WATCH the dog. It will give signs it is going to go - when this happens pick it up and take outside to where you need it to go. After a while it will do this automatically understanding it doesn't go inside.

IF it has accidents DON'T punish it the dog will have no memory or understanding what the punishment if for and will just learn to distrust you.

You will do best at training by being totally consistent, use treats to reward the dog, they are very food oriented. If you don't want or can't buy treats make your own, very small (1/4 inch square) bits of liver baked in the oven until they are hard and dry will be most welcome as they smell strongly to the dog.

Always take outside after meals and at regular times otherwise. Patting and vocal praise will also be welcome to the dog. It wants to trust you, follow you and sees you as the pack leader (if you do it right) this will make it obedient and well behaved.

  • A second dog helps reduce work load 50%.
  • Always take dog out after a meal or drink and first thing in the morning..
  • Certain dog types train faster then others. Yorkies take months to a Poodle in a week.
  • Crate dog at night is a super idea with milk-bone dog treat to make it fun to go in.
  • Punish only if dog bites you.
  • Time spent now will be worth much more then the effort later.
  • Its OK to put nose into poop and pee just to remind before being put outside.
  • Dogs live in the present of now.
  • What happened 2 minutes ago is the long forgotten past.
  • A puppie training class is well worth the cost.
  • A daily walk with your dog on a leash is where your dog gets to be your Buddie and friend.
  • A dog door is a lot easier on everyone.
I like your blue nails :-)

It is NEVER okay to rub a poor puppy's nose in poop or pee. They then don't want to use the bathroom, because they asscociate it with getting their noses rubbed in poop or pee. Not going to the bathroom can lead to health problems, big time, which means being in debt up to your eyeballs with the vet, or possibly losing your pet, probally.

OK, I didn't say rub, and I should have said " to " instead of into.

The puppy is not being punished.

Just allowed to smell excrement on the way out,
as a message to do more of it outside !

Sorry, I guess I read it wrong. In other words, you put the puppy's nose above it and let it sniff it, and give it a treat? That sounds like it would work- I might try it when my puppy, Bailey, gets weaned. She's still with her mommy, Dale =)

I highly recommend the books Dogs For Dummies and Dog Training for Dummies. I hate the titles, but they are an excellent resource.

A puppy class at your local dog-traiing center will help you learn to train your dog and help socialize the dog at the same time. It is well worth the time and money.

There are MANY online resources you should look at because there is no simple "do this" sort of answer; but in general, correct bad behaviors as they happen, reward good behavior and be consistent and repetitive.
