Black is the new Green Answered

It seems today http://www.google.com/ turned it's lights out. I though it was an early April Fools but apparently its time for Earth Hour (which everyone should participate). My physics teacher has a black desktop background on his laptop to save battery life. I always tell his it doesn't work and that it might even do the opposite. We all know that for backlit displays this does not save any energy but does it waste energy? Anyone care to comment.

PS. I admire Google for its Community service. I wish government was more like it.

I will be participating in Earth Hour today, and I encourage many others to do the same.

Your teacher's background only saves energy on the old tube screens (crt). On an lcd, like the one in his laptop it doesn't make much of a difference. Sure, it uses a little more, but its not noticeable

I believe it's a symbolic gesture to draw attention to Earth Hour. A little PR if you will, rather than an actual energy saving measure....
