You probably don't need the CAD, just draw out the letters fancifully, then cut them in to 3 pieces, cut, and put together at the place.
It wasn't until right at the end that I clicked that this wasn't you getting engaged!
As for the months of planning, he may not have such free access to laser cutters as certain other people, plus there's booking the slot at the gallery, subtly inviting friends, avoiding the suspicious rush...

Ah yes, I added a note about that. Good point. All the planning does take time. As for the laser-cutter, I think he has school access to it.
