO HORRIBLY WRONG? What discourages me even more is that even though I want to build something that I really need, I will wait for months until a contest opens, start making, spend a ton of time on the Instructable, and then I realise that I waited for so long, and my I'ble hasn't even won! Benne, however, even though we both publish somehow similar content, has mastered this somehow! If I make something, I have to type up the Instructable immediately, because my short term memory is pretty bad. I wrote about this a bit here. If I calm the excitement down, I might be able not to publish it right away, but that will just discourage me, since I will feel that I haven't accomplished anything (aka positive feedback, etc...). Then after waiting several months, I will publish the I'ble and still not win? Imagine your boss, at work, saying "Okay (your name), you've spent 10 hours working, but I'm going to pay you only next year. Oh, nevermind, we're having budget cuts. I'm not going to pay you at all" Wait, WHAT? WHY? I'm making this sound as if it's a bet, which is okay since you don't get "paid" from Instructables, but never getting anything at all is annoying. Also, publishing Instructables is not extremely addicting (A REAL one... ;)  I think I am following the contest guidelines, but not winning again, and again... Why? Is there something that I don't know? Thank you for reading!

An awesome website I found for sharing the tools you use in your Instructables (or for anything else!)

I recently found a free website called Kit.com, and as the name implies, it's a website for making kits of the stuff you like and useSo far, I've made a bunch of different kits such as " Dremels & Rotary Tools: All of The Accessories You Need" " My MUST Have Workshop Tools I WISH I Would've Bought Earlier!" (And several others that are organized on my Kit profile page)I think it's a pretty cool website, and encourage everyone to make their own kits of the tools and stuff they use in their projects! If you make your own kits, link them to your Instructables profile page (Like I did with Linktree), and post a comment below so can all see what you use and waste more money on tools we're sure we need! :)They also have an option for embedding the kit in a website which looks really nice (see this, though when I tried it once it looked a bit different), but unfortunately Instructables doesn't support it... (hint-hint!)You can also create an affiliate code, so when people buy through the links, you earn a few percent of the sale, which is pretty cool too!Maybe unrelated, Kit was just acquired by Patreon so if you read this in the future it might not be free. I have no idea. Also, if you're an SEO genius you need to tell me how to make it so my kits rank on Google!Post a comment if you make one!

BUG: New Comment Email: Incorrect link?

Weird bug report here. I recently commented on this Instructable. When the author had replied, I got an email, as usual. The weird thing about the email is that the link that was posted (see screenshot in top comment), was to THIS Instructable WHAT? Further investigation: If you type https://www.instructables.com/id/Pallet-wood/ into the Google search bar, it'll automatically ocrrect it to https://www.instructables.com/id/Pallet-wood-desk/ . Could this have happened because it looks like the link was posted incorrectly in the email?

The indestructable bike lock! ...Idea

The indestructable bike lock: the forum topic that was posted undeniably just to annoy the future patenters! So I had this weird idea for a product come out of nowhere. Y'know how aluminum is supposed to make cutting wheels on an angle grinder gum up, stick, and shatter - when trying to cut it, that is? I was wondering, what if a company engineered a special type of aluminum alloy or a similar material that would do just that: gum up abrasive cutting wheels and make them stick/bind and shatter. Then like with layers of plywood, it would be sandwiched together with hardened steel, in the shape of a U-lock bike lock, making it: Impossible to cut through with a hacksaw, reciprocating saw, TCT bladed portaband , because it's hardened and would wreck the teeth. Impossible to cut through with an angle grinder or rotary tool with an abrasive wheel because the aluminum would gum it up. Impossible to cut through it with bolt cutters - obviously... Impossible to freeze it with freezing gas? I don't know. I heard that's what thieves do. Maybe that aluminum alloy would be a super-insulator and wouldn't allow the hardened steel layer to freeze and become more brittle?I think it might just be invincible until the portable cordless battery powered waterjet is invented!Thoughts?

Free PRO Membership Membership for members that make my I'bles (IGNORE THIS)

You should probably ignore this forum topic if you've come here through the forums. I normally give out free PRO memberships to members that make a project that I've show how to make in one of my Instructables, and share pictures... I can't really find a place where it fits in the Instructables, and normally post it as a top comment, but I don't like that - It can make replying to commentators a bit confusing sometimes... I've decided to post the "rules" here, and link this forum topic in the Instructable. This would also be interesting how many people are actually interested in one... ▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼▼ So... Do you want a FREE PRO Membership? Here's what you have to do to be able to receive a free premium membership to Instructables: 1. Follow me on Instructables (recommended!) 2. Post a comment (Don't forget to click "I Made It!") with pictures of your finished project, along with explanations, or anything else that you'd like. Don't forget to let me know that you'd actually like to receive one. 3. Nothing! I will PM you the free code! ▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲▲ What type of code will I send you in the PM? If you are the first one - For big projects, particularly ones that I'm really proud of, I'll send you a full 1 year membership. For smaller ones, I'll send you a 3-month membership. If you aren't the first one - Big projects: 3-month membership. Small projects: I haven't decided, and it depends, though it will probably be only a patch. If you want to know if I'm giving away a membership in an specific I'ble, click "CTRL/Cmnd F" and type in "membership", since I normally write about them in the intro, last step, or in a top comment. Keep in mind that they've already given them away in some I'bles... :) I currently am able to give several years worth of pros. There also isn't a limit to the amount of PRO's that you can get :)

Submit Projects that I'll Make! (UPDATED w/ Giveaway!) - Yonatan24

Request a project that I can make!  As of now, I have around 150 project ideas waiting to be built and "Instructablized", and I was wondering if anyone else has an a project that they want me to build, since I'm always on the lookout for more awesome projects! You can, and should submit a project that you just want to see if: 1. You have an awesome idea of a project I can make, and document as an Instructable 2. You want to see if it's possible for it to even be made 3. You don't know how to start making a project you want to make You can submit any possible project subject, but the highest chance of me making if will be if it's related to Making My Own Tools, Woodworking, Metalworking, LED's & Electronics, Organization, Unusual Uses/Tips/Tricks/"Hacks", And Much More! I will provide full "Step-by-Step" instructions in the Instructable. Please keep in mind there might be some projects that I will be able to make and upload in less and a day, and some that might take weeks, because I might have to order parts & components online, which can delay the making in several weeks... I will also be posting pictures of all sorts of junk that I find here in the comments, and I'd be happy if you could help me think of projects that I could make with them :) BONUS: If I win in a contest with your submitted project idea, I'LL SEND YOU A FREE 1 YEAR PRO MEMBERSHIP! (In case you came here through the forums, this Forum Topic has been linked from My Instructables Page)

Vises, The Instructables' Newsletter, & Top 5's

This is a forum topic that I've been wanting to publish for the past week, but I wasn't able to because of a bug. 18 emails to service later, here I am: I recently published two Instructables: How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise, and Top 10 Vise Hacks!. After being featured in the newsletter, How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise got ~20K views, and Top 10 Vise Hacks. got ~50K views. Now that makes no sense (to me. Wouldn't someone that was interested in an Instructable about tips, tricks, and hacks for your vise wouldn't be interested in how to make a vise? 1.5X more? That makes no sense... (I would think that there would be a difference of 10-20%, but 200%?) Also, speaking of the newsletter, it would be awesome to receive an email at the end of the year, that shows the most viewed Instructables that were posted this year. This could be a nice feature... In my opinion, the thumbnail for How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise was taken on a white background and is really good, and the thumbnail for Top 10 Vise Hacks doesn't have text, and isn't very good. I think you'll agree with me on this... After the views from the newsletter had started to slow down to about 1000 every day, Top 10 Vise Hacks was featured again, in the "top 5 most viewed Instructables of the week" which has brought it to 98K views already. Does that mean that SO MANY people have missed it from the newsletter? That's also weird... Another thing is that my Instructable on How to Build a Wooden Drill-Press Vise has a fairly good thumbnail, and was put on the Homepage. However, my Instructable on How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise wasn't, while I think the thumbnail is WAAAY better.  What do you think? :)
