Security Camera that sees through clothing.
Reuters: LONDON--A British company has developed a camera that can detect weapons, drugs or explosives hidden under people's clothes from up to 25 meters away in what could be a breakthrough for the security industry.

It doesn't appear like it sees just anything "under the clothing" but rather metalic objects and such (ah hah ! So THAT'S where you put that ring LOL).

Oh, i know. But it's still creepy they anyone walking around with a camera could see just what you've got in your pockets.

You do know that the antique camera I pictured is not THE camera, right ? :-) The machinery might be a little bit greater in size (couldn't find a picture in the article)

Yes, but as with all technology, it will get smaller over time. And eventually, if interest develops in it, at some point it could get to a size that the person right next to you on the street may be able to see who's got what in their pockets.

The technology works on the basis that all people and objects emit low levels of electromagnetic radiation. Terahertz rays lie somewhere between infrared and microwaves on the electromagnetic spectrum and travel through clouds and walls.

Wasn't there a big brouhaha about something similar in the US? An ir camera that could 'see threw clothing'?

But that was a straight through the clothes thing. This uses T rays, and doesn't show any personal features. It just identifies objects as a whole.

Yeah, if this is absorbed rather then reflected by one's person, that would tend to be better as far as what was being shown.

The THz stuff is old news (as far as the UK is concerned) - the original furore was mis-informed tabloid stuff.
The camera can't see through stuff, it merely detects specific "colours" of THz light. Metals reflect/emit one colour, explosives another.
On a simplistic level, security staff will be looking at a screen; "Her handbag's glowing red - she's got a big lump of steel in there, best check it out."

Sounds like it's an emitted source that's detected, but one that can be blocked by metal or water. I doubt that anything emits a signal as strong as a 'color', and that there are going to be lots of false positives and times that someone wasn't looking for the right thing. Most likely, it will read like a spectroscope-and be as difficult to read.

wow...way to feel safe. I woul feel less secure walking in a place secured with these lol. Maybe it only goes through the first layer? If so hopefully your wearing underpants of some kind.

Um, this one would "see" metals (so if you took your iron tablets that morning...watchout) and maybe bodily outline but certainly not a clear picture of the body itself.

That is wild, thanks for the link. Certainly no one will be toting a particle accelerator around with them, so we have no fear of long distance spying with this technology (at least, so far).
And it doesn't look like anyone will be making one in their basement any time soon either. *sigh* oh well.

So it's pretty much an x-ray that will go over mid-ranged distances? Is that a picture of the camera or just an antique camera?
