Can you back up a computer like you would a smartphone? Answered

You can back up smartphones completely, files applications and i think sometimes settings.
You can also back up computer files.

But can you back up computer applications? some applications aren't portable.. :-/

Sure, but it's not as simple just because the amount of storage required is huge. You can make an image of your hard drive, and save it onto another, presumably larger, drive, using appropriate software. You can then restore that image back to the original drive if necessary. Since it's bit for bit identical, all of the applications etc. will work just as before.

The previous to answers are the same thing. A ghost-image is essentially a copy of your hard disk. If it fails you can replace it and copy the image onto the new drive, if it becomes corrupted you can scrub the drive and copy the image back.
It's common in large companies where all their machines are clones, new PCs get the same image (rather than wasting time installing and configuring stuff) old ones get refreshed similarly.

Norton Ghost is perhaps the best known software for doing this.
