There are a lot of decent digital cameras in this price range. It depends on what you want to do with it. Macro-closeup shots? Action photos with no blur? HD movie capability? Low-light goodness? Best advice is to go to the store where they have a selection and see how they feel. Size and being able to comfortably frame a shot with the viewscreen while holding it will determine if you will enjoy using the camera. Also, having the mega-megapixels does not translate into a better camera. Good luck.

If you want a "pro" type camera, you can get a used Canon 10D with lens for under $150.

I like my mom's Fujifilm Finepix, and you can find used ones on eBay within your price range. Example.
