Exploding color pigments - need ideas to make Answered

Hello everyone,

I am working on a film project and I need to make small explosions of colored pigments and/or powder. Below is a link to a few sample photos of the affect that I am trying to achieve.

I have tried many different techniques from impact to compressed air. But I am not getting the shapes that I am looking for. I am thinking  that the best technique might be some sort of controlled explosion. This could be something detonated within a pile of the powder or potentially (and more complicated) and fully concealed shell that includes the powder.

I will primarily be shooting straight down above the powder so it really only needs to explode up and out. And again, these are relatively small blasts. I would estimate the powder blasts in the images from the link are only approximately 2' in width at the most.

And help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, kremer.

I just sent you a private message on this.

Hope it goes well. if I can help further, private messages might be best due to the high potential for injury if the wrong 6 year old reads this thread. :)

I may be able to do the effect for you. Having done stuff like this for years, well decades, I've a bit of expertise on safety as well as getting the look you want. Part of that expertise is from reading, part of it from close calls, part of it from other's mishaps, injuries, etc. I have trepidations about sharing skills that could easily lead to injury if the safety aspect is not understood.

I'm in San Francisco. Unless you're local and can work quick we probably don't have time at this point as we are shooting this weekend.

I'm not in the area. Is the effect on camera with the main action? If not, it can be filmed at another location.

Also, while the original stills were probably taken by flash, while the shutter may have been open for a second, for film, a high speed camera is likely needed.

This is the main action. We are filming it at 1000fps at 4K. We figured out a good option using pvc pipe with a cap and an inner projectile power by compressed air. I still think a small detonation might be a better option to get the types of bursts that I really want. But this seems to be working really well. I'll update the thread with the result soon.

My first thought would be to surgically open a party popper and pack it with coloured powder (poster paint?), similar to what I did with flour in step 9 here:

I did not pack the flour very tightly, but you should be able to do so when you're firing straight up.
