Windows Media Player only supports AVI, WMV, MPG, ASF.

To play MP4 in Windows Media Player, you may try this method from

http://www.idealshare.net/video-converter/windows-...

This method also helps to play FLV, FLASH files, MKV, AVCHD, VOB, WebM etc on Windows Media Player.

So far, WMP supports playing AVI files except FLV and MP4.

In order to play MP4 and FLV in WMP, you'd better to convert MP4 and FLV to WMP compatible formats.

Window's Media Player does not support MP4, FLV
It only supports AVI, WMV, ASF, MP3, WAV, WMA.

In order to play all kinds of video formats to Windows Media Player, a recommend solution is to convert them to Windows Media Player more compatible AVI, WMV.

iDealshare VideoGo is just the right Windows Media Player
Converter which can convert all kinds of Windows Media Player unsupported format like MOV, VOB, MP4, WTV, MKV, WebM, RMVB, FLV, 3GP, MXF, AVCHD, FLAC, APE, OGG, 3GA, M4A, DTS, RA, VOC, M4R, and etc to WMP supported video or audio format.

Windows's Media Player can stream avi and mp4 files well, but it seems that it cant supports flv flash video, you should install k-codec or convert them.
I always convert flv files to a more common file like mp4 to play on Windows Media Player. Check the source: How to convert .flv to .mp4 on Mac or Windows
