I want to use them in an "easy button" hack - is there some sort of circuit I can build to increase the current? (Obviously I'm on the new side here.) thanks

It depends. Six 1.5V button cells, or three 3V lithium coin cells, will happily provide 9V, but they won't be able to provide as much current as the usual 9V alkaline battery. A lot of 9V applications don't use MUCH current anyway, but others do. Of course the button cells contain less total energy (being smaller), so they wouldn't last as long, even if they provide enough current for the device.

Oh, yes you are quite correct ( I almost answered by asking what he was doing with a dumb battery; glad you answered first so I didn't look foolish :-)
