Depending on what it is you're trying to do, and your linux-related expertise, another good alternative might be the Sheevaplug

a laptop can do almost anything an arduino can - except fit in an altoids tin. You may need extra hardware to 'sense' things, as computers tend to interact at the application layer of control - where the arduino is pretty much limited to hardware layer.

...that said - answer a question with a question - what is your application? perhaps a 50 watt laptop is a bit overkill...
