Cooking contest Answered

drinkmorecoffee's instructable on cooking got me thinking... I think that our next mini contest should be a cooking contest. The rules being that you make something you've never made before, but without using a recipe. So instead of getting a pomodoro sauce recipe online, you make it yourself, using what you think it needs, and then make an instructable on how to make it. Of course you can use the basic sponge recipe like drinkmorecoffee provides, but from there you make it your own. What do you think?

Well, the contest is up:

Have Fun!

A little clarification: basically, I just want them to be things you've never made before, and not from a recipe. For instance, my brother is in morocco for six weeks. He's sending us alot of pictures of their cuisine. If I were to attempt to make something like a food in the pictures, that would be acceptable.

So you are saying is that rather than a normal chocolate chip cookie, you should make your new spin on the chocolate cookie, like a chocolate chip, bananna nut cookie or something like that.

Yeah, that'd be great. Really, I just want the instructable to be something new to you also. Like trying to replicate a dish you had somewhere else would be cool.

So people would post things that didn't work, as well as things that did?

Of course you don't put up things if they taste badly..

That's not what I meant.... Just 'cause something doesn't work it doesn't mean it tastes bad... I think it would be good for people to document the whole process, and tell us what they did/didn't do, and what others should do differently.

I think that they could include what didnt work, but still put up a good way to make it. Who wants to read an instructable on how not to make peach cobbler?

True... what doesn't work should be included, and not take up an entire instructable... But definitely included.... Hmmm... This could be fun!

I really like to make up cooking as I go, so I'd probably do something for a contest like this.

I would do the same because I have a pretty sick Hot Chocolate Recipe made from when I went through my spice closet.

I'd be into that - I love hot chocolate and spices. You'd have my attention, anyway _

Sweet!
I like that idea!
Glad I got SOMEONE thinking... ;-)
I think a better idea than having people make up a recipe off the top of their heads, would be to have them post an original recipe. I think people would be more comfortable with that.... I would be fine either way, but I know some people would just lose interest if they had to make one up as they went along... just what I think, I'll participate either way.

I'll ask one of the squid labs people, if they dont want to have it, we can do it as an unofficial contest, between whoever wants to do it. With the prize being bragging rights :D

I like the idea. :) What do you think of running it as a "recipe hack" contest, with the idea being to either reverse engineer a dish you like (this can involve consulting actual recipes) and/or doing a mod/variant on a recipe. The point being to put your own spin on it in some way, not just put up a tried-and-true classic..

Yeah, a recipe hack would be good. I'd just like it to be something new to them too, not their grandmothers chocolate chip cookies, like you said.

Kinda hard to prove that it's a "new" recipe :p Especially considering there's things I've never made myself, but I've watched others make -- and surely can remake from memory :p To be honest, that's how I pick up new skills :p

Yeah, I was thinking of that, it would have to be mainly on the honor system, and most people here are pretty trust worthy as far as I can tell. The recipe doesn't have to be something totally new and wacky, just your own take on making something. And that's why it'd be a mini contest, no big special prizes, maybe just an instructables shirt.
