Comment Notifications Answered

As you know, we're always updating the site to try and improve it for you. Sometimes we go a bit overboard... Recently we changed how you're notified when someone comments on an Instructable you wrote, or a forum you started, or replied to a comment you wrote, etc. People were getting a ton of emails, each with just one comment in it. So we created the ability to bundle these up into just one email, which you can get hourly or daily (or not at all). (Oh, and you can still get individual emails if you prefer - just update your user settings to suit you.) All well and good! But there was a small problem deep in the guts of the notification code, wherein it periodically skipped notifying some people of some comments, some of the time. Since a lot of people were getting notifications normally, it took a while to figure this out. I just fixed it... and there were a LOT of old comments that hadn't been sent yet, that just went out all at once! At least one user got notified of 93 comments. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that that was a backlog, and not normal, and going forward you should only have the one hour's worth, or one day's worth, depending on how you've set up your account.

I would really like to be able to turn notifications off for selected threads. If I comment on an instructable, I'd to be able to individually opt in or out of notifications for that specific thread, without applying those settings to all the other notifications I might receive. Any possibility of this in the future?

We have had a couple requests for this feature, so yes it's definitely on our radar. We don't have a timeframe for it yet, however. I'll try to remember to let you know when it gets scheduled :)

It looks like I'm not getting comment emails. I checked the notification settings, which are right.

I know this post is old, but it's the closest thing I can find to a problem I'm having- namely I haven't been getting notifications in my profile when people comment on my instructables. It says my last comment was December 1, yet there are several comments from after that time. Here's the problem: I had someone comment on my instructable in a negative.... err, constructive manner. :) I believe the criticism is fair, and didn't delete/flag/lock or anything else. However, several other people have reacted quite harshly to his comment, and I'd like to make sure that anything people are replying stay within the spirit of the site. Any and all help is appreciated.

I accidentally marked comment responses as spam once, and a few days later, I had about 100 emails from you guys that I had missed.

I like getting a bunch of emails every day...it makes me feel special =] (It also helps to get notified instantly if I'm having a conversation with someone)

The "93 comments" was me - should I be pleased at stirring up responses, or sad that I spend so much of my life here?

Great thanks Rachel! I was curious about this because I was getting comments, but none of which came through in an email. Thanks for fixing it!
