Are Spammers following me via Instructables.com ? Answered

I am an Instructables Pro member and I have never posted an instructable.

So, I'm always curious when another Instructables members decides to "follow" me. Why are they following me when I never submit anything?

I recently received e-mail from Instructables that I am being followed by The California Business Directory.

I love Instructables but the possibility that my membership information is being exploited for business purposes or used to send me unsolicited advertising is very disturbing.

Please advise.

If you post your personal email address in plain text, you certainly run the risk of attracting any number and manner of spammers.

We do get spammers here, but they have no access to your personal information (unless you post it for all to see...). Most spammers don't follow anybody, some work in teams and follow each other, and some follow a pretty random group of proper members, probably to try and gain some credibility as "proper" members before they start spamming. As well as following you, CBD are also following some members of HQ staff.

If you suspect somebody us a spammer (and, I agree, CBD has the stink all over it), then just drop an email to service@instructables.com, and they'll check it out for you.

The most someone can do, whether they are following you or not, is PM or comment to you directly on the site. If they do so, and it isn't caught in our filters, please let us know by flagging or PMing us so we can get rid of them.

The only information about you they can get is anything you have already posted openly to the community. We never give out or post peoples private information for spammers to get ahold of.
