Hog Hunting with OUTDOOR LED LIGHTS? Answered

I am wanting to hook up some solar powered red led lights at My deer lease to hunt hogs with. The light will have to be bright enough for Me to be able to see the hogs with My scope from about 100 yeards away. I know nothing about how to hook this up, what I need to buy, but I am handy to some degree. Any help would be great

It wouldn't be hard to build. You'd need some LEDs, and some cheap solar lights. Solar lights run white leds at 3-4 volts. RED leds require less, 2-3 volts. You would want to replace each 1 white led with 2 red leds in series. Leave everything else intact.

Thank you for the information. I was thinking of buying solar garden lights. Could I replace the white LED`s with red one. If I can do this how do I hook them up. I am not very electrically inclined, but if you can tell Me how do this I think that I could get it done. I was also thinking of putting some type of reflector in the clear plastic housing to direct the light to where I need it with may some aluminum foil. Thanks for your input and anything that you could help Me with as far as how to hook this up would be great. Thanks, Steve

You can use almost any 12V system .. the problem is - HOW LONG THEY WILL RUN .. and how bright .. the bigger the power source and one with rechargeable capability ( ie SOLAR PANEL ) .. and dusk to dawn switching OR remote control .. will work best - save yourself a lot of time and heartache - go to www.huntsports.com and get my HogLight Deer FeederLight Plans for $ 19.99

Just remember that leds are polarized, meaning they have a distinct + and -. https://www.instructables.com/id/LED_Polarity_Tester/ has useful information for figuring this out.

Start by using a multimeter (they're inexpensive for the hobby ones) to check the voltage at the led when the unit is on. If you start with solar lights with AMBER bulbs in them, the voltage may be compatible with the red leds out of the chute, no major changes necessary. White DOES require higher voltage, and that higher voltage will damage your red diodes.

Taking out the old led will be easy as well...heating up the solder joints, and pulling gently. There will be a resistor in series, likely on the circuit board (follow the traces, you'll see it). Its value will be important in regulating the original led. Hook up 1 or 2 leds to the spot (in series, + to -, + to -) where the old led was. Both should shine when power is applied.

Why are they different voltages? The chemistry that makes up the diode itself is different in different colours, and each requires a different amount of power.

ooh ooh, worst case scenario - put a red filter over the white led. it's a bit wasteful, but really, a white led is a 'multicolour' led, you'd just filter out the non-white.

I've done lot's and lots of testing of lights , LEDS and brightness testing and those garden solar lights are a waste of time and money

I beleive Texas Boars and Hog Hunting Guide both have Forums that give you FREE detailed information on building LED Hog Lights.Just do a GOOGLE or YAHOO search for Hog Lights and you should be able to find the information you are looking for. Then you can go to E-bay and Order your LED's.

Here in Texas there are no laws about hunting hogs with light at night. There are just to many. There is also no season for hunting them and it can be done year round, but thanks for the comment. Steve

Be careful, some states ban hunting with artificial lights (minnesota for example)
