Adafruit Gemma not programming? Answered

I have an Adafruit Gemma, not an actual Arduino, and it won't program. I select the Gemma as the board and as the programmer, press the reset button, the red LED flashes, but after the sketch is compiled it says "avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x2341/0xc9f)"

You need to perform an extra step to your Arduino software to use the Adafruit Gemma (the Arduino Gemma works a little more seamlessly). The additional step required is linked in the supplies list, project instructions, and here again:

Then you'll select "Adafruit Gemma" as your Board type and "USBtinyISP" as your Programmer. More info about Adafruit Gemma:
