GuardianFox's idea might work. Commercial-made walkie talkies are subject to FCC approval, which limits transmitter power, which limits the range. Directly modifying the electronics may result in FCC trouble (though they'll likely never find out). A bigger antenna is a way around this.

Get out away from the city and all the RF garbage. In an RF clean zone the range will be much increased.
