Help needed making a pause system for smartphone headphones Answered

Hi guys,

I'd like to take an existing pair of headphones (not a specific pair, I can buy a suitable pair if this will make things easier) and implement a switch that will automatically pause my android music when a switch is pressed. Specifically, I'd like the music to pause when a circuit is broken. Since Android will automatically pause music when the headphone jack is removed I can't imagine this would be too difficult to build. However I would also like the music to automatically start again when the circuit is closed again. I'm not overly tech savvy but I think this project is within the realm of my capabilities! Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated!

Regards,

Tig

The function of pausing music when you unplug your headphones is a combination of the jack itself and the programming of the music player. In the headphone jack is a small switch that gets tripped when you plug in the headphones. This is how the phone knows to switch the audio over to the headphones and away from the speaker(s). That same switch tells the phone when the headphones have been unplugged allowing sound to be transferred back to the speakers. In the case of the audio player it reads the disconnection as a need to pause the audio. You would have to change the programming of the audio software to play when it detects the connection of headphones. You would also have to open the phone up to piggyback off the built in switch on the jack to make your pause/play switch.

If we where talking about an iPhone then you could use the functionality of the 30 pin data connector to add your switch. A much easier and less invasive process. Heck you could build your own wired remote off that thing. No such luck since Android phones use a basic USB port for data transfers and have no additional functionality available on most models like the older iPhones have through there 30 pin connector.

if the default music app does not have an option to automatically resume playing when reconnecting the headphones then there is an app I use called musixmatch that I know has the option. wiring a switch into the headphones should be easy all you need to do is cut one of the wires and solder a simple on off switch to break the circuit, I would recommend getting some heat shrink tubing to cover everything up. just be careful because headphone wires are always really annoying to solder with for some reason. good luck!
