How can I wire my boombox? Answered

I need help wiring a car head unit for a boombox I am making. The problem that I'm having is that to save my settings, the head unit needs a constant 12v supply. Currently, I have a computer power supply going to the head unit supplying the 12v along with 5v for a PC fan I am using to help with cooling. The problem is that I am planning on putting in a motorcycle battery and switching between the power supply (wall power) and the battery (portable). I need all components to run off of either power source and to be able to switch between them without overloading the system or losing the constant 12v. Please help and sorry if that didn't make sense or was too complicated.

Car radio/mp3 players usually has a separate power cable that draws only a few mA to keep your settings.

If that's the case it would just be a matter to have it connected to your battery all the time and turning it off would no longer be an issue. :)

Mine doesn't unfortunately. The constant supply comes in the same cable as the main power. I decided to just run everything off a motorcycle battery and wire in a charger and 12v to 5v step down for the fan. Thanks for your help anyway!

There's always the possibility to use a capacitor bank for when you switch form the battery to the power supply. Since the switching is quite fast using an SPDT switch, 10,000uF or maybe even less should work.
