I'm no electronics guru, but given the voltage involved in this project, I don't think that the diode specs matter that much. Pretty much anything you find in the $2.79 Radio Shack assortment pack should work. You might want to verify that, though.
One thing I do know is that you shouldn't solder directly to batteries like the instructable recommends.
You might consider reading Step 1. The parts are listed there. Print it out, walk into you neighborhood electronics parts store (Radio Shack is not an electronics parts store, by the way) and show them the printout.

Looks like everything is spec'd reasonably well except for the rectifier diode. Which parts are you getting hung up on?

yeah, i dont know about the Rectifier Diode and the 1M resistor. what does 1m mean?

oh it means 1 mega ohm, but im still unsure about the Rectifier Diode.
