Advertisements Answered

Some of these new ads are incredibly obnoxious.  When I came to the site today, I was greeted with a rather loud recording of "Wouldn't It Be Nice", that wouldn't go away until I managed to find the tiny gray X on a slightly lighter gray bar, on the bottom of the screen.  Now there's one from the Washington Sports Club that expands to three times its normal size whenever I mouseover it - and it's right below the topic bar.  This is obnoxious; if these horribly intrusive advertisements continue, I will definitely stop using this site.  I've been a fan for years, but this is just too much.

...and now that I look around a bit more, that expanding ad is on just about every single page.  Get rid of it, please.

I'bles doesn't create these ads.  They contract with "distributors" (Google AdSense is one, but not the only one) who pass-through both global and locally-tuned advertisements.

The "Washington Sports Club" you mention sounds like a local, which other users and Staff aren't necessarily going to see.

There is a way you can provide more detailed information, which I'bles can use to help tune away some of the more intrusive stuff.  A few months ago, there was a problem with their ad distributors passing through viruses(!), which took a while to track down.  Eric added a comment in that thread with a Firefox add-on you can use to identify the ad servers.

If you're willing to use that, you can pass on to Staff (e-mail StumpChunkman) which ad server is giving the most obnoxious ads, and they can decide what to do about it.

Yeah, I just take issue with the fact that Instructables doesn't screen their ads for potential obnoxiousness.

Perhaps you assume that Instructables is a giant corporation with hundreds of employees?  Check out the About page, and figure out which of the dozen Staff might have time to do that?  Or maybe you'd like the job?

They couldn't possibly - there's sooooooooo many ads put out by the distributors. As Kelsey said, many are local - they surely can't vet all of those!
