I think you are talking about a ring counter. This 4017 integrated circuit does four sequential switches as evidenced by the LED lighting one at a time. The 555 timer generates regular pulses that step the LED sequence.
This same 4017 IC can do a sequence of two to ten as easily or did you want a bunch of transistors, capacitors, resistors and diodes wired instead ? A
