Could you simply replace the sparkgap in a tesla coil with an amplifier circuit to allow the coil to play music? or if that would be too high voltage, put the amplifier circuit before the first transformer?

Have you looked into electronic resonance at Radio Frequency ?

Then you understand the Tesla operates at several magnitudes of
frequency above our low audio frequencies.
The RF currents prefer to flow on the outside of conductors like your skin
rather then through your muscles and blood like lightning strikes do..
That is why these high frequency Tesla coils do not kill you as lightning would.

You can use audio signals to turn the Tesla RF ON-Off-ON in time to
the predominant audio sound transitions and the On arc off arc noise will
appear to syncopate the audio control.

Be Extremely careful to never ever substitute the audio for the RF
because that frequency range has no skin affect to protect you from
having your blood boiled in your  own body !!
