For drivers who leave their SUVs idling -- can we make a remote control that will shut off their engines ? Answered

Some drivers leave their cars idling.. many times unattended.  They are getting lousy gas mileage and adding carbon needlessly to the environment.

Can we deliver some kind of kinetic energy to the vehicle that will cause the engine to shut off without endangering anyone?

I'm thinking this would be a remote control device... Just point and click.... and the engine stops running until the driver shows up and starts the car again.

Oh, if only cars had an infrared receiver... ;)

But no, there isn't really anything you can do to shut off the car. At best, you can carry around a pack of fliers to slide under their wiper blade, denouncing them for being so selfish and wasteful.

. No electronics required. A potato in the tail pipe will bring the engine to a halt - or expel the potato at high speed.

Isn't that the turbo timer that keeps everything turning over until the turbo charger is sufficiently cooled so it won't cook the lube/bearings, and then cuts out automatically?

As frollard says, not without damaging the car.

1) impossible without damaging the car
2) illegal

If you REALLY want to go for it, open the door and turn the keys off, or hit the brake pedal. This should kill most remote started engines. By the way, this is unlawful entry, so this too is illegal.

You could write an assertive note and put it under their windshield wiper telling them good reasons not to idle their engines... Less likely to get you stabbed, shot, or arrested. (let alone beaten within an inch of your life).
