Can you use the cables from your dish to hook up an antenna Answered

Thank you all for your iinput,  I managed to get the antenna installed yesterday.  I was hoping I would be able to hook into the directtv multi switch but ended up having to purchase a new splitter...but the cable did indeed work and I have AWESOME reception.  Yay for free TV!

You probably can, but if your new antenna doesn't have a coaxial connection you'll need an impedence matching transformer between the cable and the antenna (much like you need one between coax and an older TV set's screw-type antenna terminals). There'll be a bit of signal strength lost in going through the transformer, but unless you're out on the fringes it will probably work well enough.

If the new antenna uses coaxial cable, then you can use these wires with no problem.  They're actually a little more heavily-shielded than regular coaxial cable, so they tend to have better noise rejection.
