Does the ceiling cause interefence for cell phones? Please help? Answered

I have noticed that when my cell phone rings and I'm in the building (with ceiling), the signal is interrupted every so often. However, when I go outside, the signal is clear. What else could cause intereference in cell phones?

How often are you in buildings without a ceiling? see ZEROGX

I'm guessing he means false or suspended ceilings.

If he does mean suspended ceilings, I'd say "potentially, yes", since there is a lot of metal strung up above a suspended ceiling.

There's a frame yes. In such buildings you might also have a steel frame or reinforced concrete too?

Indeed.

Plus aluminium flashings and sidings, metallised glass, and poorly-installed electrical equipment broadcasting across most of the spectrum.

Them too. Stand on the roof?

I think the author's "outside" option is probably safer...

Some buildings have corrugated metal roofs that can interfere with reception, and worse are those that are built as pole barns, both roofed and sheathed with metal

Lots of commercial buildings have roofs that are made of sheet metal.  That pretty much stops a signal from the top.  The walls may have metal only where the col's. are and wood, masonry, insulation and sheetrock spanning between them, or they may be sheeted in metal also.  again if sheeted then the signal is going to be pretty well attenuated.

If you're having trouble in one spot move a few feet to the side and you may bet better reception.

Agreed with Zerogx and lemonie - cel phones don't get their signal (99.99% of the time) from satellites.  It comes from towers, and unless your tower is right next to your building, you're getting signal almost horizontally.

Walls and crap in them blocks signal.

it probably is going to be the walls mostly. you will get better reception by windows. the thicker materials in the wall parts, combined with the metal a/c ducts, power/data lines and whatever else just kills signal.
