How can I make a remote control for my stereo? Answered

I have a stereo and I want to make a remote to switch between the 6 preset channels on the radio.  I'm thinking infrared because I'll be very close to it and it's simpler than RF.  I have no problem with opening it up or soldering.  I need to know how to make it switch 6 different things, though, with just one emitter/detector pair.
