Making a food and water dish stand out of a skateboard. What is the best water based water protectant and still safe for the dog to seal the wood on the skateboard itself??

Guess I should have been more specific... The underside of the board has graphics that are "mod podged" onto the wood. I will be cutting 2 holes approximately 5 inches in diameter into the board and I need to seal those holes. they will be under the rim of the bowl, but I still want to seal the wood and and have it be pet friendly. The picture I uploaded did not show up as an example of what the planned finish product will look like.

Go with the varnish then.

Coat the board with a clear polyurethane varnish. It is waterproof and durable. When the polyurethane has cured, it is perfectly safe even if your dog happens to swallow a small bit of it.
