Biology question?
My neighbour cut down a tree last year, down to the ground. This year it sprouted shoots again from the cut edge.
My question is by what mechanism did the remains of the tree "know"
1. It had been cut off and should produce new shoots if it wanted to survive,
2. When to start producing these shoots.
i realise it is triggered by day length and temperature rising BUT how does the tree measure these things?

It is triggered by plants trying to take over our planet.
Even a full blown tree will make suckers.
There are sucker from subterrestrial tree roots.
I am trimming these unauthorized buds for mankind every year :-)

These shoots come from the edge of the cut bark not from the roots.
However the mechanism still remains a mystery.
