Going postal! Answered

We had a parcel delivered today (somebody has been buying shoes again).  When I opened the door to the courier, he handed me the gadget to sign for the parcel, glanced up, and said Oh! Instructables!

I was, of course, wearing my robot t-shirt.

He was busy, so our chat was necessarily brief, but he admitted to being a member, but using the site as more of a spectator sport than a resource.  In his words; "My god, what have they built now??"

It is quite peculiar to find the places where I find fans of the site, and where I don't.

I have been a supply teacher for the last couple of years, and I reckon I've met a couple of thousand high school kids in that time.  I typically wear a Robot pin badge, and occasionally it gets recognised by kids.  They've typically been using the site as a resource for their own hobbies, mainly in three areas - making knives, building K'NEX guns or cosplay costumes.

In that same time, I've met dozens of teachers of the kinds I would expect to be big fans of Instructables - DT ("shop") and Science teachers, but only one Science teacher (if he's reading this, hello Cliff!) had heard of the site (he used it to build a set of video game cabinets), and none of the DT teachers had (a situation I quickly fixed).

That's it really, just making a couple of observations, unless you'd like to mention the oddest time you encountered an instructabler or instructables reference?

Oh, and I forgot to ask the courier what his user name is, so, if you delivered a pair of shoes to a chap in a navy Robot t-shirt, please let me know.

I was at a 3D design class and the instructor mentioned Instructables. I was surprised as I didn't think there many people who knew about Instrctables.

Weirdest one for me was when one of my students was describing a Catan board he'd built... turns out it was based on mine.

I was actually on a hike with my girlfriend on a lovely fall day last year when seamster and I happen to be wearing matching robot t-shirts. We got to chatting over the last few months and he's helped me here and there with a project or two. It truly is amazing how close this community can be while being so spread apart.
