Hamster-powered ventilation system? Answered

I'm in the process of expanding my hamsters cages and because of the design, I'm not able to leave the top open to allow better air circulation like I'd prefer.
The cage is made out of plexi glass with ventilation holes on both sides and I found a post somewhere about using a computer fan behind one end of the cage to increase air flow. Is there any way to wire it so it turns on when the hamster runs on the wheel/at a random time?

Just add the encoder wheel and sensor from an old ball mouse to the hamster wheel.
It is nothing more than an opto coupler, so you wire the LED to 5V and the output to a little transistor that switches the 12V for the fan.
Hmaster runs, fan spins, Hamster runs faster, fan spins faster - so get him to train properly like the kamels in the desert....

You could a micro switch under the frame of the hamster wheel. Might take a bit of fiddling to get right, But once the hamster hops on his body weight trips the switch, he jumps off the switch turns off

Please Kiteman this is not a cartoon.

Sure a couple hundred ways from weight switches to motion sensors.

Do you use Arduino?

Why not just add fan-blades to the wheel?
