Melamine laminate is great, and so is any structure lined with acrylic or silicone. Smooth-On will work, but the finish quality will depend on the smoothness of your application.

Concrete molds are usually urethane rubber because it is much stronger and cheaper than silicone rubber. This matters a lot on larger molds. Smooth-On sells all kinds of rubber you can pour or paint on, so does PolyTek and others. You will get the same surface texture in your rubber mold as the original [pattern] had. As a rubber mold ages, the surface slowly degrades. You should get 60 casts from a decent mold before it goes south.
