How can I fix a broken noise canceling headphone cable? (It has four cables, not three)?
I accidentally broke by Sony MDR-NC7 headphone's cable, and when I tried to repair it I discovered that it had four cables instead of the usual three. Does it have anything to do with the fact that they're noise-canceling headphones? Two of the cables are golden, one blue and the last one red.

After 8 years (!!!) and in case someone stumbles upon this, there's actually:
- Ground
- Left
- Right
- what I assume is 1,5v (from the battery on the left ear)
- what I assume is a return cable for the switch on the right side (to complete the electrical circuit)
The tip is actually stereo (Ground + left + right), and it goes to the junction as that. It splits on the junction for both sides, along with the extra 2 that will travel from one side to the other.
If you open the earphones you'll actually see 5 places where you'll solder all of these. I tested with external jumpers and as long as you're connecting at least the ground, left and right correctly, you should hear audio.

They do have a microphone in there IF they are battery powered. That's how they work by inverting the outside noise and adding it to the ambient there is a reasonable level of cancellation for regular noise like jet engines.
Assuming you haven't removed the cable totally you should be able to trace where it connected to.
If you have removed it did you look and see what was connected to what?
Is you problem getting 4 core cable? Try cat 5 as a substitute or gut a cheap USB cable.

Ture. I have not removed it completely, but curiously when I try to connect them again they won't work, with only one side of the headphones working correctly.
I could get 4 core cable, but how would I solder it to the plug? Thanks for responding!

You can buy a new stereo p[lug for very little and solder the wires to that - Normally they have a plug with a welded cover so you have to cut it to remove it - But that will allow you to see which wire is connected to which pin.
I think changing the cable is the best option.

Ok, thanks

Usually the 4th wire is a mic line (or there are 2 different grounds, one for right and one for left)
How many rings does the plug have?
Answer 9 years ago
It only has three rings (it's a normal stereo plug) and has no microphone. If it has two different grounds, which part of the plug should I solder them to? Thanks for taking your time to respond to this!
